Hey Gang,
Here are the details.
Our track day is on for Sunday, July 13 only if I can get enough folks to commit to this event ASAP. Price for our group is $1500.00 for the day. We will need at least 10 cars to get our own run group and 15 would be better. All of the cars don't all have to be Vipers, we will accept a few of our close friends and families cars, but you must know the disposition of the driver.
This is not a race, it is a high performance driving event. We plan to have fun and help other Viper owners enjoy their cars at the track in a safe manner. We will set up our own passing rules and operate much like NASA would with a driver's meeting in the morning before we go out and driver's meetings after each run group.
We will plan to do lead / follow (newer guys can follow the more experienced guys) in small groups during our first session. If, after you have run the first session, you are not comfortable running with the Vipers, you may go down to HPDE 1 or NASA's beginner group. The most important aspect of this is that you are comfortable driving your car on the track.
Safety is our primary concern and neither NASA or the Viper Club will have any bad behavior on the track.
Please let me know ASAP if you want to go. Send a check for $150.00 per car to us made payable to the So Cal Viper Club.
This is a very rare opportunity for track time with your Viper friends. I urge any of you that are interested to come out and see just how good your Viper really is on a road course.

The plan would be:
Caravan to the track from DC Performance - get the cars tech'd
Go to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner - great food!
Check into the hotel where there is two free drinks at the bar (soda or cocktail)
Meet for breakfast - which is included with the room - then caravan back to the track for the day
If interested, on the way home is a "Dave's Big BBQ" for more great food to fill us up as we head home.

Dan,
Im in. >v
I also wanted to do the dyno day too, so I may have to go Sunday only also. Hmmmm....decisions decisions.
Kobi
Dan,
If you're able to get the Sunday only deal as you mentioned during K1, count me in. >s
Kobi,
Don't forget the rotors.
Hey Guys,
Interest has been pretty good so far.
I'm working on getting a Sunday only deal right now with 4 sessions for our group due to the dyno days event. Dyno days helps the club raise money, so it's got priority. We can drive up to the track after the Dyno Day at DC, watch the cars run a bit, get our cars "teched" and then go to dinner.
Keep in mind that all cars will need to pass a tech inspection at NASA. Tires and brakes should be in good condition and fluids should be fresh and full. You will need a fire rated helmet (Snell 2000 or better), long cotton pants and closed toed shoes NASA has allowed SRT-10s to run without a roll bar in the past, so this shouldn't be an issue.
We may want to allow some other cars to join us (family members and close friends?) to help offset the costs but please be careful in your selections. Make sure you know the folks that you consider asking to join us.
We can set up a driver's meeting before our first run group - I can lead that disucssion. We will need to discuss driving line, passing, track etiquette, etc. If at least Ben, Rev and I go, we can set up three lead / follow groups for the first session and debrief after. This will really help first timers. We can take a few inexperienced guys, no problem, especially in Vipers. This should be fun as long as everyone stays within their comfort zone.
I'll let you guys know how this progresses.
Dan

I'm pretty sure I'll be able to make the Sunday session.
I'm trying to get a few other guys as well.
15 shouldn't be too hard to get.
Dan,
I'm in too. Thanks for setting it up.
Ben
Boy, It's sure nice to have some help. Thanks Lance, this could be a lot of fun.
As mentioned above, I think we should plan this around intermediate / beginner levels for the first two sessions at least.
Ben, thanks. I'm kinda hoping you can be one of our lead / follow leaders. You have more experience at Willow than any one else in our group and you're likely our best driver. Let me know if this is not OK.
I'll plan to lead a group and have Rev lead a group too.
Please advise the guys that it will be $150.00 for each car to start. The total cost is $1500.00, so if for example, we get 15 cars, I'll have the club refund everyone's money appropriately. Actually, 20 is a good size group too, lots of room for 20 cars on this track, so that would be OK too.
Dan
Dan,
I'm in. Thanks for putting this together. Big thanks to Rev, Ben and Lance for helping out.
This track day is probably over my head, driving wise... >m
The only track time I have was at VOI 9....
BUT, I would be into going, paying the track fee, if I could take a few rides/laps to see what its all about... <E
I'd love to learn some more about my car.
Could this work for everyone? should I wait for another time...
Or is this like Texas Hold em, you'd love to take my $ >g
Come on down Kala. You can go at your own pace. If Dan, Ben or Rev are driving too fast you have the option of going down to the beginners group. You'll love being on the track.
Kala,
You really should come if you can make it.
We are planning to start the first two sessions with lead / follow excercises. In fact, I plan on challenging the rookies in the group to run all of the turns at a speed of 55 mph for the first two laps without braking. No faster / no slower. All of our cars will easily do this, but it may feel a bit uncomfortable to some beginners. We will speed up in the straights, but then go back to 55 mph for the turns on the second lap.
We will then speed things up a bit, but you can still run at your own pace. NASA will have instructors available for us and you can move to the HPDE 1 driving group after the first session if you are uncomfortable.
One of the best things about this group is that it will be (mostly) people that you know or who are of a like mind. Safety and keeping our cars nice is very important to our group.
If you really don't want to drive, I'm sure that we can arrange a ride for you in one of our more experienced driver's cars. You will need a proper helmet, long cotton pants and a cotton shirt. NASA will likely let us go with short sleeve shirts during this event but bring long sleeves just in case.

I would like to drive as well, just didn't know that there were other rookies going.

Hey Kala,
Just send us a check for $150.00 made payable to So Cal Viper Club.
Dan
I'm taking my car to Dan C next Tuesday to have a check up.
It will stay there until Saturday, for Dyno Day.
Dan & I talked about doing a dyno before and after a computer flash to show the HP gain, that should be fun >g
So should I include Dyno Day in the check? or pay at Dyno Day.
Hey Kala,
Na, just pay DC for the Dyno Day. They kinda like handing us a check for the day.
Thanks,
Dan
K... You got it....
I'm stoked about going to Willow Springs >:D >:D >:D
Hey Kala,
I'm glad to see you are biting the bullet and coming out with us.
When I think back to VOI9 and running the LV roval, it was certainly something I will never forget. At the same time I realize how ill prepared I really was for something like that. No tech inspection, minimal safety preparations done on my part and NO track worthy driving experience. Yes it was fun, but had something gone wrong, the consequences could have been huge.
I have a lot of faith in Dan and have attended a few track events because of it. He has a great ability to provide very useful insight that translates into a security blanket of sorts, and that has allowed me to overcome that "fear" of "track events". I'm still very cautious (slow) on the track, but I'm finding my comfort zone that is safe.
OGO is another great source of knowledge and he has always taken the time to watch over me and critique my runs. Learning from their experience has definitely made it a very positive lesson.
You won't be disappointed.
OK,
Track guys and gals,
Your next assignment is to go to the Willow Springs website at:
www.willowspringsraceway.com/trackinformation/RoadCourseLg.htm
and print a copy of the track map. Take a good look at the track and try to internalize its layout. There will be a test on Sunday morning! (just kidding). Bring this map with you to the event. There are nine turns and we will refer to them by number when discussing the track.
During the first three laps of our first session, i.e. the lead / follow session, the plan is to run the track about 30 to 50% slower than we normally run it, depending on the turn. For example, we will plan to run through turn 2 at about 60 mph during our lead / follow session. All Vipers will be more than capable of running this turn at this speed without even breathing hard. This will help you get familiar with the track and the way your car "feels".
FYI, Ben, Rev and I normally run through this turn at about 90+ mph when at speed. We'll do the same thing at the following turns and stretch the Vipers legs a bit in the back and front straights.
In car instructors are available from NASA and I would like to know who wants one so that I can advise NASA. I highly recommend an instructor for all first timers to this track.

Hey O ,
You're right as usual.
Looks like the weather gods are shining on us.
Dan
I'm planning on driving up early Sunday morning.
Do we know what time the track gates will open in the morning and what time they will start doing tech inspections?
There will be at least 4 of us cruising up and so I'll set up a meet point ( Roxford and the I-5 ) and meeting time.
Is this filled up yet or are we still trying to get more vipers?
Lance
>m
OGO KNOWS
7AM Gates open
OGO O O O
Hey Lance,
Check the NASA website for more info.
The driver's meeting usually starts at 7:45 AM sharp.
Tech is normally open before and after the driver's meeting.
Not sure when we run yet, likely 9:30 ish.
Don't have a final count yet but should be less than twenty so far.
I'll get with Ryan at NASA on Wednesday and try to get things firmed up.
Dan
Hey OGO,
Are you going to drive on the track with us? I need more lessons on the finding the line and getting setup correctly for 3, 4 and 5.
Hey Lance,
I asked OGO and he didnt confirm or deny. Maybe if he takes a nap first >1
Noel
I can answer for O , he's probably napping right now. He's not planning to drive and isn't a very good passenger (like me).
He will be our Crew Chief and help with track related details and advice.
Hopefully, folks will seek O out and listen, as he has lots of good info to share with our group.
Dan
>g Finally got helmets! Count Paul & Pam in for the track event on Sun. 7/12!!!
Woops, I mean Sun. 6/13. We're new to the track too. <t We'll take all the instruction and help we can get, and hope we're not too slow to be honorable Viper drivers. Paul & Pam
Hey Pam,
You can modify your posts, just click modify, then make your changes.
Cool that you are posting.
Hope to see you Sunday, July 13 at Willow.
Dan <2
Check's in the mail, Paul's double checking the car, and now we want to ask if we can have an instructor (we plan to share the car) This is getting more exciting by the moment and I'm getting kinda nervous. We're studying the track map and those tight turns look pretty, well, tight! Are you sure you want me on this track? (Deep breath, I can do it!) Pam
>g
Hey Pam,
Arlene drove on this track for about 10 years >v plus many other tracks. No big deal ( you go faster on the street than you will on the track ^8 ^8 ^8 Pictures below is Arlene @ Willow Springs
OGO O O O
Hi Pam and others,
I recommend that all drivers who have not tracked their car or who have not driven this track before have an instructor in the car with them. I've put together a list of drivers and sent it to NASA so that they will have a number of "in car" instructors available - you are on that list along with many other drivers.
Dan
Hey Dan,
I've never been on this track would you please add me to the list of those needing "in car" instruction.
Thanks.
hey dan,
do we need to regester for nasa or just come up
I know most of the guys will be heading up on Sat....but for those who are heading up early Sunday morning....
Meet at Spaghettini's in Seal Beach at 5:00am. Leave prmptly at 5:15 Take the 605 to the 5 fwy and exit at Roxford in Sylmar to meet Art and Ben around 5:45 leave there at 6:00.
Lance
Art,
Got you covered with an instructor.
Chris,
Here's the plan and schedule so far:
All of us will need to register with NASA when we get to the track after we've had our cars "teched" by NASA. We will all start as members of the So Cal Viper run group and run together in the first session.
Mandatory drivers meeting at 7:45 AM for all drivers.
All of our first timers to this or any track will need to attend the first HPDE 1 drivers meeting. This will be a very educational meeting for our rookie drivers. You, Tim, Ben, Rev, Jonathan, myself and other experienced drivers will not need to attend this meeting.
We should all try and park together - which may be a bit of a challenge. Our So Cal Viper group will plan to meet at my red trailer at 9:00 AM (Jonathan's trailer has AC, so maybe we'll meet there - he will be parked next to me). We need to disucss our first session, lead / follow, passing zones, etc. Our So Cal Viper group's first session starts at 9:45 AM.
We will plan to meet again after our first session to see how everyone is doing. I can't tell at this point but I'm going to guess that some of our rookies may wish to drive the second session in HPDE 1 (a slower group). They will be given the opportunity to move to HPDE 1 at that time.
HPDE 1's second session begins at 11:15 AM. Our second session begins at 11:40 AM.
I'll be emailing this info to our group tomorrow.
Glad you can make this.
Dan
LETS GIVE OURSELVES A HAND! ^8

Don't worry, you will have a blast. The track is safe with a lot of run off. Have an instructor and drive within your limits and ask LOTS of questions. I have about 2,500 laps at Willow Springs so I will be able to answer any questions. Some things to do in advance:
Torque you lugnuts to 90 lbs. if you don't have a torque wrench ask some on at the track to borrow one.
Tire presurres to about 29-30 lbs for beginner/novices
Remove all loose objects and floor mats.
Check oil.
Bring a cooler with lots of fluids!!! I cannot stress this enough, hydrate, long sleeves & pants and a helmet and adrenaline =
HOTSun screen should do it.

Thanks Dan and Cathy for setting this up for us. To have our OWN run group amidst all the other cars in attendance today was simply awesome.
It was an ideal situation for us "track rookies" to gain some valuable track time and experience.
Also special thanks to OGO for spending the day in the sun offering us valuable tips and info.. >s
As expected, it was warm today, but not nearly as bad as I thought it was going to be.
I unfortunately did not take many pictures today as I was having too much fun learning on the track.
Pictures are posted on my site www.kouchicentral.com (http://www.kouchicentral.com)

How did the afternoon sessions go?
The afternoon sessions were awesome! The temperature went down and there were only a few cars on the track which made for some fast times! I was very happy to have stayed for the 2 afternoon sessions I had my best time on the final session when I was able to pass 3 cars, that shall not be named >w.
Big thanks to Dan, Cathy and Dave for setting this up and making sure everything ran smoothly. Also, big thanks to Ben and Johnathan for showing me the line, I had a blast! >t
Kala thanks for taking the awesome pictures, hope your knee feels better.
Looking forward to Viper Days.
Hey Art! Can you show me the line next time if I guess who the 3 cars you passed are? >l
Dan/Cathy - Thanks putting events like this together for all of us to enjoy. I know It takes allot
of time and effort. >v Also, thanks for allowing the slow vettes to run with us. Both Ozzy and Dennis had a great time. All they need to to now is get a Viper <m
OGO - thanks for coming out and all your advise! <2
Sure thing Noel ^8
Hey Art,
So I take it you like the Kuhmo's !!???
Good job....Fast Eddie's got some competition.
Ditto what Art said; someone was smiling on us for the afternoon run. A breeze came up and it cooled down about 15 degrees.
I took Sean Gorney for a ride during session three and he was quiet the entire ride (he had just run in a race prepped Mustang with his dad's instructor). Later during our cool down lap, all he could say was WOW, I gotta get me one of these! He said there was no comparison between the Mustang and the Viper on the track. Sorry Tom, the boy is now "Viperized".
I invited Manny Coats to run with us in the last session in his race Honda. Manny is very fast in that car though he was having some handling issues that day. Rev, Chris and I were on a mission to run faster than Manny (can't get beaten by a Honda Civic when you're in a Viper). Manny was running 1:37's according to his GPS timer, so we followed him for a couple of laps to check his line, then blew by him in the front straight and never saw him again (thanks to some blocking by Chris and Peter)!
Chris's tires were going away, so he had an interesting slide / catch / slide after turn six that I watched in my rear view mirror while going about 100 mph. I chased Rev pretty hard, had him in my sites for the last 4 or 5 laps but just couldn't catch him. Damn that guy's fast. I'd guess we were both running 1:34's during that last session.
Everyone who stayed made huge improvements. Art was hauling butt like he said (look out fast Eddie), Pete Martin ran very well for a first timer, Jeff Gaines ran very well, Peter Picked up the pace (despite being surprised by seeing a Honda Civic in his rear veiw mirror), Scott Hirco was haulin' too. Lots of fun for all and no one went off track.
Hope to see every one at Viper Days. You guys now have a head start on the rest of our rookie pack.

I hadda blast, I regret not getting to run in the Viper group and "play" with some of the hot shoes, but I hadda let Rocman drive his ACR sometime >w HPDE 4 was fun though. It was great running with you guys but it was greater hot lapping the ACR ^8, high 1:29s are in the future, see ya at VD.
BTW, Art I got your email and true I will never forget our first meeting <B
Ron
Wing and Splitter arrived from Autoform last week - didn't have time to install them.
Will have them on before Viper Days, so it'll be Old ACR (my 2001) vs New ACR.
I just hope I can keep up.

Kala thanks for taking the awesome pictures, hope your knee feels better.
Thanks Art... I'm gonna go have it looked at tomorrow...
Cathy's gonna kill me for the # of photos I took and loaded on her thumb drive >:D
I loaded some to my .mac space. I can't seem to get them to show up on Firefox.
No problem with the other browsers...
These are not cropped or color corrected...

Hey Ron,
It was nice to finally meet you.
You are one lucky dog to have those kinda privelages with Rocman's ACR.
I felt kinda guilty just taking pictures without asking.
Hope to see you again soon,
Lance
Great pictures Kala....
You're hired and appointed new club photographer. This means that you are now obligated to show up to every event ! >v Trust me, it's a great gig....I do it for free ( and so will you !)
You may want to adjust the color saturation a bit though....seems like most of the cars had an awful blue hue to them all....especially around the headlights. >w
Thanks for picking up the slack while I was out enjoying myself.

No way Lance >s >u
Blue Hue???? You're a Nikon Man now.... There's no stinking blue hue... ^8
Nikon perfection is all I see.
Here's some photos I posted... another page without the slideshow.

Ron / Rocman,
You will have more horse power than me (in my GTS) with the full Belanger system on an 08. I may have a slight advantage in torque. It will be fun to run together again regardless of the outcome.
Hope to see you guys at Viper Days.
Dan
PS You guys should have heard Kala laugh out loud as we went around turn 2 at speed. She was having a blast riding in my GTS. That's my kinda gal (no offense). I've had several guys get close to puking (had to stop once after only two laps) when I took them for a ride around the track at 75 - 80% speed. Get well so that you can drive. I know you're going to love it.
PPS I've asked Ron to try and help set up a Viper run group at Cal Speedway in Fontana on the "Roval" with Speed Ventures on Nov 22 & 23. Please let me know if you are interested.
Hey Dan,
I'll do the Cal Speedway with you guys.
Kala,
I was referring to this "blue hue" >l
There was a bunch of "blue hue" going around that day ..... I think O brought it with him .....
Here is some video from my Go Pro camera I had mounted on my NACA duct from the Willow springs track event july 13th. The sound sucks but you get the idea just make vroom vroom sounds in your head.
It's long almost the hole session. I did my best to get by Jeff but his car is Damn fast and was pulling me.
Next time.

Dan, that ride saved my day... >v
I was so bummed not being able to drive that day.
Thanks to you and Cathy for allowing me to go for a spin.... er... ride around the track >t
I loved the roval at LVMS... Is the Cal speedway similar?

Kala,
I was referring to this "blue hue" >l
OMG.... >w You went to the trouble to PS a diagram for me <
I did "get" the blue hue post... I was in a hurry, and wasn't "clear" with my jesting. I'll do better next time...
I did notice that even with my 200 mm lens... The cars looked too far away. I hate cropping.
So since you are the So Ca Nikon Photog.... Can you put in an expense request for a 400 - 500 mm lens??????
We could share ya know ^8
I also misplaced a 77mm Nikon lens cap... If found can someone hang on to it for me?

Scott, that is great video. Wish I heard the roar of that V-10 though. I could barely catch it but it was so worth it. Thanks for sharing. Good times!
Kala,
Yes, CA Speedway is similar to LV Speedway - there's just no instructor riding along with their hand on the e-brake. Like most events, Speed Ventures has beginner, intermediate, advanced and race run groups. You can pick your group and run at your own pace (with and instructor if you'd like) ..... and they allow passengers in all but the race group.
I ran in the advanced time trial group last year and was getting 150 mph in the front straight (first time out) before I went to neutral throttle (ran out of courage) and turned down into the big left hand sweeper.
I just got my wing on this weekend, so I should be able to do better this year.
The infield portion of the track is a bit slow and set up for "ricers" but it's still a fun track to run.
Dan
hey rev, where is your video, maybe the one with me on your a** <2
