I think we need to also thank Richard Palkovic.  What a great idea to take Hwy 6 > Benton > Hwy 120 to Hwy 395.  Incredible road.  Best driving ever.

Grazie Mille, Ricardo!

Hank Otten was such a gracious host at the Copper Top BBQ, and was so happy we posted the vipers around the corner of his restaurant, I decided to create a 2'x3' poster comemorating the event.  I will deliver it in 3 weeks time whilst on the So Cal MINI Maniacs "Devil's Backbone V" Run to Bishop > Lake Tahoe > Mammoth Lakes.  Will also get it framed.

For those of the club who were not able to come on this run, you missed incredible scenery, mountain twisties, spectacular High Sierra vistas, incredible long straight empty roads, high speed driving, a series of the largest rollers one could imagine, great camaraderie, superb food, great entertainment, and a fantastic time ending in Mammoth Lakes.  There hopefully will be a next year repeat and perhaps an annual summer event.

We should probably move up the arrive and depart time at the Denny's in Sylmar to 7:00 AM, leaving at 8:15 if we are going to meet Mr. Fangs et al. at Pearsonville at 10:30 AM.

So arrive Denny between 7:00 - 7:30, and leave Dennys at 8:15.  Come early if you are planning on breakfast at Denny's.

I don't believe I need to make more than two Captain and Tennille Greatest Hits CDs, Right?  One for Mr. Fang's viper and the other for his daily driver, nes't pas?

Potential plans for next weekend.

Friday Day August 22
Meet at Sylmar or Hwy 138 - I-15 junction (San Diego Vipers).  Rendezvous at Pearsonville Shell Station with San Diego Vipers ~ 10:30 AM Hwy 395.  Easy drive up Hwy 395 stopping in Guz' Beef Jerky in Olanche, Lone Pine, consider lunch in Lone Pine (Alabama Cafe), or option to drive up to the Whitney Portal. 2nd lunch option is BBQ lunch road side in north end of Big Pine at the Copper Top drive-inn (incredible BBQ)!  Possible stop at Manzanar Memorial Concentration Camp, south of Fort Independence.  Arrive in Bishop ~ 3PM check-in.

Friday night Creekside Inn Bishop.
There is a patio at the Creekside Inn north side facing the creek. We can have a club reception 4-6 PM.  Excellent Japaneese restaurant 2 doors south of Creekside, Yamatani, which would be good for dinner.  There is also a BBQ restaurant across from the Creekside on Hwy 395.  Paiute Sierra Casino is about 3 miles around the bend north of the Creekside if you are so inclined.

Saturday Eastern Sierra
Leave Bishop post breakfast 9:30 AM.  Take Highway 395 north past Mammoth and June Lakes.  Meet at Junction of Hwy 120 (Tioga Pass) at Whoa Nellie Deli Mobile Station to get gas, home made sandwiches, ice, drinks.  Head up Tioga Pass to Tioga Lake look out reception area.  There are pic nic tables and restrooms at the Tioga lookout.  Lunch in the High Sierras. If one wanted to go into Yosemite Park or consider crossing the park that is possible. $20 / car.  I have done that before, speed limit in park greatly reduced but if you haven't seen it, it may be worth consideration.  It will take a long time in and out of the park, traffic is busy and slow.  If you go to the park, you will miss Mammoth Lakes in the afternoon.  After Tioga Lake, return to Mammoth Lakes along Hwy 395 south.  Optional Cruise around June lake is possible and the scenic drive into Mammoth is also great.

Saturday Night Mammoth Lakes
Check into Alpenhof in the afternoon.  Gondola will be running at Main resort (2  miles up Mineret Road), if you want to go ot the top of the Sierras and see Yosemite from the East.  There is a nice parking lot at the Alpenhof, I am sure we can get Joel, (OriginalRoot), to host a small cocktail party. Happy hour at Lakanuki Bar and Restaurant in the Main Village, 4-6 PM, just across Mineret Road from the Alpenhof.  Those who want more entertainment, 50 yards from Lakanuki restaurant is the Side Door Wine Bar and Restaurant, Main Village across from village gondola.  A most excellent place and they are expecting Viper owners to drop by!  There is also a wine and food tasting event at the main village gondola area Saturday Afternoon and evening.

Mr. Fangs, I am working on your C&T disc. :-)

Very important that So Cal viper members coming on this run obtain a walkie talkie radio.  Any brand will do.  Standard radios have 22 Channels and 121 sub Channels.  We can potentially have long distances between vipers and the walkie talkie is fast, easy to use, requires no phone call and is not distractive to road concentration.

Motorola makes probably the best walkie talkie radio.  Below is a web site that you can order a set from with a rapid shipping.

http://www.buytwowayradios.com/Products/Motorola/Motorola-Two-Way-Radios.aspx

Motorola models MR350+ are good radios.  We will use channel 7, sub channel 21.  These radios are used to notify members on the run of road conditions, on coming traffic, notification of Highway Patrol radar sensing, communication between drivers, and notification of change in plans while on the road.

It is a good idea to have a couple of these in your Viper.  Battery power tends to last all day, can be recharged at night.  Higher end models have usb connections so they can be charged in your car.

if you don't have a radio, order today and it will be here for next Friday.  You can also go to a local radio store and see what is available.

"The Wrath of Hemotox" ?  Sounds horrendous!  It is more great depression that PCHVIPER, in all it's new found glory won't be stretching its legs on Hwy 395.  I have had plenty of excuses for not being able to make a run, but college move-in day for daughter is near the top of acceptable ones.

We will miss our Hawai'ian brother both days and the drive up and back.  Next year we shedule it in Mid June  :D
