Title: VIPER DAYS at WILLOW SPRINGS - September 13 & 14
Post by: admin on April 03, 2008, 12:54:36 PM
Hey Gang,

Viper Days, aka the Performance Driving School is returning to CA - This time they'll be at Willow Springs (near Lancaster)

We'll have the LeGrand garage for our group with drinks and snacks.  Bring your favorite goody if you can, if not, just come and enjoy.

~ There's a reception on Friday night.

~ Time trials / driving instruction and races where you can watch the comp coupes run (for the race group) will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

~ There's a neat dinner on Saturday night with the entire group.

Put this one on your calendar, you won't want to miss it - even if you're just coming to watch!

Here's the info you need to register for the event:

This link is to the Viper Days website where the details of this event will be posted as we near the event:
http://www.viperdays.com/page.htm?id=109

This link will take you to the New Driver's Registration:
http://www.viperdays.com/driver_application.htm

This link will take you to Willow Springs Raceway where you can see the track configuration
http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/trackinformation/maps.asp

It's a good idea to become familiar with the track ahead of the event - I found that remembering all the turns (which is critical by the way) is difficult when you have so many other things to think about.

For more information go to:  www.viperdays.com

See you there.

For anyone with a Viper, this is a MUST DO.
Skip is a great teacher and advocate of Viper safety and the skills you will be taught on car control is extremely valuable for everyday situations.

Let's get a bunch of SoCal Members out there and have some fun !

Great idea Lance.  We can even invite the old guy O  (if he can stay awake!)

Hey Art, get some tires for this one will you!

We already have one of the 4 garages, so we'll be styling.....

Maybe we can get Fast Eddie to come?

How about Joel?

Step and Glen?

Mike Bucnkinham?

Ray McIntyre and Mike Burgoyne are also planning to attend.

I'll bet Manny Coats will be there too.

I'll be there too.....

Hey Mike,

NASA is running Willow Springs on May 24 and 25.  They are a good group, just very structured.

I'll likely attend that one.  <2

Hey Lance,

Yeah, I've heard about Andy's cup car.  Kinda' anxious to see it.

Just put new brake pads and Stoptech (ACR) Aero rotors on the GTS.  Took 30 lbs off of the car - all rotational mass.

Should stop better and go better too!

Dan,

thanks for the info, I ran a bunch of NASA events in Phoenix.  I've got a company golf event on Saturday, are you and Cathy planning on staying for Sunday?

Got my car back from Dan last week, all is OK with KW's, Dan said they were set way too low.  He also got the throttle body working correctly and fixed a bad wheel bearing that I didn't know about (warrantee).

Let me know about May 25th.

Hey Mike,

If we go, which is likely, we'll stay both days.  Sunday is usually less crowded, so that's a plus.

Hey Art,

If you want the ultimate in a set of reasonably priced, quality track wheels / tires, call JonB, tell him I referred you and ask for the black SSR (18-inch, six spoke) wheels with Kumho Ecsta V-700's mounted.  305 x 18 front, 335 x 18 rears, full tread - heat cycled.

These tires are street legal DOT approved in "R" (race) compound.  The SSR wheels are about 40 lbs lighter than your stock wheels (or bling-bling HRE wheels).  You will feel an improvement in accelertion, braking and handling.  You will have to buy an E-brake relocation kit - call Dave C  O - and have it installed.  It's an easy install and if you ask Lance very nicely, he may let you borrow his lift.  If you can work this out with Lance, let me know and I'll drop by and supervise (I've done two of these now).

This way, you can mount this tire / wheel set up at home, drive the track for a couple of days on very sticky tires (makes it much harder to spin) and then drive home.

You'll also have a much better chance of keeping up with "Fast Eddie".

Hope you can make this one.

YES ART......You can come to my place and use the lift any time at all.    Viper buddies are always >6

We'll need all the help we can get to keep up with FAST EDDIE !!!!!

Hey Dan,
A heat cycled tire?? instead of a brand new one ?

I was planning on putting the Kuhmos on before Viper days as well.....but was going to just order (I assumed) new tires from JonB.

Lance
Title: Re: VIPER DAYS at WILLOW SPRINGS - September 13 & 14
Post by: ViperX on April 18, 2008, 02:47:39 PM
Lance,

You will love the way the Kumhos work on your GTS.  They are streetable, very sticky and still predictable at the track.  Rev (Mike Burgoyne) ran several 1:35's at Willow with treaded Kumhos, which is very fast on street tires for a rookie driver (He's an exceptional rookie driver that I've been working with).

Yes on the heat cycling.  These are brand new tires that have been heat cycled by Tire Rack.  Heat cycling helps the tires last longer, especially at the track.  You probably won't want to run them all the time on the street as they are sticky and will pick up small rocks, sand, etc. and blast your side sills.  I run them all the time on the back of my black SRT-10 for traction and don't worry about it.

JonB can put this together for you.

Dan

Hey Kobi,

Archer Racing will be at the track during Viper Days to support us if we should not have time to get any services done before we get there.

I will be going up Thursday and running the test and tune session on Friday.  We have a garage rented for our group.  I'd recommend that you come up early Friday if you want to have Archer do any work on your car as they will be busy.

If you are interested, they can provide alignment and corner weighting for your car, which I'd recommend you do if you have not already had it done.

Contact John Archer for more info or an appointment at: 218-727-4806

Tell him I sent you.

Call the track before you go to see if you can run on Friday.  I've been told you have to be full race prep, cage, firesuit, belts, fire suppression, etc....

I told courtney but she hasn't responded other than to say she's checking.

I am not going to run on Friday.  Just going up for tech and tweaks if needs be.  Get a personal look at the track, watch some guys run, and then pee in my pants.  I'll be sure to change trousers before Friday night's dinner.

Have never run at Williow before.  So I am in the beginners group on Sat. and Sun.  I am just coming up on Friday to get an early start on all the registration, tech inspections, and any last minute tweaks to the car as a lot of vendors will be there I hear.

I have mainly been a drag racer, but recently have become more interested in road racing.  I am also signed up with Speed Ventures for the Roval at Auto Club Speedway the following weekend.  Two track weekends in a row!  >g  >r

we can either head up the 405 or 5 fwy.

Anyone else leaving on Friday?

Hey Guys,

Looks like my youngest son Drew is coming up.

He'll be sharing time driving with Cathy in the green group but driving my GTS.

I'll be instructing him and making him go slow ..... at the beginning anyway.

Since I don't want to run my GTS in back to back sessions, I'll have to run in a group that lets my car cool for at least 30 minutes between runs, likely the Blue group.

Looking forward to seeing you guys.

Dan

So that means I need to hit the road by 9am and I'll probably miss rolling up with you guys.  I'll already be at the track when you guys start to head out.

See you at the track!  It'll be good to finally meet you Mike.

Hey Guys and Gals,

For all of you going to Viper Days who haven't done your track preparation yet (and won't likely get it done in time) things like fluid changes, tires, wheels or other maintenance, Archer Racing will be at the track on Thursday afternoon and can do this for you.

Archer can also do corner weighting and alignments, from street, to aggressive street to full track alignment.  I'm having them bump steer, corner weight and align my SRTC.

Contact John Archer at 218-727-4806 for more information or a service reservation.

I have been looking at the track map, but also found this video which I thought was helpful to visualize.  I am sure there are plenty, but this one we really clear.  This guy takes one lap around CW starting at 1 and goes on to 2, 3, etc.  Watching the video while following along with the track map I thought was helpful.

30 secs into the video is when the run actually starts (after all the intro crap)

Art,

I get what's called an aggressive street alignment for my SRTC from Archer.

This is a good alignment for a street car that sees some twisties (like Malibu or SD Canyon runs) or an occasional track day.  Turn in and handling are good for both the street and the track.  Tire wear is good.

My GTS gets a full track alignment, lots of camber, toe in rear and toe out front.  Turn in and handling are very good on the track, a bit of a handful on the street.  Tire wear on the street is excessive but very good on the track.

OGO,

Yes, it seems that the sun is shining on us again weather wise (or not shining).

Highs are low and lows are in the sixties.  Late morning runs should be great.

Dan

My .02 on the video is turn #1 fine, sweeper #2 stay more center track, you'll  carry more speed and decrease you radius towards the apex, turn #3 turn in later and take a straighter line up the hill (full gas), #4 was blocked by a car, #5, #6 & #7 fine, #8 stay 1 car width off the inside line carry more speed and take out the "washboard", #9 was blocked by a car off track but remember late apex the turn......stay out.

Speed Ticket Brekr, a good compromise is +6 caster, neutral to -20 total toe, Camber -1.9 front and -1.3 rear, this is a great track/street compromise. Remember it will be "darty" on the street at first but you will get used to it fast. The biggest problem in the Viper is the "push" around turns hence the -1.9 front camber.

I spoke to Jonathan and am awaiting a reply, you got the same Oct. 10th track date as me at Buttonwillow. If he shows he will run in Red Race group. You wanna see someone fast.....Terry Rossi will be there in David's '08 coupe and running in the same white run group, I will fight to keep up with him. But he will be faster then me  <D
Title: Re: VIPER DAYS at WILLOW SPRINGS - September 13 & 14
Post by: ViperX on September 08, 2008, 08:26:59 PM
Ron,

I know Terry pretty well and have had him instruct me several times; he is very smooth and very fast.

Though I doubt you'll have much trouble keeping up with Terry (on street tires) if you're in the ACR on Cups - I've seen both of you drive.

Glad you're coming, should be fun to watch the two of you.

Dan

On the video, I mostly agree with Ron's comments.  This guy is driving a 4 wheel drive, lightweight race car, so our Viper lines will be a bit different.  I prefer to double apex turn 2.  This guy seems to go in late, kinda hug the inside part of the corner, making that last turn onto the short straight a bit tight.  I think he loses speed in this turn too and heats up his tires.

If you go into turn 3 in a Viper where this guy in the 4 wheel drive car does and carry some speed, you'll go off if you get on the gas too hard.

There is a pretty good section of "wash board" in 8.  Opinions vary on this high speed turn.  I normally go through it as close to the dirt as possible (this is what Terry Rossi teaches) - I think it helps straighten out that section of the turn.  It does take some cajones to go 125-130 mph while turning on a washboard section of track.  I've tried (and will try again) going one car off the inside of the turn but don't feel as comfortable there.  Feels kinda like I'm turning longer.  My .02 cents.

Definitely stay out on 9 and turn in late.  9 is a very difficult turn to feel good about.

Dan, if you don't run White group because of heat soaking ride with me a session, I'll show you a line through 8/9 you never saw before (I think). It's fast and is a "race line" that requires great timing, but if ya hit it, it's a money line  ^2

Hey Everybody!
Just found out I can make it to the Viper Days event this weekend! But, before I book a reservation at the hotel I wanted to see if anyone would like to split a room out there. If you would be interested please call me at 858-735-8048.

Come on Ron, I wasn't speeding, the CHP was going too slow  >k  That's why he had to wait to flash the lights until I got to the stop sign.

Hey Ron,

I'd like that.

I just can't fit in any Viper with a helmet on unless the seat is lowered the full 2 inches.

I have race seats in my GTS.  Maybe you can ride with me once and show me your line.

In a 2008 ACR that wouldn't and shouldn't be hard to beat my almost stock 2000 GTS.  150+ HP and 150# of downforce.  That car ought to be running sub :24s.  Make it happen.  Get an :23 or better >3

Hey Carl,

I'll be Ron would let you run a session if you came out.

I'd like to see someone run 23's or 24's in a new ACR.

I just ordered a 2009 ACR, should be here in Jan / Feb 09.

I'd like to know the potential of the car so that I can have a goal - not that I'd ever reach it!

I really wanna break 1:30 so I'll settle for a 1:29.99.

I think the ACR on Cups is capable of a :24 or better.  I do not believe I could do it.  I think with a little time in an ACR I could be sub :30.  Keep in mind Ron will be driving Rocman's car.   I don't think he nor I would drive it to the same potential as if it were ours.  That being said, the temps will be somewhat better than the last time he was there however, the cups on that car are getting old.  They have the long commute from Woodhouse, and two or three track days....they are past their peak.  Even then I fully expect Ron to be sub :30...You all have fun, wish I was there.

Hey Carl,

This was generally a good weekend but the weather didn't cooperate - it got hotter than forecasted.  It was 100 F at the track on my trucks "outside" thermometer when I pulled out for home on Sunday at 5:50 PM - and Sunday was cooler than Saturday.

All in all, most of our guys seemed to have a good time.  The track was pretty open, so we all got a bunch of track time.  I picked up a new lap timer from Dave C and it worked great.  I didn't care much for the numbers it showed, but at least I could read them.  My best laps were 1:35, many 36s & 37s.  I did run these with passengers, so maybe I could have dropped another second or two.

I think my youngest son Drew was the highlight for me.  This was his first time out.  In only his fourth session he ran 1:43's in my GTS.

Mike Burgoyne aka REV also ran some 31's in his SRT-10 vert on Toyos, so he was haulin'.

Ron corded his left front tire and returned with two new fronts + old rears.  Not the best combination for the track.

Wish you could have made this.

See you soon,

Dan

PS  Would you be willing to instruct at our upcoming car control clinic at Fontana / Cal Speedway?

I've not driven cal speedway except the entire oval.  I'd be a little worried about being a decent instructor for any event there....Willow, I'd do in a heart beat.  Thanks for the vote of confidence but I'm not sure I'd be the best choice not knowing that tracks nuances.

I'm talking about you instructing at our upcoming car control clinic - held in the parking lot.

Bob Blizzard will be our chief instructor.  Check the post for more info.

When it's all done, you and I and a few others can stay and play, then clean up.

PS  I tend to agree with Jonathan - maybe a few more seconds on a really good day - nothing more on cups.  Maybe another tick or two with Hoosiers.

They have added an open category at the bottom, so everyone's times are there, even if you weren't running Michelins.

Hey Carl,
  My best laps were 1:35, many 36s & 37s.

Dan, the best your Viper Days time sheets showed was 1:36.9. You may want to have that in car timer checked. Mine was within a few hundedths of Viper Days time.

David,

I ran test and tune on Friday and ran a bunch of 1:35's in 105 F.  I've run many 1:34's before at Willow in my GTS.

Unfortunately, my son took my GTS off track coming out of turn nine on Saturday morning and bent my right front wheel.  This made running fast times a bit challenging for the balance of the weekend, though I still managed a bunch of 1:36's.

We have the same timer, so I'd guess that it's about the same accuracy.

The good news is that only the outer rim was bent but it was enough to cord the right front tire prematurely.

A group of us will be running at Buttonwillow this weekend with NASA and again at Willow Springs with the Pantera Club the first weekend of November.  We may also visit Spring Mountain in mid November.  Any interest?

Glad to see that Terry Rossi is helping you with your driving, you've made good progress.

See you at the track,

Dan  <2

PS  Rev (my normal driving buddy) will likely be at these events too (red Viper / wing & splitter).  He enjoyed driving with you at Viper Days.

Dan, they had you at a best of 1:36.945. If the timer was giving you a bunch of 1:36s that still would seem off. It would be hard to cluster laps within that 6/100 window. Load the software that came with it, pull the memory stick and take a look.

David,

I did.  That's how I knew my times.

Keep in mind that my son drove my car, my wife drove my car and so did I.  Each of us had our own transponders.

I'm sure that we didn't always switch transponders as we should have, so some of each of our times were not recorded as far as Viper Days was concerned.

Dan

PS Did Terry drive your car for time?  If so, how did he do?

Title: Re: VIPER DAYS at WILLOW SPRINGS - September 13 & 14
Post by: Sundiego on October 14, 2008, 07:36:59 PM
If you had the wrong transponder in they would have got credit for the time, and didn't. If the transponder isn't working they black flag you. Check your in car timer card on your computer. It doesn't agree with theirs, and the other timers do agree.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=K9Daf-qGcVY

Here's Terry in my car. He only did a 1:30 because he hit traffic on 9. When he took the ACR out he only got a 1:29 as the rear tires were heat cycled out. The ACR was 6 second slower on Sun than Sat when Ron drove it both days .Terry drove it on Sun.

David,

First, I was not running the Michelin Challenge Series, don't care to do that.  There may have been laps where there was no transponder in my car.  I really wasn't paying that much attention... and don't care about specific lap times during an event that I'm hosting . ... and no, I didn't get black flagged nor did Cathy or my son.  Never have been black flagged for not having a transponder and have run without one many times at VD events.

I have checked my data logger and it is as I said above.

I'll be at Willow Springs again with the Pantera Group on Nov 1 and 2.  Come on out and we'll run some laps.

Dan
