Title: SPRING MOUNTAIN - Oct 3 & 4
Post by: ViperX on August 17, 2009, 12:26:42 PM
Hey Track Guys and Gals,

A group of experienced Viper Club "road course" drivers will be be headed to Spring Mountain Motorsports Park for a weekend of driving October 3 and 4.  For more info on the track, go to:  www.springmountainmotorsports.com

Our hosts will be Michael von Quilich, his wife Virginia and friends.

The weekend's activities include an early BBQ dinner at Michael's place in Pahrump on Friday night, driving all day Saturday (with at least two run groups, i.e. intermediate and advanced running 4 to 5 sessions), group dinner Saturday night in town at Tomasinos (nice new restaurant) and driving all day Sunday.

Track fees as a guest of several members are only $60.00 per day.  This is a super deal at a very nice facility.  If any of the ladies come along, they'll have a very nice clubhouse to "hang out" at complete with munchies, cocktails and a great view of the track.

Passengers are allowed and must wear helmets.  We'll have to let you know about passenger suits, if required to wear them or not.

Here's the run group plan:

The Radicals run first at 9:00, followed by advanced sports cars at 9:30 and novice/intermediate at 10:00, then repeat the sked.  Lunch is 12:00 - 1:00.  Radicals race, then adv. sports cars at 1:30, followed by novice/intermediate at 2:00, then repeat the sked.  I am bringing both the ACR and the blue car.  I will use the blue car to do the lead follow for the intermediates.  Track goes cold at 4:00, then we go to Switchcars for appetizers and beer until 5:00.

HOTELS:

The Pahrump Nugget usually has the best deals, their number is  775.751.6500,  681 S. Hghway 160, which is on the corner of Highway 372 (road from Baker) and 160, www.PahrumpNugget.com    Sometimes they sell out, so I suggest making reservations now.  Two other choices are Saddle West,  1220 S. Highway 160,  turn right at 372/160, located on right side of the highway, 800-433-3987,  www.SaddleWest.com.  Best Western Pahrump, 1101 S. Highway 160, also turn right off 372, on left side of Highway 160, 775.751.5100.  www.BestWesternNevada.com

There will likely be a few drivers from the Nevada Club in attendance this weekend too.

FYI, Cathy and I are planning to "trailer" our car out leaving at about 10:00 AM Friday, October 2.  We could set up a "meeting place" at the Barstow Outlet Mall Center for those of you interested in caravaning.  We'll be there about 11:30 AM and probably eat at Baja Fresh.

Put me down as a maybe.  Questions:  1) How do we register? 2) Which hotel are most staying at?  I am right by the 15 and 210 if anyone wants to meet at my house and caravan from here. Let me know if anyone wants to do this and will post my address.  I know in the past the club has used a gas station on Baseline off the 15.

Hey Carlos,

Put me down as a maybe.  OK.

Questions:  1) How do we register?  Just let us know you're coming.  Payment is to be made to your sponsor, i.e. the $60.00 per day the day(s) you drive.

2) Which hotel are most staying at?  Not sure on the where.  Need a few others to chime in.  I've stayed at the Pahrump Nugget before and it's OK.  You won't spend much time in your room.

I am right by the 15 and 210 if anyone wants to meet at my house and caravan from here. Let me know if anyone wants to do this and will post my address.  I know in the past the club has used a gas station on Baseline off the 15.

We'll be stopping at the Barstow Outlet Mall as above.  Gas and quite a few food choices.  We'll likely eat at Baja Fresh.

Dan

Hey Guys,

For those of you that would like an advance look at the 3.1 mile Spring Mountain track layout in detail, I recorded a few laps I ran in my GTS ACR last fall for the track configuration that we'll be running on Sunday from my GPS based data logger.  This data will help you learn the track quite a bit quicker and quite possibly safer

It's a big track with lots of turns and will take a few sessions to learn the basic layout.  I remember being a bit frustrated by the number of turns the first couple of sessions myself.  A track "preview" will help you enjoy your weekend.

The track configuration on Saturday is very similar, so it will help you learn most of that track as well, just not the long back straight, which may "test your courage".

I plan to share this info with those in our group that are interested on the Saturday before the event at my house.  I'm thinking Cars and coffee, breakfast and then a track review?

Those of you that are interested, please let me know.

The track review sounds like a good idea.  That track looks complicated.
So we would meet the day before the coronado speed festival?

Carlos,

Ben, Peter and I will be staying at the Best Western.  Once the date draws closer and we know when people are leaving we can setup a caravan with a meeting point in addition to the Barstow Outlet Mall given by Dan.

Dan,

When do you plan on showing the video?  Would it be possible for me to get a sneak preview of it the weekend of the Ventura run, since I'm doubtful for Coronado?  I would ship it back to your place on 9/14.

Hi Kobi,

Yes, at my house on Sept 26 after breakfast.

Art,

It's not a video, it's data from my data logger program (Race Pak) which requires specific software (and some knowledge of the program) and is viewed on my computer.  It gives you "car" position on the track, speed, G forces, accel and braking around the entire track.

I showed one of these "laps" for Buttonwillow before we did Viper Days earlier this year at Lance's shop.  I'll try to find a way to "show it" on my LCD TV in the family room so that all can get a good look.

Brent,

Very cool.  See you there.

Dan,
Sadly I will not be able to make this event.  I will be in Kentucky working on a movie for part of September/October, so if i am home on the weekends, I will be spending time with the family.  The map of the track  looks like fun, especially Saturday...
Have fun,

Ray

Dan,
I need to pull out. I will not be able to get all my stuff together for this event. I'm working on a big brake upgrade for the GTS and I need to spend the money on that/ I'm shooting for Willow with Jim Saxton.

Hey Mike,

I'll check with Lance to see what his thoughts are.  What time do you have in mind?

I'm quite sure, well be making a pit stop to pick up Dave Dolan at the Big Boy in Barstow.

In all likelihood, I'll be meeting up with Ben and then we'll meet up with Lance and the rest of the folks.

Art,

No special time in mind but was thinking about getting to the BW hotel around 5 pm and then backing into the departure time.  I figure about 2 hours to Barstow, or less to say Victorville, plus 2 to 2 1/2 from Barstow to the hotel.

I'm somewhat flexible but it would be hard for me to be in Barstow say at 12 noon.

If you and Lance would keep me posted to your plans that would be great.

Hopefully when you guys see me I'll have transformed my viper into an ACR.

should be a great weekend!!!

Take care!

Mike

Oh yeah !    I got my Partner in Crime again.    Too bad Pahrump doesn't have a White Castle (actually I think they do....but I'm pretty sure they don't have hamburgers there.... >1 )

I did some homework.....The total drive time from Ontario to Pahrump is 4 hours with no traffic.

So for anyone who is planning on driving out on Friday, I'm thinking that we should meet at 11:00 at the Chevron located at 12659 Foothill Blvd, Etiwanda, CA 91739
http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=12659+Foothill+Blvd,+Etiwanda,+CA+91739&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.724817,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=34.107434,-117.528734&spn=0.008866,0.013733&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr (http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=12659+Foothill+Blvd,+Etiwanda,+CA+91739&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.724817,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=34.107434,-117.528734&spn=0.008866,0.013733&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr)

We should probably hit the road by 11:15.

We can stop in Barstow for gas and grab a quick bite to eat.
From there it is 3 hours into Pahrump.
This will get us into Pahrump shortly after 4:00 so we'll have just enough time to check in, get cleaned up, rest and head over to VonQuillich Manor

Lance,

To get there by 11 am I'd need to leave around 10-10:15 am and that's about an hour early for me.

If you decide to leave there at 11:15 then maybe I can catch up with you guys in Barstow.  Let me know where you plan to stop in Barstow.

thanks,

Mike

Hey Lance,

Numbers are a good idea.  I just don't know if SM requires them.

Kurt Soleburger has a grey / black ACR like mine, but without the red driver's stripe.

Doubt there will be too many identical cars at this event, so I won't put them on unless asked to do so.

On going home, the traffic shouldn't be too bad if you go the back way through Baker.

Cathy and I will be driving home Monday morning.

Dan

PS  You guys need to let Michael and I know if you are bringing a passenger.  Need to get a head count to be sure we have enough food for the BBQ on Friday night.

PPS  Hugh Hoard just decided to come and will be driving his new Corvette ZR1.  Should be fun to beat up on him.  That car will heat soak like crazy on the track and likely loose 100 hp or more.

Lance, all my commuting OC-Vegas frends tell me that the traffic is worse in the late morning, early afternoon departures.  The party crowd sleeps in and hits the road at the noon check-out time. Stay at the track!

Hey Mike,

Flipped your pic for you (above).  Car looks great.

Be careful with your ride height on the drive out.

If you buy a 10 mm ratcheting closed end wrench (Sears), you can drive out without the front splitter addition on the front of the car and install it when you get there.  This will help a bunch with ground clearance.

Dan  <2

PS  Lance, you might want to do the same.

ACR's in attendance at this event as follows:

1 - Dan
2 - Lance
3 - Mike B
4 - Pete M
5 - Kurt S
6 - Johnny Yuma
7 - Michael vQ

Dave Dolan couldn't make it or we'd have had 8 ACR's at this event.

We'll have to get some pics.

Wait till you guys see Michael's garage!

Also, Bruce B, Kobi S and Carlos H all have wings and splitters.

I agree.  If you leave early (10AM-noon), you will most likely hit the Vegas traffic in Baker on through Barstow.  I usually leave from Pahrump around 4 PM and it's smooth sailing at that time.

Hey Guys,

Just got off the phone with Michael vQ.

We should get a visit from John Morris on Friday night at Michael's BBQ.  John is the track owner, racer and overall nice guy.

Also, Michael is stressing a bit about the BBQ right now as it's grown to what may be 50 attendees.  I mentioned that we'd be glad to help out, so we're looking for a few volunteers to help with the grilling, food prep, clean up, etc.  Cathy and I are in.  Any other volunteers, please let us know.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=12659+Foothill+Blvd,+Etiwanda,+CA+91739&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.724817,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=34.107434,-117.528734&spn=0.008866,0.013733&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr

We should probably hit the road by 11:15.

We will stop in Barstow by the outlet center off Lenwood Rd for gas and eat at In&Out Burgers.
2821 Lenwood Rd. Barstow Ca  92311
I figure we should be at In &  Out around 12:15 or so.

We'll try to get out of there by 1:00.
From there it is 3 hours into Pahrump.
This will get us into Pahrump shortly after 4:00 so we'll have just enough time to check in, get cleaned up, rest and head over to VonQuillich Manor

I'll be at the Chevron station at 11:00 for the caravan! ^2
I'll also help out with the BBQ.

Brent

Hey Doc,

We were waiting for you to show up so you could pass Lance, but after seeing him drive this weekend he could blow the doors off of your SSG and FGT  <D =15  >w Lance's new nickname is the "Flyin' Hawaiian Prince"

Don't fret about the pictures I know there are going to be a ton of them, hopefully up soon.

Did you take the rest of the gang out for a run?

Yes, come on out.

I'm going to guess that some guys will only run Saturday.

Just let me know for sure that you're coming.

Dan  <2

Hey Ice Man,

Me thinks you're going to have to revise your "guess" because I think most of us would have loved to stay another day to run a different configuration.  I think we all could have crashed at the Red Baron's Palatial Garage  >r  It's going to be hard going back to Willow Springs to hunt for shade after seeing the amenities at Spring Mountain. >w

Big thanks to you, Cathy, the Von Quilichs, Brent and all the other members for making this awesome event possible. >t

Arturo del Toro,

I love it,  The Flyin' Hawai'ian Prince,  FHP, sounds like a government agency!!!

Now lets not start with the hype about those funny cars (ACRs)  we all know they have a slower top end speed.  I am sure FHP would pass me, buy that would probably be when I was exiting the track!!!   >v

Remember, I put back together people who are not as skilled as the SC Viper Club on the track.  Tends to diminish the desire to push the envelope on speed.  Just the comfort of knowing the SRT 10 has a higher top end speed is enough to allow me to continue to hassle the Royalty!!!

Love it  FHP!!!

Arturo,

Missed the Saturday run, Raceyellow Richard got a group going on Sunday, OriginalRoot bagged on me Friday night so I went to the Mini Cooper Rally on Saturday AM when I found out abuot the Santa monica Mtns tragedy, still haunts me.....

Guess the numbers of club members that actually read the forum is not as large as we think?  Anyway, always up for a run, just need more than two vipers and it is a date.

First things first.............

A huge THANK YOU to Michael and Virginia for inviting the Sidewinders out to Spring Mountain !
Also a huge THANK YOU to the entire staff out at Spring Mountain for treating us as if we were members of this magnificent facility

Thank You Dan and Cathy for taking care of all the details which allows our club to participate in so many great events....this one was a BLAST !!!

(and Desert Rat and I didn't even get into any TROUBLE !!!)

I'm about 1/3 of my way through the 1000 plus pictures  that I came home with.  I will hopefully have them up on my site late tonight or tomorrow.  I'm trying hard to process pictures in between all the work that I need to catch up on.
As for the new ride....all I can say is      "GO GET ONE Banzai Ben"
What a joy this car is to drive !  I did not push the car very hard at all and was well within my comfort zone. This car is truly going to fly once I get comfortable with it.  I'm moving up to Advanced GREEN group next time !!

Once again, Thank you to all who made our weekend an absolute blast !
I can hardly wait till next year !

I have pictures up on my site www.kouchicentral.com (http://www.kouchicentral.com)

Here are some pictures from  Friday.

We had 11 vipers meet up in Ontario which made for a nice Snake line on the 15 up to Barstow.

We made a quick stop for lunch in Barstow and then hit the road for Pahrump

As you can see, it was a looooong straight road.

But the scenery was truthfully really nice.

Now this is a garage !!!!!!!

Lance - I never thought you could out-do yourself, but awesome pictures!  You really captured the event and the spirit of the group.

If you haven't already done so, please go to Lance's web site.  He has the 3 days in separate sections.  Unbelievable track pictures as well.

Thanks, as always for your dedication.

That is Fast Eddie's car.

We were on the 15 coming home and he was giving me and Art the point-by...but forgot his window was up !

Seriously though, this was a scary thing to happen at 70 mph !
I've heard of it happening to a few other guys, but in those cases the cars were parked and the window just implodes.  It has to do with the window adjustment when the door gets closed and the glass moves up.  If it is not properly adjusted, i.e. goes up too much, it puts a lot of stress on the glass.  It essentially just explodes.

Incroyable, Edwardo!  Man that must have shaken you a little, hope you had sun glasses on!  Now I imagine after seeing this, one wonders if they are next.  Scary!  Any dealer information on how this happens or how to look for signs one may be pending a window disaster ???  Is it heat or cold oustside temperature related??

Here is a thread on Viper Alley about the implosion, seems to be a rare and isolated event, lots of theories, nothing concrete,  Should be under warranty.  Although with that fact, does not lessen the danger and worry about it happening.

Did you guys see the bicycle race on your way from Pahrump to Baker?  Every few miles I would pass a minivan with a banner on it stating something like "CAUTION; BICYCLE AHEAD" and "Frigate Bird".  I was trying to figure out what these people were doing out in the middle of nowhere pushing pedals.  I finally found some links.  These people are amazing.  Check this out!

I pushed my pedal about 250 miles over the two day weekend, yet these people pushed their pedals a full 508 miles; and they did it on BICYCLES!  Now I'm feeling like a sloth.

The fastest person finished the race in 29 hours, 10 minutes and was racing SOLO!  Well... I guess that's only 17MPH, so maybe I don't feel so bad after all; at least I know our Vipers can beat them :).

I was up for over 40 hours the two days before Friday prepping my car and I thought I was nuts; many of these people were PEDALING for over 40 hours; through the desert!

Hi Everyone!

Virginia and I have had an incredibly hectic week after everyone left, that's why I'm posting this a week late.

We had a BLAST!!  It was a 10 on a scale of 10.  I am proud to be a member of the Sidewinders and look forward to many more track events.  For sure, we will organize another event at Spring Mountain!!  We appreciate everyone coming here and enjoying the track.  Thanks for the kind comments!

Lance takes incredible pics!  I am going to write an article for the SoCal magazine and the Viper Magazine as well.  I would like this opportunity to thank Dan and Cathy who were a big help in getting everyone organized.  Without them, this event wouldn't have happened on the number of participants.

Lindsey is our membership director and wants to send everyone who drove their cars at the track a thank you.  Please send me your email addresses and I will forward them to her.  [email protected]  The staff at the track was very pleased and impressed with the way we drove our cars!!  She would like to send all of you a "Thank You" email, so if you want, send me your email addresses and I'll forward it to her.  [email protected]

Last Wednesday, we drove our Venom Red/Silver Coupe in the first Barrett-Jackson exotic car parade on the Las Vegas Strip.  Only 50 cars were permitted and I'm proud to report that we had 10 Vipers proudly driven in the parade.  Thousands of people took pictures as we drove by.

That's all for now...

Secret viper spy photos have just revealed an interesting trend in the Pahrump Snake Boys after the last weekend of racing.  Several vipers have undergone a snake skin green changes and highlighting, which I must say looks awesome!  Something good always come out of hanging with the FHP

Yep; I left Sunday after the last (4th) run (plus about an hour of de-taping my car!).  They were still peddling away....
