I know the weather forecast doesn't look great for Sat.... but I was wondering if anyone was planning on showing up??
As long as it does not "Pour Buckets", I plan on being there.
However, if it rains even lightly, I would pass on doing the Mullholland Drive Cruise.
All interested should consult on this forum Friday afternoon as long-term forecast is often inaccurate.
I will be there as long as it is not pouring.
Weather still uncertain. I'd really like to take a run in the black beast but may not want to go that far with a vented hood and rain in the forecast. 8)

Took some time early today to meet with my "Viper Friends" in Malibu, and then went back to my office for longer than planned (a classic case of too much work and not enough fun; oh well...)
Did you sell your car?
If so, will you buy another Viper?
I don't know where all the information has gone to with the original post back in October 06, but I have included a map below for Coogie's Restaurant in the Malibu Shopping Center, Webb Way and PCH, across from the Malibu Fairgrounds area, beach side of PCH. We usually meet at about 8:00 AM and breakfast at 9:00. See you there, plenty of open parking and generally great weather.

Suggestion: there does not seem to be a lot of activity (at least not on the site here) on and about the first Saturday at Chino Airport.
Since the second Saturday conflicts with the HRE Wheels tour, could we consider "rescheduling" the Malibu breakfast to the first Saturday of the month?

March 1st will have the Southern California Mini Maniacs at Coogie's also, so it will be a little tight on that day as they have about 40+ cars show up routinely. Some hot Minis, would make for a great shot, snakes and minis?

It would be fun to begin working with and doing some events - autocross comes to mind - with other car clubs.
I think the Minis would be very competitive with our Vipers in an autocross event. Kinda like David and Goliath - and we know how that turned out!
I'll be at Willow Springs that weekend running with the Pantera / Ferrari Club on the big track, so I'll miss this one.

I'll put my money on the Mini Drivers. I have a JCW Cooper Works with the top and bottom tower strut braces, and these guys and their Minis are pretty competitive and can go around a turn MACH 1. Try 100 MPH + on some of the roads in the Santa Monica Mts. But it would be a fun event. Mini Maniacs, tend to be a broader spectrum of car enthusiast, including all physical types, as you can get a tricked out Mini for 40K. They do ROCK, and the club has about 500 members, some great runs have been enjoyed with the So Cal Mini Maniacs.

I agree, I would put my money on the "Miniacs" for the Autocross, as these little marvels have a phenomenal maneuverability, not to mention that they are more tossable than a Cesar Salad. ;D 8) ;D
My first car, back in Europe, was the original (Austin) Mini Cooper S. :)
Simply amazing what you could do with 10" (diameter, not width as in the front Viper rims) wheels back in those days. 37 years later I still have fond memories of this "great little car". ::)
So for this month coming up, March, maybe it is better that the 2nd Saturday of the month Viper get together in Malibu occurs on the 1st Saturday of the month at Coogie's in Malibu. You will be in the company of about 40+ Mini Coopers, most of them S models with all kinds of mods.
Maybe we should see if someone can mobilize the Baxters to come to this event. Would be nice to see Melanie and Greg, nes't pas? <1

Sorry...but if we are taking votes, I vote for the 2nd Sat as always. I know it conflicts with the HRE tour, but the March 3 conflicts with the Willow Springs event which a lot of guys are attending as well. It would be cool to see all the Mini's and Viper's together, breakfast at Coogies would then become difficult.

Not sure where you are located. A group of us coming from OC are meeting at a restaurant called Spaghettinis near the 405 / Seal Beach off ramp area at about 7:15 AM, leaving for Malibu at 7:30 AM. It should take us about an hour to get to Coogies (breakfast) from there. This is my first trip to Coogies, so I'm followin' Lance.

There's a rash of this lousy driving going on. Three weeks ago, one of my next door neighbors backed in to my son's parked Firebird. Two weeks later, my neighbor on the other side ran into my parked Jeep. Last Sunday Cathy drove over a log at the Meguiars photo shoot and dented the side sill on my white Viper.
ARGH!
A cruise will help you forget about this stuff ..... at least it helps me.

Don't forget that the next "second Saturday" is July 14. We are having a dyno day at DC Performance that day from 9AM to 4PM. It's only $50.00 for three runs and DC is donating the $50.00 to the club, so we're hoping for a good turn out.
DC is also throwing in free coffee and donuts for all you early risers and a free lunch for those of us that come by later!
Perhaps we can do something on Sunday??? The Ojai cruise sounds like fun - we just need Joel to lead us!

The Annual So Cal Picnic is August 4, so August 11 could be a good Saturday for an Ojai or a Malibu run. It could be a bit warm however, so we may want to choose the cooler location for August - not sure which one that would be but likely Malibu.

I have a route that we did witht eh Ford GT guys last month that I can easily reproduce for the club. Problem is finding a good restaurant on the coast to end up at with good parking. Joel... There are at least 8 restaurants here in town, or on the way up the 33, that can handle 20-30 people.. Depending on what you want...
Ojai has some great restaurants... Most of the nicer ones have lunch menus that are reasonable... And the space that could handle a group. Some could offer private rooms or patios if there are enough people...

I just got back from Montecito and it was 72 there ??? Doesn't seem fair...
You could cruise out the 150 around Lake Casitas, rarely much traffic there, comes out above La Conchita... Then down the 101...
Club did that a year or so ago and hit a traffic jam on the 101 for about 2 hrs.
I would suggest breakfast at Coogie's in Malibu, then PCH to 101 to the 150 and up to Los Olivos and the Fess Parker Winery for a wine tasting then back through Solvang and back on the 101 or over night Solvang or SBarbara?

I must admit that it is an awesome machine, and very appropriate for OriginialRoot, as long as her doesn't wear that tight leather stuff! But you White SRT-10 coupe should be able to keep up. Hey Joel,
I have found that 8-inch Eibac springs, 500 lbs front / 800 lbs rear work well on the GTS. These are the spring rates that I run on my GTS and SRTs. It's a compromise as it rides well on the street and on the track. I put Motons on all three and love them. K & W makes some good shocks too though I'm not sure if they are exactly the same size as the Motons, it is likely that they are.
As for ride height, your new springs will settle a bit, so they may start out a bit high. My rule of thumb is if you can fit two fingers up front, three fingers at the rear between the fender lip and the top of the tire, you're good. Any lower and you will rub over a bad bump at speed.
You should also have the car corner weighted and aligned. I have found that an "aggessive street alignment" works best all around. Not too much tire wear but a bit more negative camber than a straight street alignment. There is a good article in our next magazine on Viper alignment / suspension.

PS Rear ends - aka rear diffs don't hold up too well in the Gen III Vipers. The diff in my 06 became noisy at about 800 miles. It got so bad that I put a quaife in at about 2500 miles after waiting for parts that never showed up (8 weeks on national back order!!!). Eddie should switch to a Quaife while he is having this done so that he doesn't have to do it again.

As for the run through Ojai, Pine Mountain or wherever, I think Dan thought it would be better to plan that run in the fall or early winter when the weather was cooler.
I know there a bunch of members that love the DRIVING events and this would be a lot of fun. If you want help planning, coordinating a date or just getting the word out, I'd be more than happy to help.

Russ and Armen lead the pack on a great little run. PCH to Latigo Canyon road. I had a great time <2. Very few bikes and luckily no speed traps !
We got on Kanan Dune back to PCH where the OC guys headed back home and the others continued their run.
Armen's car sounded AWESOME ! I was 5 cars back from him and when he hit the gas.....let me tell you...I could hear the power !

Well it looks like someone will have to drive pam for me this month. I think I threw a rod in the engine today driving up the 101. ^4 My Viper is sitting at Santa Barbara Dodge waiting to get checked out. I am guessing I wont have her back for a month or so. I will keep you all posted. Good news is I hear I might get a rebuilt engine from Arrow. I hear they are coming back stronger than from the factory. ^5 I will be keeping my fingers crossed.

Sorry to hear that. Hope it's not a rod. If it is a rod, it is likely that your car was tracked in a previous life. When you have your engine rebuilt, if it is necessary, make sure you get the upgraded 2008 oiling system when the engine goes back to gether. The 2008 swing arm oil pick up and oil pan will prevent this type of stuff from happening again.

I previously thought that oil starvation happened during hard G track like turns. Driving on the 101 thru Santa Barbara I can't think of a high G turn...

If this engine failure turns out to be a failed rod due to oiling issues, I'm guessing Thom's car may have been tracked in an earlier life.
SRT oiling systems aren't perfect but they work fine on the street. If you track your car and run it hard with sticky tires, you can have oiling issues and related failures.
Viper Specialties has adapted the new 2008 oil pan and pick up for the 03 through 06 Vipers. You can find Daniel on the VCA Forum. This should solve our oiling issues.

I talked to Daniel about the oil pan he makes... He sells 2 different kits.
1.) swing oil 08 oil pan
2.) high performance oil system - includes a lot of other parts, I think high flow water pump and larger alternator were in the package.
I had planned to wait and see if just the pan was enough, or was the extra $1,000 for the HP set a better insurance choice.
At Dyno day, I think we all wondered what had been done to Thom's car, since he smoked us all with higher HP and TQ.
I know about the computer learning your driving style... We used to disconnect the batteries on our Prowlers, let them sit 10 minutes, then hook em up, turn A/C on high and drive em like you stole it... The car always ran a lot better afterwards... I doubt doing that same thing would make a lot more HP on a Viper though... It used to change the shift points on the Prowlers.

I don't know how you intend to use your car, but I'd guess that the 08 pick up and oil pan would be plenty. If you plan to race the car in T1 or a similar SCCA series with slicks, firmer suspension, etc. and hire a professional driver to drive the car, you should go for the whole package. If you plan to drive it mostly on the street with occaisional track use, like Viper Days, TCRA or the Pantera Club events, you should be fine with the 08 oil pan and pick up.
I have comp coupe pick ups and oil pans in both of my SRTs and have found them to be quite adequate for the tracking that I do with them. The 08 pick up and pan should work better than the cc pick up and pan and it's about 1/2 the price. This was not available when I bought the cc set up for my cars. If I could switch now to the 08 for free, I would.

Hey Thom. Sorry to hear that. That's horrible. I hope you get it back soon and the damage isn't bad.
In regards to oil pan issues, I have not had any problems with pressure in my car running at Willow Springs and Spring Mountain with street tires. It always fluctuated between 50-75 psi.. I have not ran it with slicks or race compound tires, which is when you may see a difference since you're pulling higher g's, as Dan noted.

I have to echo Dan. I put the comp oil pan set up on my 2003 about 1.5 years ago. Going through the right hander 7 & 8 at Willow, the oil pressure never drops below just under 80.
When I first went to Willow, if I took that corner particularly hard and fast, the pressure would drop down to 70'ish, but never 50 (or at least that I saw).
I would recommend spending the money to have the oil pan changed out. Dan Cragen does a great job.

I'm just wondering if the other high performance parts in the kit Daniel sells provides better oil coverage & cooling, to protect the motor. Is the question would you rather spend 2k more now, do it right or ?k later on a new engine or Arrow rebuild?
I'm not sure yet, what my future is off road. Only time will tell, if my foot will tolerate a lot of track driving....
One thing is for sure. One of the best days I've ever had in a Viper, or any car for that matter, was on the roval in Vegas <2

Yes, I'd go with the oil pan and pick up. The balance of these parts, while good additions, really should not be necessary for normal "light track" use.

I have yet to make it to a Malibu run. Is it on for 12/8? If so, where do we meet? I think I may need a new battery, it won't hold a charge. But I'd like to go Sat.
The plan is to meet for breakfast at Coogies at 8:00am. We will do a short run afterwards.
We moved the time up one hour this month only, due to the Club Christmas party later that evening.
The weather, however, is not looking good for this weekend. RAIN Fri and Sat. Obviously if its raining, we will cancel and see everyone at Coogies in Jan !!

My son, Mikey, and I had a great time. He had never seen so many Vipers and was very excited. He told me he didn't want to leave.
It was a pleasure meeting more of the members and seeing the others. I hope to get out to more of the events this year.

I thought about it and had an opportunity to do so, but didn't. I talked to the guy a bit while stopped. He was driving a fully restored Yenko Camaro, 427 big block, etc. - beautiful, rare, expensive car. When he said my car didn't sound stock and asked how much HP I had and I answered him, he became more mellow and didn't really show any inclination to "play". He's going to Barrett-Jackson this weekend or so he says.
Besides, I couldn't set a bad example for the group, could I?????

Sir Lance-Viper-Alot! I just realized that I will be in SF this weekend running an orthopaedic trauma reconstruction course. Hence, I won't be there. You call it, Sat or Sunday is your call. I think B ruce Conklin needs to exercis his viper legs in anticipation of hte Dukes Run later this month.

There has been such a lack of enthusiasm and participation for this monthly event, I thought it was dead. I would come but will be in Park City this weekend.
No lack of enthusiasm for the Malibu run....just too many conflicts with other club events.
We had a great turnout, 8 Vipers and a Porsche.
16 of us enjoyed breakfast and Sean Penn was there as well.

Nice to see the snakes winding up a canyon. Haven't done that since the Run in May to Oak Glen and Idyllwild.
I was in Park City at the time and it was 25 degrees and snowing and 17 degrees on Sunday AM in a blizzard.
There was a Carrera GT and a Ferrari leaving PC at 8AM in the snow. Not the best conditions for those wheels on the ground. To bad, it was a great looking Porsche.

Arturo et al. I will contest this, the officer who cited me did not observe the "crossing of the double yellow lines" , I was not speeding nor was I driving recklessly. I will contest this ticket and consult with my CHiP patients!

I would like to join you on Sunday morning, but I need to be in Chino by 1:30pm. What is the time and location for the meeting place to start our run?
We could meet at the usual spot, Starbucks off of Shady Canyon at say at 9:30 AM get your coffee / donut fix, leave about 10AM and cruise for a while.
I have a neat route that I like to run up to Chapman Ave, over to El Toro, through some back roads including Live Oak Canyon, Antonio Parkway over to PCH in Dana Point then north to Lance's place.
Hope the weather cooperates - looks like it will as of now. Rain is forecast for most of next week.
Cathy and I were planning to put some miles on the ACR, so we're up for it though she'll likely want to drive the 06 Coupe.
