NEW INFORMATION! CHECK THIS OUT!
SEDONA, ARIZONA
WITH THE ARIZONA VIPER CLUB
October 21 -23 (Friday thru Sunday)
The Talking Stick Resort, in beautiful Scottsdale, has a casino and spa to make your stay even more fun. This is a new hotel/casino and the rooms are luxurious. This place alone would make a fun destination, and added to the Sedona Viper cruise, it all makes for a real fun time for all. Friday morning, October 21, our club will caravan to Arizona. We will be staying at the beautiful, new (please click this link)Talking Stick Casino and Resort in Scottsdale. (http://www.talkingstickresort.com/).
Click here for route map and meet points (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=217592281470847386812.0004ae19506f10eca2fd3&msa=0&ll=33.890367,-117.557831&spn=0.496458,0.585709)
The OC guys will meet at 7:45 and leave promptly at 8:00.
The Valley guys will meet at 7:00 and leave promptly at 7:15
The SD guys will meet at 7:45 and leave promptly at 8:00
We will all meet in San Bernadino at 9:00 and leave as soon as all 3 groups arrive.
Our target is to get to Palm Desert at 10:00 to pick up the Desert guys.
Friday evening we will meet the Arizona Club at the famous PINNACLE PEAK PATIO STEAKHOUSE in Scottsdale. This place is famous for its "no necktie policy" and boasts a collection hanging from their rafters of around a million ties cut from unsuspecting diners over the past 47 years. This has always been "the place to go to" when visiting the Scottsdale area. The Arizona Club has made special arrangements for our two Clubs to enjoy dinner together at 6:30. Dinner will consist of salad, BBQ steak, chicken, baked potato, beans and dessert. ****Please let us know if you would like a vegetarian meal ****
Saturday morning, the Arizona club will meet us at our hotel at 7:30AM and at 8:00 we will all leave for a day cruise to Sedona. Since Sedona is a busy LITTLE town and parking is always a challenge, they have arranged for lunch at SLIDE ROCK STATE PARK, catered by Red Rock BBQ. (veggie burgers are on the menu also) The Park offers a 0.3 mile trail of moderate difficulty if anyone is interested in a short hike.
After lunch you are free to enjoy Sedona on your own. There's hiking, shopping, art galleries, etc. BRING YOUR CAMERAS! This is truly a magnificent and unique piece of the world to enjoy.

We will return home on Sunday. Room reservations to be made for Friday & Saturday nights for this event.
<17
We have sold out our room blocks. Unfortunately the room inventory is getting very low, so they are not going to block any more rooms for us. If you want to go, please send me an email ASAP and I will call and see if I can arrange a room at a slightly reduced rate. I was able to get 3 rooms at $159.00/night but with each passing day that price will go up. OR you can call the hotel direct and see if they have any specials available 866-877-9897 but the last I heard was that the rooms were over $200.00/night. We are going to PREPAY our Dinner and Lunch for a combined cost of $65.00 per person. Please note that this also covers the parking fee at Slide Rock Park THE DEADLINE TO PREPAY IS OCTOBER 14th !!!

Just kidding, of course.
Cathy and I may make this one unless there's a local track event that weekend, and there may be one.
Hope all is well with you and yours.

Plans for this event are starting to take shape !
The So Cal Club will caravan out on Friday and return on Sunday.
We will block out rooms at the Talking Stick Resort and Casino in Scottsdale www.talkingstickresort.com (http://www.talkingstickresort.com)
This is a brand new and VERY nice resort with beautiful rooms and facilities.
They have offered the Club a great rate of $125.00 per night Fri/Sat. They have also agreed to providing us our own area in their parking structure to park our Vipers. This was not an easy thing for me to convince them to do for us...
In order to get this rate, we need to buy rooms in blocks of 10 which the club is responsible for.
I have the first block of 10 ready to go. Once these are gone, we will have to buy another block of 10.
It is important to reserve your rooms early. As we get closer and closer to October, our guaranteed rate will continue to go up.
Call to book your rooms 866-877-9897
Great job Lance getting us our own parking area! Put me on the hook for 1 room!
I just have 2 more questions:
1. Where's the Craps table??? Art's gotta win him some gas $$$ <11
2. Where's the Roulette table??? Gary's gotta win him some gas $$$
I guess I'll have to have Lori give me some pointers on Let It Ride =28
>g
Add Paul & Pam to the "for sure list!" This is our old stomping grounds and we'll really enjoy this trip!
A big thank you to Lance for all the work he's doing to set this up! He's been working on details every since the President's Meeting last month and has a ways to go. Biggest hurdle is guessing how many rooms to block off! If we could give him some sort of indication of who is possibly going, it would probably help. Pam
Lance please add Eddie & Gladys to the list.
Thank you
>v
Add Cheryl and Mike to the caravan becaue that area is really great in Oct. <K
Okay put me down for a room. I may be by myself but I'm working on itbwith my lovely wife. <11
Hello-I was just in Sedona last weekend and it was FANTASTIC!! Going to try real hard to make this event!!
>r
Ray + 1
I think I have convinced my wife, Joan, to take this trip. Our last Viper trip was to Hearst Castle with my RT/10 with no top on, in the rain.
Hey John,
If you soften up the rear springs in your ACR, switch to about 800 in / lbs, you will enjoy the ride a whole bunch more.....and so will you wife. >w Ask Lance about this change.
And it will be nice having a top and AC!

This will be a really fun event for sures.
Yes it is a bit of a drive, but getting there will be half of the fun.
Talking Stick is a really nice resort and Sedona speaks for itself.
For anyone contemplating, don't wait too much longer. Time is running out on our room block and then the costs will go up.
For Those already on the list, PLEASE take a minute and either mail in a check to Nino or pay via Paypal for the dinner and lunch. The AZ club has put in a lot of work and effort into this event and I want to make sure they are not having to front all the money for food as well.
THANK YOU !!!
Lunch and dinner is prepaid when do we eat ? It is good to read it over again I missed the prepay part. Thanks Lance
Just prepaid for lunch and dinner through Paypal.
Lance,
Looks like I'm flying solo, so if there is anybody that is in the same boat and wants to share a room let me know.
Check for dinner and lunch is on its way to Nino, I can already taste the "Cattleman" porterhouse steak =19
Put Cynthia and Grace on the plane and pick them up in Phoenix. The hotel is 15 minutes away and they will enjoy the pool and facilities.
Teresa and I want to make this one!
Craig and Dolly are in. Reservations made.
I am really upset. I have to cancel this trip because my knee surgery is scheduled for Oct 20. Joan and I were really looking forward to it. Have a great time. >o
John.
I asked a friend how he felt after his recent knee surgery. His reply....can't kick :>)
Less than 1 month to go <K <m
Nino,
Check your email for paypal notification of my payment! Can't wait.
Any plans made yet for the drive over?
I may just head out the 8 and meet at the Talking Stick and then drive back with the club on Sunday.
^ I was wondering about the same thing.
My son (Dustin) and I are in! Reservations are made. Looking forward to seeing everyone. I will mail payment for meals to Nino this weekend. <m >j <m

Ron, I think your best bet is to take the 8 and then take the 95 to try and intercept us on the 10.
I think our best bet is to meet somewhere off of the 10 East. Does anyone know of an off-ramp on the 10 that has an easy on and off and that will accommodate 15+ Vipers?
From the San Fernando Valley, I plan on taking the 210 East to the 10 in Redlands, perhaps we can all rendesvouz in Redlands?
Jay, Demoe, Eddie and Scott you fellas want to meet at the Denny's off Roxford from the 5?
I have been talking with a bunch of guys and even one of our members that lives in Blythe about our trip out.
Here is the route that I have tentatively laid out
Click here for route map (http://maps.google.com/maps/ms?msid=217592281470847386812.0004ae19506f10eca2fd3&msa=0&ll=33.890367,-117.557831&spn=0.496458,0.585709)
Modified the route to go through Redlands
I'll get some times figured out very shortly.
FYI, when I made my reservations they said all of the rooms set aside for the Viper club are now out, so anyone who hasn't made reservations should. They also said they only have a few more rooms open for that weekend so make reservations ASAP. They will still give the Viper Club rate of $125.00 as long as they have rooms.
Lance I like the stops on the route shown. Great placement to pick up everyone along the way. >s
Just one more; I'm shown on the list twice.
This looks like a great route, Lance! Everyone interested in joining the group to caravan to Phoenix should be able to be at one of the spots you've chosen. This is going to be a different, and FUN Viper-run!

Art that will work, are we going to meet them in Garden Grove or maybe we could hook up in Corona ? I good with anything that beats work.
Lance looks good we will meet up at some point before Riverside hope the 10 is open do not want any <19 or =15 going on.
Hey Eddie,
I'm not sure what the traffic out your way is like. Hopefully the traffic eastbound on the 210 and 10 won't be too bad.
We will leave Krispy Kreme in the OC at 8:00
Let's plan on meeting at the Redlands stop at 9:00am
This will put us in Palm Desert at 10:00
We will get into Blythe for gas and a quick bite to eat at noon.
If all goes as planned, we should roll into Scottsdale around 3:00 and hopefully miss the Phoenix traffic.
I put the request in to the Resort to have all our rooms ready for check in at 3:00 and they will do their best to accommodate us. We will have a little bit of time to get settled and cleaned up before we head out to dinner that evening.
I talked with our contact at the resort and she told me that the room availability is starting to get pretty thin. For anyone on the fence about this, I would not wait too much longer. The $125.00 rate will disappear pretty soon as she can only hold rooms for so long before releasing them back to the general reservations.
Also make sure you send your money in to Nino for the Dinner/Lunch. This needs to be in by October 14th.
Don't miss out on this traveling trip and the beauty of Sedona !
Sorry folks buy Mike and Cheryl Sinkinson have to cancel this trip. We were very much looking forward to making the run with all of you and having a great time. Unfortunately my (Mike) back is still a serious issue. While after three months it has been slowly getting better, it still has a long way to go. At best I can do :45 - :60 min driving at a time before my back starts using four letter words on me. Hope you all have a safe and wonderful trip and we look forward to seeing all the great pictures. Aloha . . . Cheryl & Mike. =16 =17
Sorry to hear that Mike. Hope your on the mend soon.
Lance that sounds good we should have a small caravan heading out that way.
Art Redlands stop is about 1.5 hours from Denny's I know the 10 gets bad anytime of the day we should do 210 all the way down to the 15 or even back track a little, we should leave Denny's no later that 7am what are your thoughts. Eddie
Eddie,
The 210 East to the 215 South to the 10 East is definitely the way to go, since we minimize the time we are on the 10.
Mike,
Sorry to hear you and Cheryl can't make it, hope your back gets better soon. Won't be the same without you there. =16
Art / Eddie,
I'll be taking the 138 - 15 - 215 - 10 and meeting up in Redlands.
The 138 is never really crowded lucky for me.
BTW. I'll trailering my snake with my F350 crew cab Dually
Hope everyone can keep up with me. Lol
I have an empty rear bench should anyone need a ride.
Mike and Cheryl you got first dibbs. =21
Art sounds good to me, Demoe we will try to keep up, Mike sorry for the back pain wish you well. Art let us know what time to meet at Denny's this is going to be a fun trip.
I think meeting at 7 at the Dennys and hitting the road at 7:15 is good, hopefully we don't encounter any overturned rigs like we did on the way to Salt Lake.
I just talked to the Hotel and all of our rooms at the $125.00 rate have been booked up. I am trying hard to get them to get us another block of rooms, but the best $$ they can offer at this time is $159.00
Rooms are very hard to get right now. If you respond on this thread or shoot me an email, I will do my best to get your name on the list for a room.
Scott and Jay are you guys interested in joining Eddie and me in the caravan out of Denny's?
For those that are still interested in attending it's coming down to the wire, please see Lance's post above this one, rooms are selling out FAST!
This is going to be a really fun run. Yes, it's a bit of a drive, but that is the beauty of it. For me the more seat time the better. Of course Pinnacle Peaks >q The Talking Stick =28 and Sedona >u aren't too shabby either.
The first post has been updated with reservation information, route map and meet points !!!!

You all be careful out there.
I heard some stories about the Viper "caravan" to VOI 11, which I won't repeat here.....
Check your tires and your fluids before you go and keep a driver with a Valentine 1 up front.
See you at the track,
Dan <2
Just came through Sedona in August and there are lots of cops around as I'm sure the AZ Vipers can attest to.
Supposed to be upper 88-90 around Phoenix and mid to upper 70s in Sedona.
Count me in. Still working on hotel, paid up for the dinner and lunch via paypal. Looking forward to seeing everyone again.
Hey Mikan,
I got an extra bed if you want to be roommates.
Just checked the weather forecast, Saturday and Sunday are both showing 80 sunny degrees with lows in the mid-50s. Oh YEAH!

C'mon, work your photoshop magic and put the glitter girl in her place for me.
This was DEFINITELY an AWESOME event from start to finish.
Every detail was taken care of and everything went as planned. I know that Rich, Kim and Jeanette worked like crazy to put this event on and we out-numbered them 2 - 1.
The plan was to bring the 2 clubs together and forge more friendships between the two Clubs. I know we succeeded in doing that and I look forward to hosting a 2012 event with the AZ club here in So Cal so that we can spend more time with the great members of the AZ Club.
I finally went thru all my pictures and they are now posted on my site www.kouchicentral.com (http://www.kouchicentral.com)

Hey Demoe,
The shot from the cliff down on the cars is cool. That was a quite a hike that you made to get up there .

Looking good Lance. How did you make my wife disappear?
I put some video on Youtube {rayodude}, see if you can find your car!

We had a blast on this run. By far the most fun since VOI. Great group of people from SoCal and AZ, fantastic hotel / casino, excellent weather and beautiful scenery. Thanks to the AZ club and SoCal for putting this together.
Jennifer and I really enjoyed the trip, thanks to everyone who put so much work into making it great. In fact my car liked Phoenix so much that it decided to stay ;)
Despite the car breaking down and missing the drive to Slide Rock Park and Sedona, we still had a great time. The main reason for going was to meet people, and the car breaking down forced me to not only meet new people, but depend on new people. Even though we're new and still getting to know the Socal people, it was great to also hang out the AZ people. I can honestly say that everyone I met made me proud to be a Viper owner. I can't say that about some other car people. I genuinely enjoyed everyone's company this weekend.
Thanks to Marv for helping me return the rental, and Demoe and Laura for taking us home. Thanks also to all the people who pulled over to help and try to fix my car on the spot.
I'm glad that my car will be in the capable hands of Eddie Martin at Bill Luke Dodge this week to get it fixed.
Next week if the car is fixed, we'll return to AZ and hopefully see Sedona and some AZ club members again.
~Jay
Jay ,
Have they found out what is wrong with your car yet?
Jan and Jennifer (not jen : >)
It was good to meet both of you. Sorry about your car. We were ahead of you when you lost power. Everyone was concerned, but when Lance showed up, he brought everyone up to speed.
That is a great thing about cruising with the Club. Lots of good people willing to help out.
Kind of sounded like a speed sensor, or some other electrical gremlin.
Hope to see you both at future events.
Paul & Teresa
I don't have any info yet, Eddie may or may not be back in town yet. I don't plan on picking up the car until next weekend, so I haven't been harassing them yet. They went ahead and ordered a new cat assuming that is the problem.
Hopefully the cats will covered by the 8/80,000 emissions warranty. I also hope they can figure out what caused the cat to go bad.
~Jay
Jay,
I'm not an expert but If the cats were clogged you should have a error code with a check engine light. I would be sure they show you proof of the clogged cats. If the cats were clogged debris would be coming out of the cats in the form of small pellets from the clog. I was standing right in front of the exhaust and had my leg there, nothing was coming out other than exhaust. Also if they are clogged then what caused it? Because it will happen again if it's not fixed. The cats would be the result of a problem some place else. I really would stress they check the mass air flow sensor on the front of the intake. That would cause the car to run rich like it was.
Just my two cents. Maybe someone else that knows more about this could chime in.
Scott
Thanks Scott, I'll make sure I tell Eddie all that when he gets back. The guys there on Saturday seemed a little intimidated by the Viper. From what I have heard about Eddie, he will be able to sort it out. But I will definitely tell him what you are suggesting.

Hey Scott,
I'm certainly not an expert either, but I had my passenger side cat plug about two years ago and my driver side about one year ago. No codes. When I heard Jay's symptoms, I told Lance that it sounded like plugged cat. It sounded exactly like what I had experienced.
The second time it happened, we were down in Coronado (on our own, no event) and limped home with a hole in the headers, melted plug wires and other miscellaneous melted goodies.
Craig
Craig,
The question is what was the cause? They don't just clog for no reason. Not like you have 100k on the car. =5

Nobody has been able (willing?) to answer that question.
The second time it happened, they replaced the header and melted stuff believing that was the cause for the bad running. Ultimately they had to go back in a replace the plugged cat.
Here is some info I found "A catalytic converter relies on receiving the proper mix of exhaust gases at the proper temperature. Any additives or malfunctions that cause the mixture or the temperature of the exhaust gases to change reduce the effectiveness and life of the catalytic converter. Leaded gasoline and the over-use of certain fuel additives can shorten the life of a catalytic converter.
A catalytic converter can also fail because of:
Bad exhaust valves on the engine
Fouled plugs causing unburned fuel to overheat the converter
Sometimes you can tell that a converter is clogged because you don't go any faster when you push the gas pedal. Also, there usually is a noticeable drop in gas mileage associated with a clogged catalytic converter. A partially clogged converter often acts like an engine governor, limiting the actual RPMs to a fast idle. A totally clogged converter causes the engine to quit after a few minutes because of all the increased exhaust back pressure."

The above were my symptoms. The rest did not apply.
My thought has to do with: When downshift breaking, the exhaust pops and crackles - a lot. Maybe that's a mixture problem affecting the cats under those conditions? I downshift often - but I've driven my two other Vipers the same way with no problems - the '96 and '01 for five years each.
My exhaust crackles and pops all the time when your getting off the gas or downshifting. <2
Think that is pretty normal, most high performance exhaust do that. >v
I've not been able to explain it nor have it explained.
Maybe Jay's guy will sort it out.
Guess you'll find out when it melts down again =16

Thanks for the Easter Egg hunt. Good of you to post the link. ^2
I was hoping this was like a one time fluke, not a recurring mystery! I'm still trying to figure out if the cats are still under warranty or not.
The car was running flawlessly up until I got on the freeway. Even leaving the parking lot it still felt fine, but seconds later when I got on the freeway on-ramp I felt the sudden loss of power.
I did notice that one exhaust tip was black, and the other was silver. My assumption that the silver one was clean and the black one was dirty. Maybe the black one was normal and the silver was covered in metallic dust?

Hey Scott, Jay and others,
"Cats" do clog from time to time. I had the cats clog in my Supercharged 04 convertible.
A couple of reasons why cats clog in Vipers assuming a stock car:
1 - Oil in the intake, passed into the cats. If there is no mechanical issue, try installing a catch can to keep the oil out of the intake manifold.
2 - Dirty fuel injectors. Vipers usually "sit" longer than most cars and injectors tend to get dirty. Injectors should be cleaned every couple of years, not just on a mileage basis. I run Red Line fuel system cleaner through my Vipers several times a year and it really helps. It's available at Pep Boys. Also, if you are having issues like clogged cats, RC Engineering can flow check your injectors, clean them and return them to "better than new" condition. I keep a spare set of "cleaned" injectors and change them every year in my track Viper or about 6,000 miles.
3 - Spark plugs get dirty too and should be changed on a "time" basis, like every year or two, not just a mileage basis. I change the spark plugs every year too. Very easy to do.
4 - I tried some fuel additives and found that they left a bunch of deposits on my plugs and clogged the cats (as above in my 04). I now avoid fuel additives like Torco or other octane boosters that leave deposits on spark plugs and valves. If you want higher octane, you can buy 100 unleaded at several places in the LA area and at most race tracks.
You are in good hands with Eddie Martin.
Dan <2
Jay.
As Dan said. You are in great hands with Eddie Martin.
Eddie is one of the better ViperTechs and works with a fantastic dealer. He will have access to all the right tools and diagnostics to determine your issue, not only with the cats, but what ever might have caused them to fail.
Eddie has tons of experience working on Vipers, and I believe he will have you back on the road with a great running Viper.
If you have any upcoming maintenance needs, or wish to consider performance upgrades, you might wish to have Eddie take care of them while you Viper is in the shop. =27

I just got a call from Bill Luke Dodge. Clogged cat was the problem, and it was covered under warranty! It won't cost me anything.
I haven't spoken to Eddie yet, but according to Earl who I talked to, Eddie has never seen anything like it before. I don't know exactly what that means.
I asked what caused it, and their best guess was all the years of the car just sitting around and not being driven.
What I don't get is how something so severe could happen instantly. When I talk to Eddie, maybe he'll be able to explain it.
I'm planning to fly out on Thursday to pick up the car and finish our vacation :)
~Jay
Jay,
As you have seen above from Dan's comments and mine as well. The cats don't get clogged sitting around and not driving. There is a cause and if it's not found then it will happen again. Also as I said be sure that they show you the clogged cat even though its warranty I would check it out anyway.
Hirk
Hopefully when I talk to Eddie, I might be able to get more information out of him. The warranty is only good through mid January, so I really do need to get to the heart of the problem.

I've seen something like it. :(
And I'm eager to see if he can come up with a cause.
Good news Jay. Glad it was easily fixable >v. Have fun
I was finally able to talk to Eddie. It appears that the cat just failed for no reason. I also called Dan at DC, and he said he has seen the same thing a few times before. At 14,000 miles, maybe it was just a factory defect.
If I had to pay for the repair, I might press for additional testing, but since this isn't costing me one cent, I just need to be thankful, and hope for the best, ... or hope that it fails before January ;)
~Jay
Craig wins the prize for correct diagnosis of the problem.
But the root cause is still unknown.
Glad to hear that it was a relatively simple fix and I hope you enjoy Sedona !
Might be a good time to speak to Eddie about an extended warranty.
The Arizona club just posted Sedona event pictures on their site.
http://www.azvipers.com/
This was a well presented event.
Driving through the back way into Sedona while the trees were changing colors was a bonus indeed.
Thanks again for both clubs putting together such a well planned and executed event.

I think the way the car is driven is part of the problem with the converters. We drive around town jump on it here and there, that is dumping more fuel than needed. Every time you go W.O.T. ( wide open throttle ) we are dumping more fuel than the engine needs we all drive like this at times <2.Like Scott was saying about the popping in the exhaust it is normal it is caused but a rich exhaust unburnt fuel hitting the converters and igniting. What I will do once a month when out in the Viper on a long straight I run the engine up to 3,500 to 4,000 rpm and drive for a couple of miles, this heats up the converters very well and will burn off carbon build up in the exhaust. I agree with Dan do not use fuel additives. Some fuel injection cleaners are good to run, dirty injectors is a big part of the problem. The computer control system is to turn on the check engine light if something is out of range. The driving like mentioned above will not set a check engine light on until the damage is done. I get a vehicle in my shop a couple times a year for lacks power does not have the get up and go. We find restricted converters due to short around town driving the vehicle never sees the freeway. After scope and scan on the engine no problems found everything is in specs. We take it out on the freeway heat the converters up blow it out add a carbon cleaning detergent to the gas tank all is good. There could be many causes and it never found for a bad converter, good fuel is a key do not buy off brand fuel for your Viper.
