THIS IS GOING TO BE AN AWESOME WEEKEND!!!

We will have a cocktail gathering at the Fantasy Springs Hotel on Friday evening.  The 12th Floor Lounge sits high atop the hotel with great views of the valley.   We will meet up with our Arizona guests and plan our strategies for setting the low time at the Auto-X.    Fantasy Springs Resort 84-245 Indio Springs Pkwy, Indio  CA   92203

ALL VIPERS will meet in the west hotel parking lot at 8:00 am on Saturday morning.  We will put #'s on the cars and take care of all the registration paperwork BEFORE heading to the Fairgrounds.  This will eliminate having to wait in the line with everyone else at the Fairgrounds to register.  We will leave the Hotel promptly at 8:30am
We have made special arrangements with the organizers to restrict the first couple of hours to Vipers and Corvettes  ONLY.  This event is open to the public....but we will get our own time block to run in so we won't have long wait times.  The course will go hot at 9:00 am sharp and we have 2 hours to get our runs in.  It will be a tight battle between the Vipers and Vettes. A special trophy will be presented to Team Viper or Team Corvette based on a cumulative time from the lowest 5 times of each team.

We will leave the Fairgrounds around 12:00 and head for lunch at Las Casuelas.  Cost will be $16.00 each for a 3 item buffet and soft drinks included.
After lunch, we will take a nice little cruise up Hwy 74 to the lookout and then drop back into the valley and stop off at Shields Date Garden for date shakes.

Later that evening, the Vipers and Corvettes will meet for a big group dinner close to the Fantasy Springs Hotel at Ciro's Italian Ristorante  81-957 Hwy 111  indio

Sunday morning we will check out of the hotel and head to the Palm Springs Tram at 10:00 am.  We will have lunch at the top of the hill and enjoy the magnificent views.

JUST HEARD FROM THE PALM SPRINGS CORVETTE CLUB:
They have an exciting Traveling Trophy that someone will win at this event...  sharpen up your cone skills, Viper-boys, 'cuz they claim it's not travelin' far!

HELMETS ARE REQUIRED FOR THE AUTOX
Please bring yours, or borrow one if possible.  The Corvette Club has a few loaners available.

Hey Guys,

If we can arrange it, it might be better to get our dedicated "track time" when the pavement is warmer, i.e. later in the day, so that grip will be better.

I'll mount some A6's on the ACR for this one.

I agree, but it is an open event....and politely asking them to make special provisions for us Viper guys was probably already pushing my luck.   My main concern was making sure that we all got our runs in without having the long wait time in between runs.

The Corvette guys will have an advantage since they are setting up the course.  We'll have to be very quick ! <2

The Stig better make his flight reservations now !

Thank you Anthony for setting this up!!

this is always a great event. i've been running this course for many years.  the corvette club does a great job.  as history seems to have it, we always  have a warm weekend for this event.  i don't think we have to worry to much about a cold track.  these guys are good and fast, so we have to step up and show them how viper owners auto-X.    Anthony

I'm in... Banzai, bring the Lotus, it will smoke the vettes no problem! Or bring the ACR, I've got an extra set of Hoosiers to throw down and break records!

Odie, if you bring the pooch, I'll bring the bones!

Stig,

Glad you can make it.

Bring those A6's and we'll see what we can do to the Vette guys.

Ben,

That little Lotus should be very quick around a tight Auto X course.

What are you having done to your Viper?

Hey Dan,

The Lotus is at Brian's shop not the Viper. Just having some safety mods done to it, modifying part of the cage and harness mounts, fitting a roof on it, rear toe link braces, and some other things.

I should take the Viper to the autox since it's a Viper vs. Vette thing.

It's time to start getting these room reservations made!  They're going to go fast, and we don't have a large block of rooms available.  Be sure to tell them you are with the SoCal Viper Club for the discounted rate of $149/night.  Anthony and Lance deserve lots of THANKS for setting up this event!  This whole weekend is really going to be fun and well planned by them.

OK, Viper Guys, you have just been presented with a challenge from the Palm Springs Corvette Club!
Shawn Hyman (Autocross Chairman for the Corvette Club) just emailed me to say, and I quote:  "Wait until you see the traveling trophy we have made.  By the way... I made it a traveling trophy because I don't expect it to travel far!!!"
>4
Also, they are now doing a combined charity function with ALS and the Boys & Girls Club of Cathedral City, with the proceeds from both of the events being split 50/50 with them.
Now, we don't want that trophy to stay in the Palm Springs Corvette possession, do we???  ^8

Can we come out early and help them set up?  (Just kidding)

......and, I've got a big bet with Anthony and Lance, a diet coke to the one with the best time.  Anybody else interested?

Another news-flash:  The Corvette Club will have a few extra helmets that can be loaned out, but HELMETS ARE REQUIRED, so please bring your own if you have one.  I have about a half dozen of those helmet liner things you can have to wear if you have to borrow a helmet and will have them on hand at the Drags and at the AutoX.

I took an early morning cruise out to PS this morning.  Anthony and I had breakfast with the Corvette Club Admins.

We will all run in the Sport class.
Cars must be street legal.
No restrictions on tires.

The first 2 hours will be Vipers and Vettes only.  They will probably take the cumulative best 5 from each side to see who's Club is the winner.

They are already talking smack !  And quite confident that we don't have a chance.   >4

In addition to this, there is the Overall best time for the entire day.  So if you lay down a blistering time to help our Club, your time will also be out there for the general public to also try and beat.

We went over a lot of details and we got to take a brief look at the lot.  Looks like it will be a really fun day.

Hi Jay,
This is a 2 day Auto-x put on by the P.S. Corvette club and is an annual event.  It is open to the public and you will see all kinds of cars out there running.   We are ONLY running on Sat morning.

When I contacted the Corvette Club and proposed our plan, they were GREAT and very accommodating.
We secured the first 2 hours from 9:00 to 11:00 as a Private session for just the Vipers and Corvettes.
We will alternate Vipers and Corvettes on each run.

This is a Charity event and all proceeds go to the ALS and the Boys & Girls Club.
I'm still working the details for the exact cost BUT it looks like the cost will work out to be $40 - 45 for each car.
In essence it will be unlimited runs for 2 hours.....but based on the # of vipers and vettes, we are estimating that each car should get  about 3 - 4 runs each.   Maybe more if we don't lose time to people killing cones and my guess is that not everyone will be continually running for 2 hours straight.

I am also hoping that some of our Viper guys will volunteer and help the Vette guys "work" the course.  Maybe stand watch for a short while and pick up cones if needed, to allow the Vette Volunteers a chance to get in their cars and make some passes on the course.  Normally these guys DON"T get to even go out on the course as they are there solely to work the event.

I cannot say enough about how nice and gracious they were to our proposal.  I'm really looking forward to working hand in hand with them on this and having a lot of fun in the process.

Once again.....If you haven't made a room reservation DO NOT WAIT.  Our hands will be tied once the 29th rolls around and getting a room out there will be expensive and very hard to find.

This will be my first time taking my baby and driving it hard,   <2  =15   So im sure ill be knocking some cones over but illl do my best not to. I'm defiantly willing to help out and work also while my car takes a break between runs.

so sign me and my dad up for helping out.

Hey Lance,

We could offer to work the course, i.e. pick up cones for the first hour and let the Vette guys drive, then swap with them so that we could drive the second hour while they pick up cones?

Could be quite a dance if we are continually swapping out course workers.....just a thought.

You should come out, drive and have fun.  This is a good starting point for a "newbie'.  Just take it easy at first and get a feel for the car, then pick up the pace as you become more comfortable.

You'll be glad you did.

We thought about that, but everyone agreed that it would be much more fun for everyone, as well as the public spectators, to see the Vipers and Vettes going "head to head"

The Boys and Girls Club will also have a bunch of young legs out there to help chase cones.  We just want to make sure that the Corvette Club members that are out there working the course get a chance to jump in their SLOW cars and have some fun too   <L

Hey Derek,
I will be updating the first post in the next day or so with all the details and times.

The address for the Fantasy Springs Resort is 84-245 Indio Springs Pkwy,  Indio  CA  92203
We will be meeting in the west parking lot at 8:00 am and will be leaving PROMPTLY at 8:30 am

We need all the Vipers to meet us at the Resort so that we can complete all the registration, waivers and get numbers on the cars BEFORE we head over to the Fairgrounds.

The course will open up at 9:00 am sharp and our block of time will end at 11:00.  If you don't show up at the Resort first to get registered, you will have to wait in the line at the Fairgrounds to get registered and lose valuable run time.

For those of you who are either new to owning a Viper or have not had an opportunity to drive an AutoX, please sign up and enjoy the day there!  The AutoX is something you can just compete with your own times.  It is an invaluable opportunity to push your Viper to your own limits and learn more about handling it in an environment that is safe.  You don't have to have any previous experience with the race track or drags.  The biggest challenge for many drivers is simply keeping the pattern of the cones in your mind and not going out of bounds.  (you're going to see plenty of that)  Driving an AutoX is one of the most exciting and enjoyable events our club participates in.  The course is short and twisty so you won't be doing a high speed.
=15
If you need to borrow a helmet (they are required) let me know as we have a man's medium size and a small available.  They will have some helmets at the course you can borrow, but will have to be shared and taken off & put on with each run due to limited amount available.   Pam

Tip for those of you that need to borrow helmets, you should go buy a "head sock".  Sube Sports in Huntington Beach, CA sells them and helmets too or you can buy them on line at Safe Racer among other racing suppliers.

One size "head sock" fits all.

That way, you won't get any "kooties" from the previous helmet wearer.

So I would have to drive to Aurantiaco Comitatu (Orange County) and be exposed to Aurantiaco Scabiem (Orange Itch) just to buy a helmet and suit?  Long way from LA

Is there a way we can pick which number we would like to be?
I Personally would like #7 or #22

but not sure how that all will work. but those are my preferred #'s

Looking forward to it, I just made reservations for Saturday night.  Jennifer and I will be there for all the Saturday stuff.  We'll have to miss the Friday night hangout.

Now I just need to see if I can fit in the car while wearing a helmet...  Should I assume that if a helmet is required that the convertible top must be up?

We have several "head sock" things that we picked up for a buck a piece at a medical supply store.... those blue hair net things you see doctors wearing in surgery.  I can send them with Lisa & Dave (we won't be at the AutoX) if you want.  That's what the Corvette Club used a couple years ago when we were there and borrowed their helmets.  Once again, we have 2 helmets someone can borrow.  Only been used about 3 times now.  Anyone looking to buy one at a LOW price, let us know.  Paul & Pam Winters

I wll be in Palm Springs for spring break with the family.  Will probably bring out the snake, but most likely not run the autocross.  What do I need to do?  Anyone staying over Saturday night?

Hey EJ,
If you are not running the Auto-x, no need to do anything other than show up (ideally at the Fantasy Springs Resort at 8:00, otherwise you can meet us at the fairgrounds....but you will have to wait in the line and sign in with them there along with all the other cars)

We will head to lunch around 12:00.

There are about 17 of us spending the night at Fantasy Springs, but I'm not sure how many are going to the tram for lunch.  I guess it will depend on the weather.

Anthony says it NEVER rains out there.

Hey Guys,

I found two Las Casuelas restaurants, one in Palm Springs, the other in Rancho Mirage.  Which one are we having lunch at?

Also, do we have a dinner spot yet?  The first post says dinner will be close to the hotel.

Las Casuelas is only 4 miles from the Farigrounds on the corner of  Hwy 111 and Washington.

Sat. night dinner is at Ciro's Italian Ristorante which is 3 miles from the Hotel.

Anthony is printing up driving instructions for us which we will hand out on Sat. morning as well.

i really want to make this event. i already canceled my other plans i had going this weekend so i could attend this. but if its driving in rain for auto x, and then 3 hrs drive home in more rain does not sounds like fun to me. So ill keep checking everything and ill keep you guys posted.

Normally, it doesn't rain much in Indio.

Saturday shows basically no rain with two one hundredths of an inch on Saturday night and Sunday shows a 20% chance of rain with one tenth of an inch of rain for the day.

Not sure where you guys are coming from, but it looks like a much greater chance of rain nearer the coast.

We're planning to drive out Friday early afternoon, play on Saturday, then come home after a late breakfast on Sunday morning.

I have been here since yesterday and it is clear skies and 85 degrees.  Not a hint of any change in the weather patterns up to today.  Weather predictions in So Cal are highly over-rated!  However, there may be a storm in LA on Saturday.

While there is a chance of rain, I have been talking with the organizers and they are confident that the weather will be just fine for Saturday.

Many of us are driving out on Friday with only a small chance of catching any rain. Those who are driving out on Saturday morning will have to leave pretty early in the morning in order to get to Fantasy Springs on time, so hopefully you'll beat whatever rain there might be west of the mountains.

Pack some micro fiber towels and detailer and all will be good.

I hear that there are 15 Corvettes coming from OC on Sat morning to get a piece of the action.  I'm sure they'll be laughing at us if we didn't show because of a little rain.   >1

Well got home a few hrs ago from the Auto X event. I had a lot of fun. Was able to take my Viper out in a close course and get a better feel for the car. I now feel even more comfortable driving it now knowing the car just that much better. My best time was a 44.1 not bad IMO for my first time doing an auto x event.

Drove home most of the way in the rain and at times it was beyond pouring rain. The drive home was not enjoyable at all.  =17
But the Awesome time i had with everyone this weekend made up for it!  <1

This was my 2nd so-cal Viper event ive been to since i purchased my first Viper about 6 months ago.
I met a lot of new people and I really enjoyed talking with everyone and getting to know you all.

BIG Thanks to everyone who help put this together I will be there again next year ready to do some more battle with the Vette's!

Here are some pics and a video of one of my runs i did today.
Enjoy!

What a great weekend out in the Palm Desert !   I know it was a really tough decision for many to cancel out due to the rains , but for those that drove out on Friday and left on Sunday, the weather really wasn't much of a factor.   Despite Mother Nature, we still had 20 hungry Snakes out at the Corvette Charity Auto-x.

You could see the dark ominous clouds all around us up on the mountain tops, but the winds were very calm and the temperatures were perfect.

I cannot Thank the Palm Springs Corvette Club for their gracious hospitality !  What a Class Act and great bunch of people.

I also want to Thank Anthony for putting in countless hours of work setting up everything from Hotel to maps for all of us and making sure that every detail was taken care of.   >t

It was a great battle and very few cones were killed.

It was really fun to listen to the times being announced with each pass and hearing which team had the lowest time.  It went back and forth which made it exciting and with seconds left on the clock, the final passes were being made.....Ben lays down the fastest overall time on his last pass !

A BIG thank you to Lance, Anthony, and the Palm Springs Corvette Club for putting on such a great event and arranging the Vette-Viper only run group. It was really nice to get all our runs in the two hour session so we didn't have to wait around all day.
Thanks to Dan, Drew, Juan, and Anthony for their great driving to help us win the team competition.
And, thanks Mr. and Mrs. Hirk and Lance for the great pics.
It was really nice seeing everyone else too, fantastic weekend!  >v

My hat is off to you Ben.

You really earned your nickname "Banzai Ben" as that's how your last run looked from where I sat.  You really hauled buns.

Excellent job.

Now, for the huge side bet on next years Auto X, I propose the usual Diet Coke for the fastest time, purchased by the #2 spot (first loser per NASCAR).

I think we'd both better watch out for Drew next time; but maybe I'll do some extra "prep" work on Cathy's Viper just for Drew before the next AutoX ...... like changing from PS2's to some old, crummy run flats or maybe pulling a couple of spark plug wires.....Oh yeah, it's a team event - maybe not.  >w

It was a great Team Event and the top five really showed their skills.

Ben  41.197      Dan  42.373     Drew  42.705    Juan  43.466     Anthony  43.608
Even more impressive was the fact that Ben, Drew and Anthony were on street tires.

FYI, Ben was on Kumho Ecsta V700's with a tread wear rating of "50" (same as Hoosiers), these are about the stickiest street tires you can buy, if you can find them.

Drew and Anthony were on real street tires, i.e. Michelins, while Juan and I were on Hoosiers.

If we hope to have a shot at a repeat, we should all pick up a set of Kumho's or equivalent sticky tires (Hoosier A 6s?) for our next contest with the Vette guys as it's likely that they will come "loaded for bear" next time.

I though I post this video Laura recorded. Ben had gone before me and you will
notice him at the top of the screen as I'm taking off. Listen to the announcer for what was the fastest run of the day as we take the lead. I'm not sure who is laughing in the background but it sure is funny.
