Title: NARRA / VIPER DAYS at Buttonwillow Raceway February 20 - 22
Post by: ViperX on December 01, 2008, 11:19:47 AM
Hey Gang,

Viper Days (North American Road Racing Association) returns to California at Buttonwillow Raceway Park with a test and tune day on Friday, Feb 20 and Driving School activities held on Saturday and Sunday, Feb 21 and Feb 22.

This is the only scheduled stop in California for 2009, so don't miss it!

Track side support is provided by Archer Racing.  The are one of the best places to get your Viper properly aligned.  They can also do routine maintenance and repairs at the track if you don't get your oil or other fluids changed in time by one of our local vendors or have an issue at the track.

Call John Archer for more information or a service appointment at:  218-727-4806

Dan  <2

HOST HOTEL:

Four Points by Sheraton Bakersfield (http://www.starwoodhotels.com/fourpoints/property/overview/index.html?propertyID=822)
5101 California Avenue • Bakersfield, California 93309 • United States
Phone: (661) 325-9700 call and refer to NARRA/Viper Days to get the group rate of $80 per night.

Dan and I will be checking in on Thursday.  Dan will be running "test and tune" on Friday.  FYI: The "funnest" way to do this is plan to arrive at the track on Friday...by 3PM would be great, meet up with us, get your car tech'd, etc.  We'll then we'll go back to the hotel, check in, and go to dinner...

If that doesn't work out and you arrive directly at the hotel on Friday evening, that would be OK too, you can check in with NARRA registration, then time permitting, go to dinner with us.  Keep in mind, however, it will be quite hectic when getting your car tech'd on Saturday morning.

The plan...

=21 Arrive on Friday – head home on Sunday evening.

=15 Plan to run/drive all day Saturday & Sunday – you'll get 4 sessions on the track each day with classroom and in-car instruction.  We'll have a garage to hang out in stocked with goodies to munch and friends to share driving stories with.

=22 Wear comfy clothes, but you must drive in a helmet, long pants, a long sleeve shirt (preferably cotton) closed toed shoes, and driving gloves are recommended.

<t FRIDAY: Registration:  If you didn't check in at the track on Friday, you'll register for the event Friday evening at the hotel.

=19  FRIDAY Evening:  Join us for dinner at El Torito, ½ mile from the hotel at 7PM

=20 SATURDAY Evening: NARRA dinner banquet style, dress is business casual

Hey Guys,

Here's the contact info for the new General manger of Viper Days:

Kevin's Contact info is [email protected] or the office number is 866-736-2805.

You can call Kevin directly for more info or to sign up.

Also good news, they have LOWERED the entry fees for the Challenge Series (basic Viper Days run groups).

As always, there will be a reception on Friday night and a dinner on Saturday night.

We've already rented a garage for our group and will bring drinks and snacks.

Hope to see everyone there.

Hey Lance,

It will at least be you, me, Cathy and OGO.

Watch out for Cathy, she'll be running in your group.  She should be fast.  I just added some power to the white car by removing the crossover exhaust system ..... and Archer corner-weighted and aligned it.  She'll be running Kumhos on SSR's.  Car now should weigh only 3300 lbs at track time.

I'll be running in my new, slow ACR so I should'nt be a factor.

I just signed up too!!

Ruth (in charge of registration) said that the NARRA recommmends that everyone stay at the Four Points by Sheraton Bakersfield.  If you mention the NARRA group discount, you can get a room for $80 / night!
The banquet is going to be held here as well as friday registration in the lobby.

You can call the Sheraton at (661) 325-9700.

Or as recommended above by OGO, you can stay at the Red Roof Inn which is a little closer to the track and a few dollars less.

Looking forward to some more direction and fun in the sun.
Lance, I'll take 3rd now...

The banquet is at the Four Points Sheraton, where it usually is held.  Walking to your room after the banquet = priceless.

We just reserved our room too.

I'd recommend everyone who can stay there.

Drive to the track isn't too bad.

Glad to hear from Kobi again.

Art, you need to make this one ..... so does fast Eddie and Kala.

Kala's got a ride with Mike Greenberg in his comp coupe.  Know she'll get a kick out of that!

Who wants to cruise up together on Friday ?

I'm thinking about meeting at Spaghettini's in Seal Beach around 10:00  and leave by 10:15
Take the 5 on up to Roxford in Sylmar.  We should be there around 11:00.
Take the 5  north to McKittrick Hwy and stop off for gas and lunch.
We'll have plenty of time to get to the track and get signed in and have the cars tech'd.

Let me know who is coming with me.    >v

Hey Ben and others,

Just got the news that Angen's, Rocky and Terri, will be doing their Annual Brian Angen test and tune day on Friday, $300 for the day.

I'll be running this since I've never run Buttonwillow's track config #25.

You may be able to get a 1/2 day in if you'd like.  1/2 day would likely start at 1:00 PM and be about 1/2 price.

Contact Terri Angen for more info at: [email protected]

#25 looked like it could have been fun.....

I requested clockwise for our group as I believe it to be safer ..... and we'll have a few "first timers" at this event.

Hopefully, clockwise will be the direction.  13 is a good configuration.

Dan, you're going to have to practice counterclockwise one of these days!
CCW is awesome, especially entering the bus stop from Talladega.  CCW is a better direction, oh well.

Meet us in Sylmar on Friday.

Hey Jonathan,

Last time I was at BW with NASA, they ran CW on Saturday and CCW on Sunday.

I actually don't mind CCW but do prefer CW.  I watched the race qualifying sessions and races on Saturday and Sunday. A bunch of drivers went off at the end of the Esses on Sunday; they couldn't make that turn.

Nobody hit the chain link fence that day, but I've seen many guys go off in the Esses (CCW) due to too much speed (for their ability) or hitting a candy striped berm too fast, upsetting the car and spinning off track.

Hope you can make Viper Days.

Pretty Cool Kala !
Doesn't look like something that would be done in 3 or 4 weeks though.

I would think that you would be able to handle Viper Days no problem.
Honestly, all you need to do is shift from 1st to 2nd and then into 3rd and you are done.  I've run Buttonwillow in 3rd gear the entire lap with no issues at all.  The Viper has plenty of torque and speed in 3rd gear and it matches well with this track.

I'm sure your knee is strong enough to do that shift sequence twice in the morning and twice in the afternoon.
You can rest your knee in the classroom between sessions.

The tentative plan right now is to leave Spaghettini's around 10:00.
This should put us in Sylmar by 11:00.  We will meet up with the LA guys at the Denny's off the 5 fwy and Roxford.
From there we will head into Bakersfield, grab lunch and be at the track in time to get checked in and have the cars tech'd.

I'll firm this up once I'm sure everyone who wants to caravan with us can be there at these times.

See ya!

You guys that need wheels should snap these Forgelines up.

Hey Art and Lance,

Cathy and Drew will be driving my GTS at Viper Days in the Green Group.  Good luck with Drew .....

Running the new ACR at Willow Springs this weekend with Michael VonQuilich at a Speed Ventures event.  Should be fun.  Goal for WS this year is under 1:30.  Goal at BW is under 2:00.  Got real close last year to both times.  New ACR should make the difference.

Hey Art,

Yeah, we're running Race 13 clockwise as I understand it.  No Star Mazda and no "extension" at the other end of the track.

This is a very good configuration.  It's actually safer this way IMHO and a bit faster too.  Though I like Star Mazda, that extension can unsettle the car (not sure why we ran it last year).

The "sweeper" that we are running instead of Star Mazda puts you right into the "Esses".  Be careful here as you enter the Esses as that first berm can be slippery if you approach it too fast or at the wrong angle.  I just line the car up and drive right on top of it.

Dan, I was looking at the configuration and noticed exactly what you mentioned, seems like coming out of Star Mazda you have additional time to line the car up as you head into the Esses.

I loved going into Star Mazda last year, since it was fast, I was able to catch one of my 'over steering' episodes and recovered nicely, too bad Lance didn't take a picture of that, only the Sunset spin. >u

One more important bit of information for everyone coming to this event.

If you haven't had time to get your maintenance or routine track prep done at one of our local vendors, Archer Racing will be at the track and can do this for you.  They can do oil and other fluid changes along with alignments, Corsa installs, clutch changes, brakes, tires, engine changes, etc. etc.  They can do almost anything and all at a very fair price.

Call John Archer for more info at: 218-727-4806

See you at the track,

Dan  <2

I will see you there, I will be driving up Friday evening, should be there for dinner friday night, I will not make it to drive up with Lance and the gang earlier, sounds like that will be fun...

Cathy, I am assuming you called Ruth at Narra, I have been assigned as your instructor for the weekend.
I am looking forward to it, we will have fun.

See ya this weekend,
Ray McIntyre

Anyone interested in Dr. J's custom travelling CDs with approximately 6 hours of Wolfman Jack shows for the 08 -09 vipers with MP3 capacity CD players, let me know.  I can also make single shows 1-2 hours in length, for the older Generation I-III CD players.  Great traveling music and the Wolfman takes you back to American Grafitti in your viper traveling up the 5 through the grapevine !!!!

I'd like to get one of those cd's from you. My Gen 2 will play MP3's.

Remind me to give you a '08 DVD too.

Sorry, no Hula girls for ButtonWillow.  Too distracting !!

Lance,

Looks like the "Eddies" were traded this year, "Slow" Eddie will be in Miami, and Eddie R will be searching for a nickname.  Glad you're able to make it out Eddie.

How about Hemotox, he's on this thread quite a bit that he might as well join the 12+ Viper caravan on Friday.  What do ya say Doc?

Where's Mr. Speed Tactics? >m

caravan would be great, I am suppose to be in skiing in Deer Valley this coming weekend.

Can you imagine me behind PCH VIPER taking enormous boulders spun off his rear tires pelting the pristine SSGreen surface of my hood and front end?  NOT!!!

To many rocks and debris on the track for old Dr J, and remember I take care of the unfortunate ones that make the wrong decisions and end up in my place of work.

I'll chase OGO around the back roads of San Diego County, anytime !

After driving at more than 30 weekend track events in the last 3+ years, I can tell you all that you'll get more rock chips on the San Diego backroad or Malibu Canyon runs behind a bunch of Vipers than you will driving the track at Buttonwillow, and at Buttonwillow, there isn't a car driving the other direction, your direction, just a few feet from you.

Willow Springs is a different matter and for that track, you'll want clear bra or blue tape in the intermediate and advanced groups.  Beginner group is still pretty good as far as rock chips go.

As for those unfortunate ones, driving at Buttonwillow in a driving school or lapping environment is much safer than driving on our local roads - by a long shot.

If is wasn't ski season and Mammoth had not received 30 " of snow and Deer Valley 11' inches would probably be there.  But I am sending in my place, Wolfman Jack who will be sending out his radio show to several of our Viper club members.  OGO's CDs are going to PCH VIPER for personal delivery.  Ski season rules my life.

Great pictures. I  like the one of car #3 waving to the camera coming out of the sweeper at 65 mph !!!

So are you going to buy the 200-400 or go for the 600?  If you get the 600, I'll help you carry it so you don't strain your back.

 ^8 ^8 I'm happy renting Sigmund for now  ^8 ^8

Did you notice how almost every shot has a toilet in it? I had to do some serious cropping so the porta potty didn't become the star of the day...

Buttonwillow, sure could use some help in the landscaping department... butt ugly   <C

I really could have used a 600 though... Especially if it was fast glass like the 200-400 was. On a brighter day a 2X would be great with Sigmund  >u

Congrats to Lance and Scott for taking home some hardware.  And to Rev for having a lap time under 2 minutes, way to drive man.

Michael Burgoyne was scary fast! He won Super Mod easily, and was within one second of the fastest modified ACR. He has improved massively, and I would say, car for car, was the fastest guy on the track in the non-race divisions.

Incredible!

Michael is a maniac  =15 GOTTA LOVE THAT SMILEY, REMINDS ME OF MIKE! LOL

But seriously, I appreciated being able to go for the ride... It was really amazing, how fast that car launches and how quickly it can stop... It was the ride of my life, and we were about 6 seconds off race lap times...

Hopefully the camera I had mounted will give us back the DVD that got stuck in there. I'd love to put that video up for everyone to see... There may even be footage of the ACR spinning out in front of the coupe. It was right after that event I noticed that the camera was black screened and blinking DVD error...

If you ever get to go for a comp coupe ride... take ear plugs.. During the ride, my left ear started having really sharp pains. My ears are still ringing...  >1

Hey Dr J
Everyone got their discs.  I listened to Wolfman all the way home.  I woke up Sunday morning not feeling so great.
Left the track early to beat the rain and it was a good thing too.  About halfway home I was really starting to feel crappy.  I set the cruise control and turned up the Wolfman to help keep me awake.

Lance,

You have to learn not to eat fast food with OGO, even though he is the king of the fast food burritos, some good solid food with ruffage would elmiminate those post OGO dietary feelings!  Glad the Wolfman Saved the day.  I was doing the same thing back from Mammoth on Saturday afternoon, had him cranked up in the DenaliXL, cruising down 395 through Bishop, Big Pine, Independence, Lone Pine, Mojave.  Most excellent cruising music.
