SPECIALTY PERFORMANCE TEAM at WILLOW SPRINGS with SRT
January 5th, 2013
Dan Cragin (
formerly DC Performance) has launched a new business, Specialty Performance Team (SPT) in Alhambra, CA, which will focus exclusively on Viper, SRT and McLaren customers.
SPT is hosting a private driving event at the "Fastest track in the West"... Willow Springs Raceway. So...COME OUT AND WATCH and hang out with our group! Maybe you'll score a ride in the new Gen V Viper! Or a ride with one of our experienced (and fast) club members!
PLEASE LET US KNOW IF YOU CAN STAY FOR A BBQ AT THE END OF THE DAY TOO. HIGHLIGHTS OF THE EVENT WILL INCLUDE:
- Media from top automotive publications
- Race Vipers from past and present
- Viper Club members from near and far
- Non track driver's "sedan laps" session, which is limited to 60 mph, no helmets required and passengers are OK.
If you're a Sidewinder, hopefully you've received your personal invitation. If not, please email Dan to see if there is an open slot available: [email protected]

I'm really looking forward to this event! I RSVP'd a week ago. I hope Dan got it :)
~Jay
Dan,
I will drive my Mamba out and be a spectator. This looks like a good way to start 2013.
Rolf
Don't forget to put me on the list! >w
Thank you!
You ARE on the list ! =27
I just sent Dan an RSVP email as a spectator. I will be bringing my 2009 ACR and staying for the BBQ.
Looking forward to the event!
Thanks,
-Mike
I didn't get an email, but hopefully there's still room! Sounds like an awesome event.
I'll be there.
Hey Guys,
FYI, this event is a bit unusual as the club is "helping" with the planning and organizing of the event, we're not actually in the "driver's seat", so to speak. Specialty Performance Team is renting the track and doing the "inviting" as it's their dime.
Soooo, when we post the names of the attendees, we are posting the names that Dan Cragin has provided us with. IF you don't find your name posted here (left out again), please contact Dan Cragin directly and ask him to confirm your attendance and let us know.
When we get your name from him, we'll post it as soon as I (well as soon as Cathy) can. I still have to work some to pay for tires, gas, brake pads, oil changes, track fees, etc., etc.
I've taken the liberty, with Dan Cragin's permission, of inviting all club members to attend and hang out at the track to watch us run, attend the group BBQ, check out the Gen V Vipers, get a chance to chat with Ralph and a chance to ride in a Viper at speed with one of our experienced VCA members, etc.
For those VCA members that don't track their cars, this is the track event you should not miss and is a great kick off to 2013 for the So Cal Club, the Gen V Viper and Dan Cragin's new venture, SPT. Non track driver's should also get to drive the track at lunch time during our "sedan laps" session, which is limited to 60 mph, no helmets required and passengers are OK - this can be fun!
Hope to see you all at this event whether you are driving or watching.....also hoping for good weather.
See you at the track.
Dan <2
Dan,
I sent you an email last night. I'm new to the VCA but hopefully as of Saturday I will be an official "Sidewinder" member. (Guys if there is anything else besides owning and tracking a Viper that is needed to become a Sidewinder please let me know!). If there is any space available I would really like to attend.
Though I am new to VCA, I've raced (SCCA, NASA, Grand Am Cup and many others) since 1996 and instructed off and on since 1998. I'm just new to Vipers, having recently bought two that I've lusted after for many years, a 2000 GTS and a 2009 Coupe/VOIX edition. Neither will be a trailer queen. I'm more at home on a track. This year I'm racing some other marques--including two snakes of a different vintage that have some kinship with the Viper. This year's race cars are a 2009 Mustang in NASA ST3/STR3, a 1966 Shelby GT350 in HMSA and maybe SVRA/VARA, and a 1964 Shelby King Cobra (1 of 6 original Shelby team Cooper Monaco V-8 "widow makers").
Please let me know if you've got some space!
Yours in speed,
Donn V.

Guys,
Here are a couple of options for those of us that would like to drive 2 days:
1 - We rent the track ourselves on Sunday, which would be pricey with only 15 drivers. We'll contact WS and check it out but my guess is cost would be at least $300 per day with only 15 drivers - we need more drivers to get the price per car down.
2 - We can run "Test and Tune" with the track on Sunday as they have already agreed to this. This can be fun, however, cars will need to be "track prepped" to run Test and Tune, i.e. 6 point harness, fire bottle, roll bar, driving suit, driving shoes and a Snell SA 2000 helmet would likely be the minimum AND we will be sharing the track with other cars. I've done this a bunch and it's fun for me but it might not be fun for all, especially our novices.
3 - We can run "Test and Tune" on Friday. Requirements would be the same as above, the track would likely have less traffic and the cost is fixed at $150 per day plus whatever the one time registration fee is for the year. We'll check with the track and post the info.
Please post your thoughts on this so we can work something out for our group.
Dan <2
Either way works for me Dan. Friday Test N' Tune is a nice deal as well.
I'm thinking that the Sunday Test and Tune would work better with Ralph's plans but we should definitely check with him to see for sure.
Dan, test and tune works for me either day.
Better would be exclusive track for us Sunday, but I don't want to pay $300. Can you check to see what the cost would be with 20-30 cars? This could be a great opportunity to bring out newer drivers to run the track. Maybe Bob Blizzard could come and offer some classroom instruction. I'd be available to help drive along with some of the folks and I know we have others capable too. Maybe run 3 groups, novice , intermediate and advanced.
Dan Cragin to tech the cars and hold a tech session?
Mike
Thanks Dan. >s
See everybody there.

Dan -
I'm not planning on tracking the IS-F so put Marcela and I in the "watching only" category. Although, we'll be bringing our helmets in the hope that we can get a ride-along in the Gen V to hold us over until ours arrives.
Also, please add Jay Woodard to the list - he'll be along as a guest of ours (with the stipulation that we get any Gen V ride-along he may get >w).
Hi Everyone and Happy Holidays!
Our SPT track day is around the corner and all of us at SPT and the So Cal Viper Club are looking forward to seeing you. This will be a well-attended event with Vipers from all corners of Southern California as well as exotics like the new McLaren MP4-12C. This is a driver education event and track groups are organized to reflect your driving skills (beginner, intermediate and advanced). Mild to wild, everyone in his or her comfort zone.
Beginners, we have a great program setup for you so don't feel intimidated, this is going to be fun. For you faster folks, we will have some of the fastest Vipers ever to lap the "fastest track in the west". You will be in good company.
For those who just want to watch, we have sedan laps to get to know the track, a "Budweiser Tower group" for the best view of the action, and limited advanced driver passenger sessions later in the day for those who want to see what a fast lap is like.
Here is the important stuff:
• A sponsored BBQ at the track will follow the event (about 5:30). Registered attendees are free and guests are $5.00. Please respond if you will attend and the number of guests you will have. There will be some special guests and speakers.
• There is an open track day on Sunday for track Prepped cars, cost is $150. Call Willow Springs Raceway for additional information.
• All cars need to be Tech inspected, this service will be provided at the track, but we highly recommend you have your car inspected before you get to the track. SPT will be scheduling inspections and track service prior to the event. Call 626-588-2883 to schedule your appointment. Unsafe or unmaintained vehicles will not be allowed on the track. Limited trackside service will be available. (See attached vehicle Tech Sheet and recommendation sheet for your Viper.)
We have 2 host Hotels within 10 miles of the track.

Notes for Vipers on the track
First off, everyone should have a chance to see what the Dodge Viper can do on a road course in a controlled environment. With lots of torque and some of the widest performance tires available in the market today you will never see the limits of your car on the street. Track time makes you a better driver and gives you new respect for your car.
Here are some tips to make your track experience the best. First off, the Viper engine is a "wet sump" engine. That means that all the engine oil is held in the oil pan. One some high-speed tracks the oil can move to one side of the pan and cause loss of lubrication. To keep this from happening, always make sure your engine oil level is not low. If you own a 1996-2006 model, overfill your oil level about ½ quart above the full line on your dipstick; this will give you an extra margin and peace of mind. If you track your car regularly, there is an oil pan modification to eliminate this condition. Many Viper specific companies carry these.
Tracking your Viper is just like flying an airplane. You need to do a good pre-flight inspection. Make sure your brake and clutch fluids are clear (not discolored). These fluids absorb moisture and can boil in track use and cause the brake or clutch systems to malfunction. These fluids should be changed every two years. Your car should be well maintained and properly serviced.
Tires and brakes are the most important. Your tires should be in good condition with even wear and at least 2/32" tread. The better condition your tires are in the better grip you will have. If your tires are over 6 years old they most likely are as hard as hockey pucks, not good for grip. For street tires, air them to 32psi cold for the track. This is the best starting point, to "dial in" the pressures check the tire pressures right after a few spirited laps, if they pressure go over 40 psi hot, air them down some. Your brake pads should have at least 5mm pad material remaining.
If you have a floor mat in your car, take it out for track use; it can roll up under the pedals. Make sure there are no loose items under the seat or in the trunk, these can roll around. Wear shoes that are closed toed ands do not have loose lases. If you have a convertible, put the top on. On the track run with your windows down, this is safer if you need to exit the car in event of an accident. Get a helmet, its required in most all beginner driving events. It should be a Snell 2005 or better helmet.
There are some safety items that will make your car safer for the track. Tow hooks front and rear will make your car easier to tow if you go off track, a fire extinguisher securely mounted in the car will help protect you in case of a vehicle fire. 5 and 6 point racing belts will hold you in the car better and improve your confidence level. A roll bar will give you improved rollover protection and make the car handle better. If you plan to track your car regularly, talk to a Viper tuner like Specialty Performance Team, there are numerous things that can be done to your Viper to make it safer and perform better.
For beginner drivers that want to improve, the best money spent will be to put a track specific alignment on the car and hire a driving instructor.
Owning a Viper is about having fun, live life and explore the limits.
Drive safe.

Well gang, the good news is it looks like there is no rain in the long range forecast for Saturday or Sunday!
The other news is that it's going to be a bit cool and maybe even chilly in the early morning.....but Lance and I have each reserved a garage, one for me (Cathy makes me do it) and one for the club. I'll have a couple of electric heaters set up in my garage and likely Lance or somebody else can bring a couple more for the So Cal Club garage. We are right next door to each other, so it should be fun. Also, I'll likely park my ACR in the garage between sessions, which should help warm things up.
Definitely bring your folding chairs and warm clothes to this one.
See you at the track,
Dan
I emailed Dan... Can't wait to be back at WSR =15

Dan E, I have a couple of new space heaters in storage if you want me to bring them for one of the garages. Let me know.
What a great way to start the New Year!

Kala,
Thanks for the offer. If you can bring them, I think most of our guys would love it.
The garages have electricity, so that makes it much easier to keep things warm.

To All Drivers,
I met with Brian Kono yesterday at Lance's shop. I've asked Brian to make up a few of his front tow hooks, stainless steel screen protectors for our front grilles and stainless steel screens for our SRT brake cooling ducts and bring them to the event.
I highly recommend these items and run them on my ACR. Ask Peter Hauser if he'd recommend installing a screen over your front radiator area.....he has some recent experience dealing with this.
The front tow hooks are about a 10 minute install, so you guys could do them at the track. The screens are DIY items for many of us but Dan Cragin could also install these for you.
I'd also ask Scott Hirko to bring a few "in car" fire bottles with mounts (mounts in front of the front passenger seat using the two existing front seat bolts) for our guys who don't have them yet. This is an easy install too and could be done at the track in about 10 minutes. This item could literally save your car from becoming a total.
See you at the track.
Dan <2
If anyone knows a head of time that they want to get a fire extinguisher and bracket for their viper please let me know I have gen 1/2 and gen 3 brackets and red, black, and chrome extinguishers.
Give me a call to discuss details and I can bring it out to the track.

Thanks Dan! After seeing the debris that punctured Peter's oil cooler last time I need to get the fron screen. Great that Brian will have some on hand. I definately want one. Mike

Mike,
These things take hours to install from what I understand. I want to do them too. I think you need to leave your car at his shop for the day.

What tire pressure would you recommend for PS2 tires? Any more or less on the track, than on the street?

Brian will be coming to WSIR and will have sets ready to be installed at the track !
He should be able to get them in pretty quick.
The big issue will be for the guys that already have a tow hook installed on their car.
If it is not a removable tongue piece, then it will be very difficult to get the screens installed.
Brian will have tow hooks at the track as well.
I will be at Spaghettini's on Sat morning at 4:50 am and will leave at 5:00.

I've never run PS2's but I would think the factory recommended stock pressure would be good.
Others that run those tires might want to chime in.
29 lbs always seemed to be the magic number. Most start at 29 lbs and then check them after some laps to see what temps they get up to out on the track. PS2's are pretty good track tires.
However, this should be a relatively cool day, so a couple extra pounds probably would not hurt.
On this same note, when you first go out on the track, be sure to get your tires a bit warm (first lap is for this) before getting heavy on the throttle. Warm tires stick a whole lot better than cold tires. If you are over driving your tires they can also get so hot that they begin to feel greasy. If this happens you must drive smoother or slow down a bit in the corners.
Sometimes people get used to how well their cars handle in the first session, and forget that they need to warm them up again the next time out.
This is going to be a fun day.

From my last track day, the rubber looked like it was melting off. Sounds like I need to be a bit more smooth.
thanks,

Lance,
I'll meet you at Denny's at 5:18.
Damn, you guys are early birds. We'll be there some time after nine...save us a spot in the Gen V ride-along line!
Speaking of early, Chick-fil-A won't even be open yet! Will the cafe at the track be open in the morning? Or is it closed for special events like this?
thanks,
~Jay
Hey Matt,
I'll save a spot for Kiki, but you're in your own >w
Jay,
Don't worry about Chick-fil-A, I can get something for you at Denny's <11
Can we invite friends or co workers to come out and watch? If yes is there a entrance fee?
Anyone is Welcome to come out and watch.
I think the fee to get in is $10.00/person at the gate which goes directly to the track.
If they are staying for the dinner, then you need to let Dan Cragin know and pay him.
Happy New Year. What a great event. xxx I'll be driving up from San Diego with two grandsons Jack (10) and Bobby (7) and maybe my son-in-law Jim (so unfortunately not in my Viper). Jim and I have raced my Viper at Willow Springs. xxx Oops - gkids have basketball games so I'll be solo. This will be my almost-VOI 12. I will attend the barbecue.

Jay, it's gonna be much colder Saturday, your tires will be fine. Won't hit 50 till 10-11 am, then top out at maybe 60-65. Start at 29 all around then check pressure as soon as you park after your session. (and write them down). You'll want them to get to about 36 psi hot. Left sides get hotter due to turns 2, and 8-9. By the afternoon sessions you may end up starting at 27 on the left side as the air and track temp will rise. If I can help you with anything let me know. Mike

Yes, Saturday, bright and early! But maybe not as early as Lance and them, they are real early birds.
I plan on getting there around 7:00
Ben, I'm planning on 7 am arrival too. Leaving Monrovia on the 215 about 5:30 am, maybe I'll see you on the road? BTW my van will kick your trucks ass, don't try to race me!
Lance, thanks for scouting out the 14. Don't have a radio but keep an eye on your cell.
Glad to hear Brian can install the facia screen, my tow hook comes off in 1 minute, if I remember to bring the corect allen wrench.
It's going to be a nice day and a great event, see everyone guys there!

Ben, these photos shot early in the day when the sun was in the east casting shadows on the cars from the angle taken, but your screaming SSG monster still looks awesome. Obviously you have a flare for the right color! I am kinda partial to that color as well! <2 <2 <2

What a great day out at WSIR !!
Clear (chilly) blue skies and a private day on the Fastest Track in the West is one heck of a way to kick off 2013 ! >v
64 cars were registered to drive on the track and well over 100 people came from all over SoCal, Cen Cal, Nor Cal, AZ, NV, TX and MI to attend this event.
I took over 900 pictures, processed and posted over 150 and as always, they are up on my site www.kouchicentral.com (http://www.kouchicentral.com)

The last time we had this many Vipers at WSIR was for our dear friend Dave Cawthorne's Memorial.

You know he was smiling from ear to ear watching the Vipers roar thru and having his Viper Family back at the track.
I can only hope that we are living up to his incredible passion, spirit and love which he had for our Club......
Excellent pictures PCHVIPER, you know looking at some of those Orange County Club members and the amount of winter clothing they are wearing, you'ld would have thought it just snowed at Willows! Hee Hee >w
It was a magical day!
Magical indeed.
Everyone was warned to expect cold mornings, and indeed at 7:00 it was foot stomping cold, however as soon as the sun came out, it warmed up nicely. Even the Palm Springs desert racing group enjoyed the weather.
Those who came out got to enjoy one of those events where lots of hard work under the surface made for a fantastic good time all around.
Everyone was scheduled to get in 6 20 minute sessions. Only one green group session needed to be cancelled due to clean up on the track. The program ran very close to schedule all day, and everybody got lots of track time.
Everybody also had lots of time to mill around, and look at the other prepared cars, as well as to have some great conversations with other Viper owners.
Of course the highlight was when Ralph and Dick drove through the gates, and went right to the pits. They opened up hoods and hatches so everyone could get up close and personal with the Gen V Viper.
With a start of the new year like this, indeed this will be the YEAR OF THE SNAKE!
Good to see you again too, Doc...
Fantastic day for sure! Thanks again to Dan Cragin for all the work he put in to making this a great event. >t
it was great to see so many Vipers turn up for this one. Some people I have not seen in years.... some of you guys need to bring those snakes out of the garage more often. No more garage queens.
Aslo thanks to SRT and Ralph for treating us with 2 new 2013 Vipers at the track. It was great to see Ralph out there giving the full beans to the new GTS, and great to see the Viper lives on. >r
Thank you Dan and Gary from SPT for inviting us out to Willow Springs.
I came out as a spectator and had a great time watching the cars on the track and talking to the people in the pit.
That all changed to the WOW, or better OMG late in the afternoon.
I got a thrill ride from Ralph in the new GTS. What a sight when the rev limiter lights up the dash board, showing Stryker starring at you. It must be great to know what the car can do and even better, to use it at is fullest.
What a nice guy and great driver. That was awesome.
Also thanks for the great BBQ finish off the day.

Doc, those are fantastic pics! Do you mind if I post some of the pics of my car on my FB pages? Can give you attribution?
Also great to see you guys there. Hope to meet more of you at the next event.
Doc II
P.S. Doc I, when Cathy asked for a name for my sidewinders hat I went with my nickname from other activities. Sorry I didn't realize there was already a Doc on the Forum. (Are there two "Docs" with sidewinder hats too? If so maybe I can add a roman numeral 2 on mine.)
