Joel Larson, (OriginalRoot), and I just got back from a two day run up the Eastern Sierras with a small group of intense MINI Cooper car guys, and we had a fantastic time. We are planning a two day run for the So Cal Viper Club Members, August 22-24, along Hwy 395. This is one of the premier driving roads in California. No traffic, open roads, incredible vistas, and returning home is very easy and a reverse view of the incredible landscape. We would hope that as many club members as possible would be interested in attending this club event.
Day 1 Destination Bishop, California August 22
The map is attached for everyone to see. The plan is to meet up at the Denny's on Roxford off the I-5 in Sylmar, around 7:30 AM on Friday August 22. Breakfast is available at Denny's and there is a Chevron Gas Station on the parking lot. Our plan is to leave Roxford at 9:00 AM, take I-5 to Hwy 14, north to 395. This is a leisurely run with incredible vistas and multiple stops along the way. There are options for lunch in Lone Pine, or the excellent outdoor Copper Top BBQ in Big Pine. It is approximately 220 miles from Sylmar to Bishop. We check into the Creekside Inn in Bishop in the afternoon with post check-in socializing and drinks. Restaurants are very close to the hotel, including a bowling alley, and a Paiute Casino in town. Great sushi, Indian, BBQ, and Mexican restaurants within walking distance.
Day 2 Destination the High Sierra, Tiioga Pass and Mammoth Lakes. August 23
Leaving Bishop in the morning after breakfast, we drive up the 395 as it elevates to the High Sierra landscape. We will cruise to Tioga Pass Hwy 120 and stop at the Whoa Nellie Deli. This is a Mobile gas station with an excellent sandwich facility, drinks, ice, restrooms etc. Once loaded up, we will head up Tioga pass to the summit of the Sierra Crest road and rendezvous at Tioga Lake. This is a pristine alpine lake with a turnout facility, picnic tables, restrooms and a commanding view of Tioga Lake. The mountains are spectacular at this vista point.
We then return along the high Eastern Sierra 395, with an alternative cruise around June Lake and Mountain, and then back on Hwy 395 to Mammoth Lakes Village. Check into the hotels. The Alpenhof hotel is the preferred hotel and is directly across from the Mammoth Lakes Village. Optional gondola rides will be running to the top of Mammoth Mountain with incredible views into Yosemite Park. Multiple restaurants are within walking distance. A group final night social event will be planned for this evening.
Accommodations are listed as follows below

8) Hi Kids, I recently went with the Doc and his MINI club friends on this run, I've got to admit ...We all had a FABULOUS time, I was Very careful when I got on the GAS "NOT" to Suck One UP !
roads were clean, weather was Perfect with Staggering Views, I liked our stop in Lone Pine, if you looked up the street ... Mt Whitney, that's One Big Rock ! Since the Doc is an Avid skier he knows that road like the back of his hand, We all had walkie-Talkies so He would "Tour Guide" with Cool bits of commentary along the way, Copper Top BBQ was Fabulous.
Ssoo, get your reservations Now & start making plans ... Block the dates NOW, that's what I DO,
then you won't get rushed later, I guarantee Big Fun

This is somewhat individual, some people want to get back, and others less stressful and prefer a longer return.
Forgot to post ;D
My reservations are made too.
San Diego viper club members should take I-15 to the 395 and we can meet them in Pearsonville, 5 miles north of the 395-14 junction. There is a Shell station there we will arrange to meet at. Do not try to drive across LA to meet us in Sylmar.
Reports coming in that Creekside is already full.
Please make reservations NOW!
La Quinta is next door to the Creekside. Make ASAP they will also sell out

Professor Paul, I don't see the Trebolets on the list? Hmmm.... Guess they are getting too old to run up the Sierras? ;D
From Budapest
Finally a day OFF ! workin on reservations Today !
Okay if you are coming on this run and have a preference for driving music list it below.
Options are
1. Early Eagles
2. Eagles Live
3. Accoustic ballads
4. Rock and Roll
5. Wolfman Jack
I will furnish appropriate CDs for the viper run.
Any chance for some Captain & Tenille?
Otherwise Eagles work for us.
Eagles on the left side of the car, and Jack Johnson on the right. Is that possible?
Captain and Tenille, now that is a request I never through I would get. 8) Not sure I can actually put them on my music server. Daughters would not understand the urge to purchase C&T songs. If Original Root found out that I put C&T on the CDs instead of the ""Grass Roots", would be a major issue.
I can offer some America and Mamas and Papas. I'll have to think about that one a little longer.
New Clutch & Flywheel, Brake Pads, Re-Surfaced Rotors & New Michelin's all Around !
I think I'm Ready for a Roadtrip ;)

: >)
::)
Okay viperettes:
Here are the CD choices.
1. Early Eagles
2. Live Eagles Concert
3. Rock Ballads
4. Acoustic Ballads
5. ROCK & ROLL
Captain and Tenielle = 1 Mr. Fangs
Post what you want so I don't make too many of the same traveling CDs
Hemotox
Maybe we can switch between each other at fuel stops.
Even I can not take too much Capt'n & Tenielle.
Reservations made at the preferred hotels. Got the day off on Friday. So we're in and looking forward to a fun weekend!
We will be driving up the 15 Fwy and will meet the group in Pearsonville at the Shell station. Eric or Joel, having made this trip previously, do you have an idea what time you will arrive in Pearsonville?
If any of the San Diego club members want to rendezvous in Rancho Cucamonga at the Chevron station off the I-15 at Foothill Blvd. (our normal meet point), we will meet you there.
Dan & Mayo
Dan.
Great idea.
We can set up a time to meet you guys, and cruise up together.
Paul & Teresa.
I would anticipate between 10-10:30 at the Shell Station in Pearsonville.
From Moscow
Hemotox
I really hate to bear the wrath of the Hemotox for missing this, but unfortunately I will not be able to make this run :'( :'(
Saturday is move in day at CSULB and we can't get out of it. Have fun everyone !!
:-\ That's NOT good news Lance ..... You Will be Missed !
"The Wrath of Hemotox" ? Sounds horrendous! It is more great depression that PCHVIPER, in all it's new found glory won't be stretching its legs on Hwy 395. I have had plenty of excuses for not being able to make a run, but college move-in day for daughter is near the top of acceptable ones.
We will miss our Hawai'ian brother both days and the drive up and back. Next year we shedule it in Mid June :D
Very important that So Cal viper members coming on this run obtain a walkie talkie radio. Any brand will do. Standard radios have 22 Channels and 121 sub Channels. We can potentially have long distances between vipers and the walkie talkie is fast, easy to use, requires no phone call and is not distractive to road concentration.
Motorola makes probably the best walkie talkie radio. Below is a web site that you can order a set from with a rapid shipping.
http://www.buytwowayradios.com/Products/Motorola/Motorola-Two-Way-Radios.aspx (http://www.buytwowayradios.com/Products/Motorola/Motorola-Two-Way-Radios.aspx)
Motorola models MR350+ are good radios. We will use channel 7, sub channel 21. These radios are used to notify members on the run of road conditions, on coming traffic, notification of Highway Patrol radar sensing, communication between drivers, and notification of change in plans while on the road.
It is a good idea to have a couple of these in your Viper. Battery power tends to last all day, can be recharged at night. Higher end models have usb connections so they can be charged in your car.
if you don't have a radio, order today and it will be here for next Friday. You can also go to a local radio store and see what is available.
Potential plans for next weekend.
Friday Day August 22
Meet at Sylmar or Hwy 138 - I-15 junction (San Diego Vipers). Rendezvous at Pearsonville Shell Station with San Diego Vipers ~ 10:30 AM Hwy 395. Easy drive up Hwy 395 stopping in Guz' Beef Jerky in Olanche, Lone Pine, consider lunch in Lone Pine (Alabama Cafe), or option to drive up to the Whitney Portal. 2nd lunch option is BBQ lunch road side in north end of Big Pine at the Copper Top drive-inn (incredible BBQ)! Possible stop at Manzanar Memorial Concentration Camp, south of Fort Independence. Arrive in Bishop ~ 3PM check-in.
Friday night Creekside Inn Bishop.
There is a patio at the Creekside Inn north side facing the creek. We can have a club reception 4-6 PM. Excellent Japaneese restaurant 2 doors south of Creekside, Yamatani, which would be good for dinner. There is also a BBQ restaurant across from the Creekside on Hwy 395. Paiute Sierra Casino is about 3 miles around the bend north of the Creekside if you are so inclined.
http://yamatanibishop.com/ (http://yamatanibishop.com/)
Saturday Eastern Sierra
Leave Bishop post breakfast 9:30 AM. Take Highway 395 north past Mammoth and June Lakes. Meet at Junction of Hwy 120 (Tioga Pass) at Whoa Nellie Deli Mobile Station to get gas, home made sandwiches, ice, drinks. Head up Tioga Pass to Tioga Lake look out reception area. There are pic nic tables and restrooms at the Tioga lookout. Lunch in the High Sierras. If one wanted to go into Yosemite Park or consider crossing the park that is possible. $20 / car. I have done that before, speed limit in park greatly reduced but if you haven't seen it, it may be worth consideration. It will take a long time in and out of the park, traffic is busy and slow. If you go to the park, you will miss Mammoth Lakes in the afternoon. After Tioga Lake, return to Mammoth Lakes along Hwy 395 south. Optional Cruise around June lake is possible and the scenic drive into Mammoth is also great.
Saturday Night Mammoth Lakes
Check into Alpenhof in the afternoon. Gondola will be running at Main resort (2 miles up Mineret Road), if you want to go ot the top of the Sierras and see Yosemite from the East. There is a nice parking lot at the Alpenhof, I am sure we can get Joel, (OriginalRoot), to host a small cocktail party. Happy hour at Lakanuki Bar and Restaurant in the Main Village, 4-6 PM, just across Mineret Road from the Alpenhof. Those who want more entertainment, 50 yards from Lakanuki restaurant is the Side Door Wine Bar and Restaurant, Main Village across from village gondola. A most excellent place and they are expecting Viper owners to drop by! There is also a wine and food tasting event at the main village gondola area Saturday Afternoon and evening.
Mr. Fangs, I am working on your C&T disc. :-)
Just Ordered my Radios, $100 with 2 day shipping, EASY ! This is going to be a BLAST !
I'm probably going to receive some of that "Wrath" also ... I can't leave till NOON !
Sooo if you guys Stop for Pictures a Few times and Lunch, I should catch the group before
you get to Bishop.... It may change ! I'll keep you Posted
Costco has some family radio's in their stores for those who do not wish to order on line. The ones in San Diego were Motorola and pretty nice. Think around $70 for 2.
Eric. Please post the group's traveling frequency. Believe our usual frequency is 10-10.
The San Diego group will be meeting at 7:00 am at the I-15 and 76 Park n' Ride. Plan to arrive a little early for a 7:00 departure.
Will see everybody in Pearsonville : >)
My cell is 858 472-9388 if anyone need to contact us on the way up.
Paul
I'm so confused! :o 7/21 or 10/10 or ready set Hike Hike Hike :P
Well since this is a new run, and a So Cal VIper run:
Channel 10 sub channel 10 is fine
No confusion 10-10 is frequency.
Sorry I won't be able to attend due to work schedule change. Enjoy the trip guys.
Demoe
Jim and Judy "Snake" won't be able to make it. :(
I don't believe I need to make more than two Captain and Tennille Greatest Hits CDs, Right? One for Mr. Fang's viper and the other for his daily driver, nes't pas?
;D
Only one C&T needed.
My Viper IS my daily driver : >)
My other car's CD player is reserved for only DISCO!
Lookin' forward to this trip. Livin' the Travolta life.
See everybody in the valley paradise of Pearsonville.
Paul
We should probably move up the arrive and depart time at the Denny's in Sylmar to 7:00 AM, leaving at 8:15 if we are going to meet Mr. Fangs et al. at Pearsonville at 10:30 AM.
So arrive Denny between 7:00 - 7:30, and leave Dennys at 8:15. Come early if you are planning on breakfast at Denny's.

And a Bikini!
Congrats on the S.G. Gen 5 !!!!!!!!
It is awesome !
For those of the club who were not able to come on this run, you missed incredible scenery, mountain twisties, spectacular High Sierra vistas, incredible long straight empty roads, high speed driving, a series of the largest rollers one could imagine, great camaraderie, superb food, great entertainment, and a fantastic time ending in Mammoth Lakes. There hopefully will be a next year repeat and perhaps an annual summer event.

A big Thank You to Eric and Joel for setting up the event. Non stop fun. We have to set this up again for next year. Here are a few more pics to add to the collection.
Eric and Joel deserve all the thanks in the World for putting together this fantastic 3 day tour of the Eastern Sierra mountains and Mammoth Lakes region.
These were some of the most senic and driver engaging roads available most anywhere.
With little traffic, and a huge variety of roads, there was something for everyone.
Having these two guys along who were always eager to share their local knowledge, got us into some of the most pleasurable driving venues available.
The weather was perfect. Warm and sunny in the lower elevations, and cool and sunny at the mountain tops.
In addition to the great riding venues, we were able to enjoy free live concerts, fantastic and reasonably priced food, huge wine, cocktails and beer selections. At every stop everyone got the chance to converse with the other people along for the cruise.
Every evening found pods of people gathering together at the overnights to enjoy a few drinks (OK, more than a few) some great food, and wonderful ambience.
With my Viper now having been ridden hard, and put away wet, I have the chance to re-gather my thoughts and realize just how much fun and memories have been achieved in just a long weekend with some Viper buddies.
Gota do more of these...
WoW ! :) It was the MOST Fun, All of the "Victims" of this Run ALL said, Hey let's make this
an annual event ! I Say "Let's DO IT" ... We may have to ADD an extra day... You know the DOC
gets a little Tired... Need's a LONGER NAP !
What a FUN BUNCH !
I Thank everyone for joining us on this trip, I promise to bring My Best Friend, My Wife "The lovely & talented" Madona next time

Looks like you all had a GREAT time !
Ben and I were busy at a college dorm party ;D
Hank Otten was such a gracious host at the Copper Top BBQ, and was so happy we posted the vipers around the corner of his restaurant, I decided to create a 2'x3' poster comemorating the event. I will deliver it in 3 weeks time whilst on the So Cal MINI Maniacs "Devil's Backbone V" Run to Bishop > Lake Tahoe > Mammoth Lakes. Will also get it framed.

I think we need to also thank Richard Palkovic. What a great idea to take Hwy 6 > Benton > Hwy 120 to Hwy 395. Incredible road. Best driving ever.
Grazie Mille, Ricardo!
I also noticed that in the poster you will see Viper Copperheads at both bookends!
Hank puts out some mean Barbecue...
Serendipity :)
Also wanted to thank Eric for making all those Road Tunes CD's for everyone.
Teresa and I had a great time rockin' out to Muscrat Love by Capt'n & Tennile : >)
Was a fantastic road trip that allowed everyone to "air out" their Vipers. There are fewer and fewer places where high performance cars can be used as intended. Lots of smiles on lots of faces.
Ha ha
To bad we don't have that duet on video! :-)
Some of the best fun and Viper driving! Great food places to eat at (I even ordered a VIPER ROLL for dinner in Mammoth) and the roller coaster style highway where we all opened it up was great fun. Everyone seemed to be having a fantastic time. Paul & Pam
Okay Eastern Sierra Viper participants. I made this for Hank Otten at the Copper Top BBQ in Big Pine. Delivered it on Thursday, OrignalRoot swore he was coming on this 3-day run over last weekend and bagged the run again the night before, (so I am officially not talking to him), So Cal MINI Maniacs did a 3 day run up the Eastern Sierra, 1st night Bishop, 2nd night Lake Tahoe with river boat dinner cruise, 3rd night Mammoth Lakes. This is the framed picture of our viper visit to Copper Top and was delivered by hand to Hank.
