Title: Trailer questions
Post by: Speedtactics on November 06, 2012, 02:18:15 PM
Okay I'm planing on looking for a trailer in the near future. Those drives to Laguna Seca and Spring mountain are rough in the car with the sticky tires and ACR suspension .
I would like to know what kind of things I need to look for.
I know to start I would like to get an open trailer similar to what Ben uses for his GTS race car.
looking for things like brand, options, size etc.
Thanks for the help, I think this could be a good topic for others later that want to do the same.

Featherlites are great to tow, but can be a challenge  having to deal with the ramps and loading Vipers with splitters.
Demoe and Jim in AZ use a tilt back which is REALLY nice and Viper friendly.  Only downside is the weight.

I have to keep the weight in mind since I don't want to run out and buy a new truck at the same time. I have to be able to tow it with my Avalanche 1500, I think the capacity is 7600lbs. >m

Now is a good time to shop for trailers and it's hard to beat the featherlight open trailer with a fairing.  If you get one a bit longer, you can store tires up front.

Good luck,

Dan

I'm really happy with my Featherlight. My Tundra has a tow rating of only 7200 lbs but seems to handle the trailer and Viper ok. With the Race Ramps loading is no problem with the splitter.
Any of the aluminum trailers will be light. Look on craigslist, racing junk, ebay, google.

Ben, Is your trailer a specific model? is there a size? I like the way your system works. I think that would be a good place for me to start.

Hirk,
I think the Featherlight would be a good choice for you having a 1/2 ton truck.
My 10k GVWR Rollback trailer is a 20' er and absolutely love it. This trailer is solid making loading and unloading low profile vehicles a breeze and the 1 Ton Dually (Diesel) I use to pull it makes it easy since my set up weighs in at about 2500 lbs.
Good luck on your purchase.

Hirk,

I don't know the model of my trailer but the dimensions are the following;

Bed is 17' x 6.5'
Overall length is 21'
Width is 8'

I found it on Craigslist and paid $3000

Very nice set up Demoe, I need a truck like that!  >v

Demoe,
I like that trailer. So are you saying I would be able to tow this set up with my truck?

Demoe's trailer is one of the nicest I've seen.

Hirk,
They have a 18' trailer that should be a lot lighter than mine. I have done some mods to mine (i.e. line-x, winch, battery, lights, wheels, D-rings, on and on) that added a lot of weight to it. So the 18' stock version should be at around 1900 lbs. + 3300 for the Viper so you'll be towing just over 5k lbs. That should be fine depending on the gears you have and size of your tires.
Check this web site for more info. http://www.kwikload.com/ They are built in TX. but are available in San Jose (Orlandi Trailers) http://www.orlanditrailer.com/  and Fresno (Jacobson Trailers) http://www.jacobsentrailers.com/

Now we've got to get Demoe out to the track with us.

Hey Demoe, we'll be running Auto Club Speedway at Fontana Nove 17 & 18, and the weather looks good.

How about this one. A few upgrades and it'll be good as new.

Maybe we could set up a prank on Scott.  Steal this classic, been in the family, one of a kind trailer and call...
