CAR CONTROL CLINIC at Auto Club Speedway - October 4, 2008
THIS EVENT IS RAIN OR SHINE <Z
Do you ever feel like taking your Viper out into an empty parking lot and doing some donuts just for fun?
Wouldn't you love to go out and burn some rubber and not get a ticket?
Have you ever wanted to take some turns on the street fast enough to slide the car and exceed its limits, without the chance of hitting something or someone?
Wwould you like to explore your Viper's limits in a safe, legal environment and learn to handle your beast better?
If you answered yes to any of the above questions, our first annual Viper Club Car Control Clinic is something you just won't want to miss.
The date is October 4, 2008 at Auto Club Speedway off Cherry Avenue and the I-10 Freeway in Fontana. We have rented a large parking lot approximately 1000 x 1200 feet. The club will provide lunch.
DC Performance will be there to help with the event and offer minor services to all the attendees.
Bob Blizzard, Viper Days' Chief Driving Instructor, and a host of other experienced drivers will be there to provide instruction.
We'll have four stations as follows:
STATION #1 - Is a figure 8 around cones where Bob rides with and instructs each driver and offers input / advice on how the car feels, what the car is doing and how to best control it while turning left and right. I know this will be a long day for Bob but he should have some fun too.
STATION #2 - Is a timed slalom course. It starts with a short "straight", proceeds "through the cones", followed by a 180 degree left turn at speed, then back through the cones and past the timer. We'll see if we can rustle up some prizes for this station.
STATION #3 - Is a "0 to 60" with the driver doing a "threshold" brake after reaching 60 mph. DC Performance's Lyle Larson spent years as a professional drag racer and went as fast 6.32 at 220.51-mph in an alcohol car. Lyle will provide instruction at this station. We'll have a drag racers "tree" so that we can learn how a tree works and test our reaction times.
STATION #4 - Is a "skid pad" (just like you read about in the magazines) where the driver does a left circle around a set of cones (as fast as they can until they lose traction) and on the next round they do a right circle. Ray McIntyre, also an ex-professional racer, has offered to help here.
We plan to have a leader at each station. We will also need a "helper" at each station to pick up/reset the cones (not that any of you will hit any cones). Please let us know if you can help us with this event. I will likely "ask" my sons to come and help (they will get a chance to drive later as payment). We plan to have a pop up at each station for shade and ask members to bring their own chairs and something to drink - the club will provide drinks for lunch.
Plan to arrive at 9:30AM the event will start at 10:00AM with lunch at about noon and be completed about 3:00 PM. This would give each group of drivers about an hour at each station.
For insurance reasons, we will need to limit participation to club members and their immediate family. All participants must have a valid Driver License and current auto insurance. Helmets are recommended but not required.
This event is being heavily subsidized by the club; cost is only $100 per car. Participants are limited to a total of 50 cars, so sign up early; you won't want to miss this event!

That is awesome Dan.
It will be a great opportunity to learn what to and NOT to do in a safe environment.
Getting "Snake Bit" on the streets has resulted in too many crashed Vipers.
Will we have a drill specifically set up to simulate "Snake Bite" ?
Sounds great Dan, count me in. How about a donut and burnout contest too(smile)?
Thanks,
Ben
Cathy and I will be meeting with the "powers that be" at El Toro shortly.
We'll try to get a list of "do's and don'ts" from them.
As you know, some of our members often push the envelope......as long as we don't wear out our welcome, we'll try and come up with some fun "extra" events.
If this goes well, and I think it will, we many want to do this every year.
Dan
Count me in...I can also demonstrate how to get "Snake Bit" as was evidenced by my 3 spin outs at Buttonwillow <B
Great job Cathy and Dan getting this event setup for the members, it will definitely make us better drivers. <1
Count me and Carol in. I may even let Carol drive. <2 <2
<m >2 <2 <2 <m
Hey Dan,
I was just kidding about the donut and burnout contests. Our tires are too expensive for that.
Let me know if you need help with anything.
Thanks,
Ben
I may have a set of old track tires that I'd be willing to sacrifice at this event.
Maybe someone else will have a set too.
I'm looking forward to it.
Dan

But to your credit.....the track was wet, this is a very fast corner, and you DIDN'T hit the wall !
That spin out was the scary one, the one in Star Mazda was fun >2! Thanks for posting the picture Lance, I had a blast.
Thank you for putting this together; I need to get to know my new Viper. I'll look for any sign-up information, but please count me in.
- Sean
Hey Sean,
Viper Days will be at Willow in mid September.
You should plan on attending this event - it's very worthwhile and fun too.
Dan
Count me in.
Im new here and I could definitely use the training!!
Count me in.

Hey Guys,
Hope you all noticed that we had to change locations. I kinda wanted to go to El Toro, but they wouldn't accept the VCA's national insurance coverage as adequate and CA Speedway will, which saves the club a bunch of dough.
This should be a fun event. There is an NHRA drag event going on that weekend, so there should be some fun cars to see as well.
Hey Lance,
Getting "Snake Bit" on the streets has resulted in too many crashed Vipers.
Will we have a drill specifically set up to simulate "Snake Bite[/font]" ?"
In a word, yes, a couple of them. Typically, our members (who crash) tend to drive a bit too fast around corners and get on the gas a bit too early, especially on cold streets and with cold tires. The rear end then begins to slide and most rookie Viper drivers don't handle this well. Add a bit of moisture or old tires (yes, any tire over over three years old, no matter how much tread it has is getting hard and becoming slippery).
Another typical problem area is dumping the clutch while shifting quickly from 1 to 2 or 2 to 3 at higher rpms. This ofter results in a spin.
Hope to see a bunch of folks at this one.
Dan <2
I think this sounds great!
Still room for 2 more??? >c >d >g
Dang, the smilies are getting good here <
Hey Lance and Dan,
Lifting the throttle abruptly or braking in a corner or turn is another way to get the rear end to swing around. Maybe you can include that somewhere in the clinic but you'll have to be going pretty fast for that one.
Ben
OK Kala - you and Dai are in! <L
Hey Ben,
Yep, I'm planning to introduce a few common errors to the group and these are too of the most common reasons folks crash their cars. They go into a turn too fast, lift quickly and then brake. The car doesn't have a chance and spins. The driver usually doesn't know what they did to make it spin. Then they sell the car and blame it for the crash.
Yeah, you would have to be going pretty fast for that manuever, but you are a very good driver with Kumhos.
I'd bet that most of our club members on old street tires will be able to make the rear ends come around very easily, some will do it without trying.
Dan
>b, even though I have original tires (4 years old). Think I can wear them out by then???
Hope so.
Just be careful doing it!!!
Dan <2
Please add Tom and Shawn to the list....2 spots.
Glad to see Tom and Shawn coming to this event. ^2
I'll get him to join us for Viper days too.
Ok,
The bet is on. I'll bet you one ice cream cone >p (I know, big spender), that you can't get Tom and Shawn to join us for Viper Days! (I'll be glad to pay off on that debt by the way).
Dan
This will be great!
I have put it on my calendar, and there will be no weekend water polo since it will be the high school season then, whew...
I will bring my son to help re-setup cones for the day, he is looking forward to some time in my car.
I think my wife Linda will drive as well.
So could be myself, son and wife, good fun!
Looking forward to it.
Ray McIntyre
Glad you can make this one Ray.
Definitely bring the family if they can make it.
Dan
Sign me up as well. Especially with Professor McIntyre
Hey Bruce,
Nice to hear from you.
Hope Baseball is treating you and yours well.
Be careful out there among the sharks.
I got drafted in the second round my first time out.
Very interesting process.
See you soon,
Dan <2
Thanks Dan. Kurt was just picked 1st Team All American again, and is back in Appleton at the NCAA tournament.
He is slated for rounds 5-8 ... we'll see ... needless to say he (and we) is very excited.
You will have to tell us about the process when he gets back next week. The draft in June 5 & 6.
Thank you Dan. Eddie and Michelle Reinsma will attend. I think we might do Viper days. I will let you know soon.
Eddie
Please add me to the list of attendees. I am looking forward to it!!
Please add a second car / spot for us. Thanks!
Steph & Glenn
Hey Eddie,
Hope you can make Viper Days. You'll have a blast.
Bring Michelle - she'll enjoy it too.
Dan
Please put me down as a paid attendant.
Thanks.
Lawrenzo
>w Please add Dave & Lisa & Paul & Pam >v
I am in.Still waiting to get my membership; sent it in last week. I guess I will pay once I am official. Looking forward to this since it is very close to home. Hope there are more events in the IE.
Count Paul & Pam in! Pam missed out driving at Willow Springs and is gonna drive this one, one way or another!

Hi Yosi,
The first post in this thread has the Car Clinic Registration Form attached or you can use the PayPal link to register. This is the best way to "lock in" your particiation.
Thanks!
Cathy
I would definitely like to attend this event. But here is the issue. I need to renew my membership which is not a problem, only thing is when I called today to do it they tell me that if I renew now its $115, but that is only good for membership until the end of 08. BUT if I renew in Oct. then it is good until the end of 09!
Its the principle of the thing...I do not want to pay for a full year of membership only to have to pay again 3 months later. It is all because the renewal date is the same (every Jan) for everybody. Which I think is silly. Not sure why the renewal date isn't just 12 months from whenever you signed up. Is it that much harder?
Anyway, I digress...so not sure what the best thing to do is? Should I just pay for the event now to lock in a spot and then renew my membership on Oct. 1? That is assuming I can even pay for the event before my renewal...
Aaahhh chicken or the egg?
Anhtuan,

Plan to renew in October, that will be in time for the "member only" events coming up in the last quarter of the year like this one and the Christmas Party.
Yeah, just send us a check and get your spot reserved. See you at the car control clinic.
Dan
DONE! Payment sent via paypal. I just re-used my 07 VCA number. This event sounds like it would be a lot of fun and a safe environment to learn some limits.
Nino and Ruth would like to do some sideways stuff. Please put us on the list as soon as possible before I change my mind about letting Ruth drive.
Nino
OK, FINALLY signed up!!
Darryl (Dianne MAY watch) >u <L
Good morning and we hope you had a great weekend. Cheryl and I paid theourgh Paypal and will be at the Clinic. We can also help out with any assistance you may need. Cheryl would be happy to assist at any station. Let us know if you need us to arrive early to assist withthe setup.
Mike Sinkinson
Hi Mike,
Thanks, we will need some help at this event with several things, so let Cheryl know to wear comfortable shoes.
We'll likely be there as soon as the gates open and will let everyone know (as soon as we do!)
Dan
Dan/Cathy,
Just registered this morning, Diann and I will bring two cars. Thanks for setting this up!!! I owe you guys from Willow so we'll come early or stay late to help you guys with all the set up stuff.
Mike
Guys and Gals,
Dave C, Lance, Cathy and I went out to Fontana yesterday and set up the 4 car control courses yesterday with Bob and Deb Blizzard.
We drove a bit at each station to make sure this set up would work. I was able to drift all the way around the skid pad and most of the figure 8.
If you are in town, you should try to make this event. There's sooo much room at each station this should be a blast to drive and everyone should learn more about how to control their cars.
See you at the track,
Dan <2
Dan,
Angelica and I are looking forward to this event.
Please let me know how we can help.

I was standing over at the dragstrip with the crew, when a woman came over the walkies saying a bunch of Vipers left the dragstrip and were over in a parking lot setting up cones and
driving figure 8's... She wanted someone over there fast <o
It was hysterical

I don't understand why they would be upset....we kept it under 90 mph and never even came close to the cones !!!!
Lance,
I want to hear about another 720 reminiscent of VOI9 >w Nothing less will suffice. Maybe Ms. Kala Spielberg will have her camera rolling >u
We are all looking forward to this event. For those of you who may be nervous or on the fence about this event, don't be. This will be a really and give you skills to make you a better and safer driver.
Hi Cathy & Dan, Carol can help with anything you need help with. This will be a fun event. Steven >r
Hey Everyone,
Make sure you bring a small cooler with ice and water/drinks for you and your passenger.
Bring sunscreen, chair or towel to sit on for lunch.
I'd also bring a small washcloth for your hands, face, etc. as it was a bit dusty out there.
See ya out there on Sat !
>u
Thanks for the tips Lance.
To All,
There is a small chance of showers on Saturday as of today, 30% or so, which makes them unlikely. At least it's supposed to cool off. In any event, we'll run rain or shine as it's a blast run in the wet, really easy to slide the cars. We'll have some E-Z ups for shelter and a couple of trailers too if necessary.
Also, we have asked management at Fontana to clean the parking lot before our event and they have agreed to do so. It was a bit dusty last time we were there, which made for very easy sliding of the car but also created a little bit of unexpected dust.
Everyone please remember to check your tires (add air as necessary), check your fluids and make sure you don't come with an empty gas tank. Gas is available across the street from the Speedway.
See you at the track,
Dan <2
Hey Dan - Is there a particular tire pressure that we should run at for this type of driving?
I'll be running 30 psi cold in my PS2s.
Should work well for other Michelins.
Hey everybody,
Just wanted to say I'm very excited for my first Southern California Viper club event... I'll be out in the black SRT10 Viper truck... hope you don't mind your uglier, fatter, slower sister hanging around! If you see the guy looking very out of place, feel free to come by and introduce yourself!
See everybody Saturday!
Welcome to the party Brandon !!!!

MACKECHNIE
Dan/Cathy,
great event today, thanks for setting this up. Thanks also to Dave, Rev, Lance, Ray and anyone else I missed for all your hard work too. Hope we can all do this again soon, it was great to see so many of the club members and all the great looking/performing vipers. Mike
On October 4, the SoCal Viper Club put on a Car Control Clinic for it's VCA members out at California Speedway.
There were 4 driving stations set up, each one designed to give the driver firsthand experience of the
Viper's handling characteristics in a safe and controlled environment.
Station 1: Zero to Sixty and Threshold Braking.
We were coached on how to properly stage and launch our Vipers by DC Performance's Lyle Larson,
who is/was a 6 second pro drag racer . Once up to speed, we forced the cars into full ABS mode
to see how good our cars really are at stopping.
Station 2: Skid Pad
With an instructor in the passenger seat, we were coached around the skid pad. With the steering wheel held in essentially one position, creating a perfect circle around the cones, we were able to experience a few key handling characteristics.
By giving the car more throttle, the car would "push" through the turn thus creating a larger circle around the cones.
Lifting off the throttle slightly would settle the balance of the car and the circle around the cones would again tighten up.
If you lift off the throttle abruptly, the weight transfer would move forward and the rear of the car would want to rotate out and around the car.
By easing into the throttle as the back end starts to step out, the weight transfer moves back and the rear wheels gain traction and gain control of the car.
Station 3: Figure 8
The figure 8 took what we learned on the skid pad one step forward. The instructor had us set the steering wheel around the top of the 8 and control the arc around it with throttle input. As we approached the turn in point to cross over, lifting slightly from the throttle would cause the car to rotate into the corner more. Once the car was pointed in the right direction, we could accelerate through the center of the 8 and once again slightly lift and turn in the opposite direction to create the arc around the bottom of the 8.
Station 4: Timed Slalom Course
Armed with the skills learned from the first 3 stations, the timed slalom was set up to put us to the test.
In order to get a good time, you had to launch at the right rpm and put the power to the ground without spinning the tires and losing time. Winding your way around the sharp turns, loop and sweeper without getting too wide or sliding was the key to a quick time. Carry too much speed at the end and fail to threshold brake correctly and you would miss the pit box.

Great pics Lance.
OK, so now that we've done CCC #1, I've had requests for CCC #2 and an advanced Car Control Clinic.
We can set up CCC #2 for next year, perhaps in the spring if there is enough interest. Cost should be similar.
If we can put together an advanced Car Control Clinic at Willow Springs or Buttonwillow with Bob Blizzard and his instructors (in conjunction with NASA, Grand Prix West or Speed Ventures), how many would be interested in attending?
We would plan to have an instructor for every two attendees, in car communication, do some lead follow and basic on track driving instruction. Attendees could run in beginner, intermediate or advanced sessions based upon their track experience. We could make it a one day or weekend event.
Please let me know how many of you would be interested and we'll start planning this event if we have enough interest.
Dan <2
Thanks to everyone that was involved with Saturdays event. The whole day was fantastic. Steph and I had a blast. Hey! we will be interested in something next spring considering after I got off the skid pad on Saturday and looked at my PS2s on the Venom coupe I realized I now own a set of Track Tires. Steph has already started her christmas list. {Motons, 18" all around , swing oil pan and a racing suit from Nordstroms) I think this is going to be an expensive winter.
Thanks again!
Glenn
A suggestion for CCC2......Get TireRack as an on site sponsor so a certain few won't have to drive home on CORDS !!!! >l
OK,
Lance, or Kobi or Rev can contact Luke at Tire Rack (he's the Viper tire specialist) or Jon B at Parts Rack
Perhaps we can get a tire sponsor for out next CCC?
Let me know how it goes.
Dan
PS Kobi made it home OK. Between Kobi and Rev's driving, I'm surprised they didn't bring a spare set of tires!
On behalf of everyone at DC Performance, I'd like to thank everybody (especially those involved in its organization) for making this event a great success!
On behalf of myself, I'd like to congratulate the Viper community as a whole for being a truly classy, enjoyable, and friendly group of people. This was my first (hopefully of many to come) Viper club events and it was a pleasure to see everyone out there getting a better feel and appreciation for the incredible machines they own. I might have been a little out of place in the Truck, but I suppose there's not much graceful about seeing one of those things going around a Figure 8 <t
Thanks again,
Brandon @ DC Performance
Yes, I did barely make it home going about 55-60mph all the way home in the slow lane on wires..very scary.
Im defintiely going to bring a set of spare back tires for the next event. I'll see what Luke has to offer us.
That was the one of the funnest track events I have been to (because Im new) !! Im really looking forward to ccc#2 and Id be up for a ccc at the track. Special thanks to Dan and Cathy for putting on another successful event. You guys are the best!
Took me forever to post on here! Been pretty slammed with work!
But yes, this was an incredible event! Awesome fun and a great learning experience. A great deal of THANKS to everyone who made this day possible! Especially Dan and Cathy...we are very fortunate to have them!
I will be sure to attend any future car control clinics...please have more of these.
Thanks!
