Title: FIRESTORM 2007/ Mudslide 2008?
Post by: Kala on October 22, 2007, 04:24:42 PM
I just got off the phone with Stephie... We realized that there's a fire in Foothill Ranch  ^7
Anyone know if Dan & Cathy are OK?

I have a truck and a 20' car hauler if anyone local needs help moving. Call me 805-231-8333

I just got an e mail from JonB...

Dave Cawthorne,  Dan & Cathy have stored their cars, and have evacuated their homes.

I'm so glad to hear they are all OK.

Wow!  Thanks for the update Kala, glad to hear they are okay.  Yesterday during the 10 o'clock news I heard that the fire was around Foothill Ranch and they immediately came to mind.

Hey Art

Its so surreal watching the news... Talking to Stephie, we both got it about the same time that Dan & Cathy were near the fire. KCAL then scrolled the streets at the bottom, the Prez's street was one of them... Stephie tried to call and didn't get thru...

Some how "Live From Washington State" JonB knew the score!  ^1

Even when we didn't know S**t here...  ^8

I hope everyone makes it thru this unscathed. We've had to evacuate a bunch of times... I feel bad for those evacuating right now....

I talked to Cathy yesterday morning and they were in the process of moving out the vipers and valuables.....Haven't heard from them since.

I also talked to OGO early yesterday and he had already been evacuated out....his cell phone was out of battery and I haven't talk to him since.

I talked to Race Yellow Richard in Fallbrook yesterday afternoon and he was in process of moving out his cars as his area was under voluntary evacuation.

NOT GOOD  :-[

We are all crossing our fingers for EVERYONE affected.

Thanks for the report Lance. Hopefully you will hear today that all are OK. Please let us know when you know.

A fire just started somewhere in Rancho Cucamonga. Do we have any members there?

Hey Gang,

We're just getting "back in the saddle".  Cathy is re-connecting her computer as I write this.

Had to evacuate the house.  Took the computers, records, jewelry, photos and some other collectibles.  Filled the back of my truck and our car's trunks.  Fire came down the hillside behind out neighbors house.  Real hot, real fast.  Embers and ash everywhere in 40 to 60 mph winds.  Nasty.

We'll post some photos later.

Stored the 3 Vipers at Greg Killingsworth's commercial building along with Greg's ACR.  Thanks to Greg for the assist.  Greg is not out of the woods yet so to speak as the fire is going his direction.  He spent last night on his boat  We hope he is a lucky as we were.

At our house we were surrounded by fire and the smoke made breathing difficult.  One queen palm caught an ember and burned a bit.  We were a bit concerned as we have 17 big queen palms around the house.  Small sections of our wooden fences on each side of the house caught fire and we lost a storage shed.  All fires were extenguished and our house is a bit messy and smoky smelling with ash everywhere, but still standing.
>2
Thanks for the help and concern.

We should be back working again later today.

Looking forward to Hearst Castle.

Dan

PS  Hope Dave Cawthorne and Paul Hawker are OK as they both have homes in Rancho Bernardo.

Great to hear from you Dan!

Hopefully Dave, Paul & Greg come out of this as you guys did! Images on TV looked really bad in your hood.

Hi Dan & Cathy,

Glad to hear that you are allright and got away with minimum damage.

I called Lance yesterday evening and he told me you talked to him earlier in the day.

We were all very concerned about you.

I have seven other friends across SoCal who also evacuated their houses, from Malibu to Castaiac.

Does anybody have an update on Dave Cawthorne and Richard?

Phil

Hey Mr. President,

Happy to hear your family is in good spirits.  Let's keep all of the folks affected by the fires in our thoughts and prayers.

I talked to OGO this morning....he and his family are safe.....but worried about their home.  He was going to try and make it back into R.B. this afternoon to check it out. When they left yesterday morning, houses a few blocks away were on fire.

I talked to George Dauphine today, ( he is in Poway)....His home was thankfully ok, but the fire was right there and went on by.

I just talked to Richard....He and Charlene are at Paul and Pam's house in Vista.  They are just waiting it out and crossing their fingers.

We thought you might like to see a few of the pictures we took yesterday during our evacuation.  These pictures were taken from our balcony, and garage/driveway.

This firestorm has hit many Viper Members – Greg Killingsworth lives in Modjeska Canyon.  Dave Cawthorne and Paul Hawker both live in the Rancho Bernardo area.
Race Yellow Richard lives in Fallbrook.  I'm sure there are others I am unaware of.

We're keeping our fingers crossed for you and your families.

Keep us posted friends,

CathyE

We've now got all the Vipers and less important vehicles in a "safe zone" a mile away.

Late afternoon we're allowed back into the neighborhood on foot - 1-mile hike, uphill.

The terrain and our view for some time has definitely changed.

The fire continues on wrapping around us from one side to the other - again taken from our balcony, a shot east then west

Finally, another shot from the driveway toward the east where the fire rages on... But, we made it and we're SAFE!

Glad you guys are safe.....we'll keep crossing our fingers for all the other Viper members that may be affected.

Update on our members and this darn fire:

Paul Hawker believes that his home is OK - He now has to worry about his second home in Julian.

I spoke with Dave Cawthorne this morning - he will be checking out his house this afternoon (if he can get in)  He's crossing his fingers that it's still standing.

We're still waiting on news from Greg Killingsworth, but right now it seems that by some miracle, his house in Modjeska Canyon might have been saved.

Richard Palkovic has been evacuated but hears his house is still standing.

Wel I am really happy to hear everyone is ok. I have been watching it on the news up here and it looked horrible. We definitely do not ever have anything like this in Texas. We are getting the smoke from all of the fires but it isn't too bad. When you come up here it should be pretty nice... very hot and calm today but supposed to cool off tomorrow. So it should be back down in the upper 60s lower 70s for the run. I will be heading down tomorrow or Friday early to pick up my baby from DC Performance. He has her all back together and ready to go. Anyone have any idea what the traffic is like down there?

Again I am happy to hear everyone is doing well. Hopefully there isn't anyone who lost their home in the group. Take care and see you all on Saturday.

Traffic? There's no traffic, its all parking lots here now...  >1

I went down the 101 today, PCH was closed due to an accident, so the 101 got fairly backed up.
I have seen worse. Just leave a little earlier if you can.

See you Saturday...

Hey all;
We got three mandatory evacuation reverse 911 calls starting Monday in Fallbrook.
We are hold up in the Paul/Pam Winters hotel in Vista.  We snuck back in Monday night and grabbed the Vipers and the cat.  We tried to go back today and all major and back roads were heavily blocked with police.  North Fallbrook is still threatened but the Rice fire which already burned numerous residences on the east side is mostly contained from Gird road to the east.  We are a couple miles west of Gird Rd. The saving grace is one of our neighbors stayed in his residence and says we are still OK as of today.
We are hoping to get back in over the next couple days.  If we can, we still plan to go to Heart Castle.
That's all folks.

Well, while the fire was a bit more threatening, the smoke and ash really sucks.....and it doesn't seem to get much better anywhere in the OC area.

How's the air / smoke in San Diego?  LA?

I'll bet the air is better up in Northern Cal and it should be good at Hearst Castle!

In any case, we should all likely change or clean the air filters in our cars soon after the air clears.

Hey Dan,
You are right on the air filters.
Last night I pulled the filters on mine.  The run on Sunday through all the dust and sand really clogged up my air filters.

I also pulled HANDFULS of leaves, styrafoam, paper and ROCKS from the radiator area.

See you on Sat.

What's important to Viper owners?  The Viper, of course!  First thing "rescued and stored" from Richard's garage and into Paul's garage.

Any word from OGO yet?
Title: Re: FIRESTORM 2007

OGO gave me a call yesterday at 2:30pm.  They were finally let back into their neighborhood.
Thankfully his home was spared.  Houses a block and half away however, burned.

I have not heard of any members yet that have lost their homes.  We can only keep crossing our fingers that this will remain to be the case.

Dave Cawthorne ""OGO" was able to get to his house yesterday and it's still standing  >2

He stayed at the hotel again last night, and will bring his family home today.  He said things look pretty good, just ash covered.  Unfortanutely, he will not make our Hearst Event.  He wants all of us to have a good time for him.  Personally, I plan on having a martini in his name  :D

Greg Killingsworth in Modjeska Canyon - his house was also spared, he was very lucky as the firefighters had no air support and had a lot of difficulty getting to the fire.  12 of the firefighters had to put on their fire suits and cover up as the flames blew over them, dangerous location.

Paul Hawker's home is also good, passed around his place.
