Title: CARAVAN to VOI 11
Post by: NK BREKR on January 12, 2010, 01:25:41 PM
Hey folks,

There is no better time like the present to start planning for VOI 11 in Salt Lake City on September 30th through October 3rd.

It is time to setup some caravans.  Lance, Fast Eddie and I are thinking about leaving Wednesday morning (9/29), spending the night in Vegas and then leaving for Salt Lake City on Thursday (9/30) morning arriving early in the afternoon.  Final details and rendesvouz points are still being discussed and will be posted as date approaches.

Lance has suggested a meeting point that has worked for us during prior visits to Vegas, it is the Chevron located at 12659 Foothill Blvd, Etiwanda, CA 91739 near the Ontario Mills Mall.  You can use the link below to get directions.

http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=12659+Foothill+Blvd,+Etiwanda,+CA+91739&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=34.724817,56.25&ie=UTF8&ll=34.107434,-117.528734&spn=0.008866,0.013733&t=h&z=16&iwloc=addr

Plan is to meet at the Chevron at 10:30 am leave at 11 am and be in Barstow by noon to eat lunch and get gas back on the I-15 to Vegas by 1 pm and roll into Vegas about 3ish (shouldn't hit any traffic).

If you're interested in heading out with us on Wednesday, please post here, so that we can get a good guesstimate of who's joining us:

Art - San Fernando Valley/Santa Clarita
Ben - West LA
David K. - Orange County
Don & Debbie - Rancho Cucamonga
Eddie A. - Orange County
Eddie R. - San Fernando Valley/Santa Clarita
Gary B. - Orange County
Jim & Karen - ?
John B. - Orange County
Lance - Orange County
Matt & Marcela - Vegas
Mike V. - Thousand Oaks
Mike and Cheryl S. - West LA
Mikan & G - San Diego
Nino & Ruth - Yucaipa/Riverside?
Paul & Pam - San Diego
Ron & Nora - San Diego
Scott H - Simi Valley/Thousand Oaks
Scott & Chris P - Upland/Riverside
Tom & Shawn G - Orange County

Hey Art,

It's all yours.

Here is my latest response to Robert.

Dan

Hey Robert,

Room rate and parking sounds good.

Not sure we'll get a $3000 food / drink order at this time.    Last time at Aliante, the Mexican Restaurant set up about 40 seats together for us and this was fine.  We'll have to firm this up later on.

Regards,

Dan

Subject: Vegas stay

OK I have spoken to the Aliante and we can get rooms at $69 a night plus tax and with a $3000 min order on food and drinks we can have the banquet room for free.  I don't know how this compares to the deal the gave you for the zone event but it sound pretty good to me.  They would also secure the front parking lot area for us only with security and stanchions as well as provide secure parking for any trailer rigs.  I went with a 35 car/room assumption with a +/- of 10 cars.  Does all this sound on par with what your plans are?

Robert

Got it Mr. President!

I think Robert was given the amount for Saturday's dinner, not the charge at the Mexican restaurant since that was less than $1K.

I'll email Robert and copy you when relevant.

Add me to the caravan leaving on Sep 29.  Perhaps we could get people to mention from what area they are so we can set up some meeting places.

I'll be the first:
John Bennett - North Orange County (but will drive to Shady Canyon if necessary)

Good idea John.  As more people sign up and provide their location we can setup mini caravans to the big rendesvouz point at the Chevron.

Agree,

"Caranvaning" is always more fun.  Just watching a bunch of Viper driving along any road is fun.

Unfortunately, I'll be towing, which is more comfortable, but not more fun.  Perhaps there will be a few more folks towing this time and we can "caravan" too.

If this works for the group, we can all plan to meet up at the Outlet Mall just before Barstow, regardless of where we all start.

Art,

I'm in too - however; I may transport the car and fly depending on available time - I'll know better as it gets closer to departure time.

Dan - wasn't there talk that VOI was arranging transporters??

Thanks,

Scott,  You can always drive out with us and trailer it back.  Glad you're going to make it.  I read where the club is trying to secure a double digit discount from the transporter, Reliable.

Hey Scott,

Haven't heard about "arranging" transporters yet.  Will know more in a few weeks.  There may be some sort of discount program.

Let's see how the transporter thing works out for a ride back......... or maybe Dan will let me put the car on top of his trailer, I'll split the gas for the ride back?

Dan - I still like the trailer idea, the ACRX would be a rather bumpy ride back, plus there wouldn't be anywhere for Diane to sit?

Lance - if the factory pulls the same stunt as they did on you (delayed delivery) - that might be the case! =17

I'll be caravanning with you Dan.  Looking at the topography of the land from here to Utah, and assuming I havent bought a truck yet, I think the escalade can make it.  Its mostly flat.
Title: Re: CARAVAN to VOI 11
Post by: ViperX on January 14, 2010, 11:24:46 AM
Hey Kobi,

The Escalade should do OK if all is well with it mechanically.  We'll take it easy up Baker Grade into Vegas and up the grade going north out of Vegas.

Just make sure to get the Escalade serviced before your head out.  Oil and filter, cooling system (check the T-stat), trans fluid, check the tires, etc.

Hey Mike,

The hotel we've booked is the Alliante, i.e. the same one that we stayed at for the Western Zone event last year.

It's nice, clean and newer.  Leaving in the morning for Salt Lake City should be easier too as it's on the North end of LV.

On another note...it looks like there may be a split group for the return trip.
Some will leave SLC on Sunday, stop in Vegas and then make the rest of the drive home on Mon.
Others will Leave SLC on Mon, stop in Vegas and then make the rest of the drive home on Tues. This group will likely include a bunch of the other regions that will be making their way home.

I will be leaving SLC on Sunday after all the events.  I stayed in Mesquite a few years ago and I am thinking about doing that on the way back home.  From SLC to Las Vegas is 425 miles, 6hours 36min.  SLC to Mesquite:  340 miles, 5:18.

I am thinking that I will be tired after the Sunday events and would rather drive less that evening.  I have checked Hotwire and there is a 3-star hotel in Mesquite for $41 per night.  Anybody else interested in carvaning on Sunday after the events to Mesquite?

I need to leave early on Monday since I teach a class at Santa Ana College at 7pm on Monday nights.

If it all works out, I'll be bringing two Vipers too, but only one woman.  Like somebody said, can't afford two women!

I'll trailer one and Kid Viper (Drew) will be driving my GTS ..... look out Lance, Drew says he's going to whoop you in the Auto X due to penalty points (can't stop in the box!, etc).

Albert may be Drew's passenger.

THE SAN DIEGO AREA GROUP  ^2  will meet at our usual PARK & RIDE OFF OF I-15 & HWY 76 AT 9AM AND WILL LEAVE PROMPTLY AT 9:15AM in order to hook up with the group forming at the Chevron on Foothilll Blvd.  If you need gas, please arrive earlier than 9 so you have time to get it and join the group so we can leave on time.  Those of you who live North of the Park & Ride, (like Temecula) contact me so we can get a time & place off the I-15 for you to be waiting to join us as we drive on up the highway.  This is going to be a REALLY FUN RIDE!  -  Pam

Let the wagers begin for the venues at VOI ,

AUTO-X:
I will try and compete against the world famous ACR, set-up to perfection by El Presidente himself, with my humble GTS. >1   The battle should be even keeled with Dan's Huge Hoosiers against my Terrific Toyos. The only question is, can I out drive Dan in the Moton-prepped ACR Machine with my glorious 14 year-old stock suspension? With a few pointers from Fast Eddie, I think there is a chance...

KARTING:
Competing against the fiddle-making Flyin-Hawaiian as well as the criminally insane kart-monster, Banzai Ben. Just so everyone knows, it has been rumored that our very own Banzai Ben taught Lewis Hamilton, current championship leader in Formula 1, a thing or two about karting. Additionally, the Everts "Double-D Duo" of Dan and Drew should not be discounted and will pose formidable opponents as we all have witnessed their rabbit-like reflexes at the car control clinic. How many tricks can one pull out of their hat in a given weekend? Hopefully more than one!

So what's the going wager...triple scoop of ice cream in a chocolate-dipped sprinkled cone with unlimited toppings? MMM, sounds good to me...

Who else wants in for this high-stakes, high-octane challenge?

We can compete to see who takes out the most cones  (orange cones, not ice cream cones).

Given Art's affinity for Orange AND experiencing first hand his ability to spin the car seemingly at will, I put him as the likely recipient of the cone killer award! Don't let the club down Art...seek and destroy every cone you see!

Ice Cream sounds good to me - but I'll want mine in a bowl "Rookie"!

I'll try to cut a deal with Drew so that if I block for him (Art and I are both good at this, maybe I'll cut Art in too), and he wins, he shares the spoils.

Also, with Ben's new "lighter" body, he could be the "sleeper" in our group.  Watch out Flyin' Hawaiian .....

Hey guys,  I posted my recent last month experience driving from LA to SLC stopping in Vegas to over night.  Brief summary is the run to Vegas is about 5 hrs from West LA, probably 4 hrs from Ontario Millls Mall.  Road is excellent, AM travel no problem. Weather should be great. Grabbing something to eat at the Mad Greek in Baker is worth it.  Also can get gas there too, tallest outdoor barometer fame.  All parking on the strip and the hotels is free.  No matter what you drive in, there are no parking fees.  Venetian as I remember had a parking terrace that did not bottom out on the vipers.  Saw the Beatles LOVE Cirque de Soleil show at the Mirage, well worth it if you have the time.  The Country Club Grill at the Golf Course at the back of the Wynn Resort next to the Ferrari Dealership, has excellent steaks and superb views, not overly crowded, and no Keno Girls.

Ride to SLC is a different animal.  Spectacular scenery, long stretches of nothingness.  Mesquite is about 90 miles from Vegas.  Last chance for gas until St. George.  We left about around 8:30 made Cedar City around 11:30 AM.  Lots of fast food places in Cedar City.  Choices for dining then drop off dramatically from Cedar City to Lehi, Utah.  You enter the Great Basin National Park and the Capitol Reef Monument areas.  Not much going on except probably no less than 7 UT HWY Patrol, positioned about every 50 or so miles to American Fork, Utah.  Would suggest radar detectors and avoid going more than 75-80 MPH.  Utah Hwy Patrol have at least 2 white Shelby GT Mustang patrol cars working this stretch.  Take a picture of one if you see it for me!  Utah Highway Patrol have less of a sense of humor than their California Hwy Patrol counter parts.  They are generally not a funny group of guys and you can be sure they will be notified that a Viper Convention is coming to SLC.  They hide behind the exit ramps or on top of them.  Ride to SLC seems about twice as long as the ride to Vegas from LA.  Beautiful country, generally not a sole around except on the freeway.  Roads are in good condition.  Can't really remember a bad section.  Be sure to notice all the small white church steeples all over the countryside.

So after about 4.5 hours in the middle of now-where, you then come upon the cities south of Provo, Ut.  The traffic begins to increase dramatically until to get to just south of Provo then you hit traffic worse than West LA at 5 PM. Tremendous boom in housing without concommitent increase in highway access and alternative routes leading to a horrendous traffic stalemate.  But this lasts only about 15-20 miles.  Continue on I-15 for about 25 miles, stop and go traffic until you are over the "Point of the Mountains".  Look to the right as you enter the SLC Valley and see "Widowmaker Hill"  major motorcycle hill climbing track.  Heading north on I-15 is not as bad as heading south, which is completely stopped.  Stay on I-15 all the way into SLC.  Take the 6th South Exit and proceed directly East to Main Street (about 4-5 blocks), take a left and you are at the Grand Hotel, Little America is across the street.  SLC is easy to naviate, streets are set up on a square block plan.  Dining is found all over the city.  Better dining is found on 2nd and 3rd South streets between West Temple and 4th West Streets.

Should be a spectacular weekend baring any rain or snow.  Mormon Church has their semi-annual conference going on at the same time so the city should be pretty crowded.  Miller Motor Speedway is about 25 miles west of the Grand Hotel off of I-80.  I-80 ends at the west end of the Bay Bridge in San Francisco.  To get to I-15 north, take the 5th south freeway entrance to I-15 north.  This is the street on the north side of the Grand Hotel.  Take a left, one way traffic going west and head to the I-15,  stay in the right lanes.  Once entering I-15 you want to take the I-80 Airport exit (I believe exit 308) stay in the right two lanes. This is the first exit off the I-15 after entering it from 5th south.  Stay in the left lanes once you are on I-80 and it is a straight line to the Great Salt Lake.  Go past the south end of the Great Salt Lake and you will see signs directing you to the Milller Motor Sports Park.

There are some scenic drives around Salt Lake City.  The run to Park City is nice, short, about 20 miles on I-80.  Exit on the Park City ramp at the outlet stores.  8 miles into PC.  PC has about 135 restaurants, the No Name Saloon, lots shops.  Lance needs to get a pair of cowboy boots at the Western store on Main Street.

There is also a run up Little Cottonwood Canyon to the Snow Bird Resort.  Spectacular views, it will be cool to cold at these mountain resorts, so bring warm clothing.  Nights will be cool to cold depending on weather fronts.  Generally when the Mormon Church has their semi and annual conferences the weather is excellent in SLC.  But can be snowing the next day leaving SLC.  Rare to have any major weather south of Provo that time of year.

I-15 south in the AM from SLC is not a problem with traffic heading back to So California.

So that is my short summary of the drive.

Have a great time

%l %a %n %c %e   %n %e %e %d %s   %c %o %w %b %o %y    %b %o %o %t %s %!

You will have a great time in PC and SLC.  Don't worry about the liquor laws, they are basically like anywhere else.

Probably close to 4 PM, depends if you have Arturo with you for lunch!  It's about 7 + hours from Vegas to SLC including lunch, unless you are going 90+, then about 6 hrs.

If you are pulling a trailer 6 PM

Hemotox -
How fast were you driving between Las Vegas and L.A. to get those times? I've done the drive many more times than I care to remember between Lv and La Canada and I can tell you that getting to Ontario (or now RC where the 210 and 15 meet) is an easy 3 hours or less without busting it too hard. The Viper can make it all the way (275 miles) so unless you guys want to stretch your legs, you should drive all the way into LV from LA without a stop.

Going up to SLC, I imagine we could go well beyond St George before stopping as it's just about 130 miles from Vegas.

As you said, radar detectors will be a must, but I'm guessing we can get away with 80 to 85 MPH without too much hassle on the way to SLC.
Title: Re: CARAVAN to VOI 11
Post by: hemotox on August 18, 2010, 11:29:38 PM
No problem getting to St. George from Vegas.  Mesquite offers pit stops, restrooms, the Casa Blanca Hotel on the south side of I-80 has excellent frozen yogurt.  Excellent drive in the Virgin River Canyon, all in Arizona and the only way for Az HwyP to get to the canyon is through Nevada.  So generally safe to pick up the pace.  Fantastic views in this canyon.  As you come out of the canyon, it is up hill, and Utah HP tend to rest on the island between the freeways with radar, just past the "Welcome to Utah" sign.

As for speed, I was around 80, sometime around 85, but also had a radar detector, which went off frequently.  The patrol is out there, the distances are for the most part flat, but between Beaver and Scipio, it is hilly and the highway patrol sit off the side of the road or near overpasses, or around the sweeping curves on the freeway.  If you don't have a radar detector, don't worry about it, just don't go about 85 MPH, you should be fine.  But as I indicated above, they will know about the Viper convention coming to SLC, and will be out there.  Look for the White Shelby GT with silver stripes, and the lights on top.  After leaving Cedar City, the landscape changes dramatically from the desert of Nevada and So Utah to unending stretches of grasslands and rolling hills, quite spectacular.

If you get a ticket, not a big deal unless you are way over the speed limit.

4 hours from Ontario included lunch at the Mad Greek, so 3 hrs is right if you don't stop.

Just a general question: do you guys use the little Motorola two-way radios on your club cruises? They work pretty well for a caravan to avoid cops. Everyone tunes to the same freq and that way anyone getting a radar hit (especially those at the front or the back of the line) announce it to the group so everyone can slow down.

The range and clarity is far better than the Motorolas.   Either way, if you bring what you got and we'll choose a channel that works for everyone.
