Title: ADVANCED CAR CONTROL CLINIC - June 13 & 14
Post by: ViperX on January 08, 2009, 06:04:44 PM
ADVANCED CAR CONTROL CLINIC - AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY INFIELD TRACK, FONTANA

OK, I spoke with Aaron at Speed Ventures and IT'S ON, here's the deal:

Here's our Advanced Car Control Clinic, if we can get the numbers. – see Aaron Bitterman's notes below for more info and to sign up.

Cathy and I will both run, so we already have two drivers.

We need to get to at least 20 cars to make our own run group.  30 would likely be the max on this infield short course.  Beginners must run in the Speed Ventures Beginner Group on Saturday.

The infield track is relatively short and twisty, so you won't get too much speed.  This is the track that the SRT experience is run on.

Bob can help with instruction, but we need to act relatively fast to secure these dates and his instructors.

Members will have to pay their own way (discounted) to Speed Ventures and make the appropriate comments as detailed below.

Members who want instruction will also have to pay their instruction fees.  These can be shared if a couple of drivers want to split the costs.

This should be fun and it's very close for everyone - no overnight stay required.

If we get enough folks to make this happen, the club could set up a dinner for Saturday night.

Please let us know if you're planning to attend.

Hi Dan,

Nice talking with you as usual.  For June 13, 14 we can do the following:

1.Free garages for all Viper Club members who sign up by May 22 at 5pm and who SIGN UP for the garage when they sign up and who write "Viper Club" in the comments box.  We only have 34 spots so they must sign up for the garage or they probably won't get one.

2.Registration for Viper Club members who sign up by May 22, 5pm and who write "Viper Club" in the comments box will get the discounted rate of $420/driver for both days (it was $460 last year).  Single day signups will get the day for $220.  This price includes lunch and bottled water.

3.We will give you a dedicated run group if you reach 20 cars by May 22, 5pm.  You can put as many cars in the group as you like of course.  Beginners will run in our beginner run group on day 1 and may be approved to run in the Viper Club group on day 2, depending.

4.I opened registration for this event so people can start signing up right away: http://www.speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=222

Hope this works out for everyone.  Thanks very much for your consideration.  Talk to you soon.

"Best thing to do is get on Speedventures site and get signed up now."

You are soooo right.  We need to get the numbers so that we can assure our own run group.

Aaron has always been very good in the past about letting you sign up, then billing your card about a week before the event.....no reason not to sign up early.

UPDATE:

Bob Blizzard says he can supply some excellent instructors for this weekend.

Price for your own driving instructor is $400.00 for the weekend.

I've hired private instruction a few times and the normal price is $500.00 for the DAY, so this is a very good deal.

For those that want driving instruction but would like to save a few $$$, I'd suggest you team up with another driver and "share" an instructor for the weekend.  You could alternate with the instructor in your car one session while doing lead / follow the next session provided you are in the same run group.

Please let me know if you want instruction and I'll set it up with Bob.

I just signed up too.

Hope to see a few more names on the sign up list.

Just a reminder, you can sign up now and Speed Ventures won't charge your card until a week or two before the event.  This way you secure your spot.

For those of you that don't feel quite ready for the track but still want to have some driving fun, Speed Ventures is also holding AutoX events in the parking lot on Saturday and Sunday.

Dan,

For this event, do you think I can run my covertable with the stock hoops (roll bars) or would I need to switch them out for the steel ones?  Looking on their web site, it looks like the stock hoops would be fine.

Also, my brother would like to run his 08 Shelby GT500KR with us - is it possble for him to run with our group?

Thanks,
Scott

Hey Scott,

If we can get to 20 + cars, we will get out own run group.

It's OK with me if your brother would like to run with us in our group, if he's like you ..... a nice guy!  >w

Speed Ventures does require that if your brother is a beginner (never been to any race track in his car), he will have to run with the Speed Ventures beginner group for the first day so that he can learn their track rules.  Once he gets up to speed, he can then join our group.

If he begins to like the sport, he'll have to trade the Mustang in (or buy a Viper) or get blown off by his brother! >v

Regards,

Dan

Thanks Dan,

My brother actually is a licensed instructor through the diffrent orginizations and has done a fair amount of racing over time including the Rolex 24 hr, so he should be some good competion for you faster guys.  He's owned 4 Vipers, so maybe after this event we can convert him back after he see's what he's missing.

What about changing out the roll bars on my car - do you think I can keep the factory ones installed?

You can count the two of in for this event.  After BW last weekend ................ I'm hooked!!

Thanks again,
Scott

Hey Scott,

Very cool about your brother.  It will be fun to watch him slide that heavy Mustang around the corners.

Perhaps your brother can work with some of our rookies.

Check with Speed Ventures on the roll bar issue.

You (and everyone) really should have a roll bar in their convertibles for street use.  For track use, I personally wouldn't run without one.  SRT does run this course in Vipers without roll bars (just the factory hoops), so SV may accept these as OK in the beginner run group and in our run group.

FYI, Autoform makes a very nice roll bar for the SRT-10 convertible.  I have one in my black car.

You guys can both go onto the Speed Ventures Website and sign up for this event right now.

I'll let Aaron know that it's OK for your brother to sign up and run in the Viper Group.

Hi Guys,

Subject:  Guests driving their cars at this high performance driving event.

Please feel free to recruit your friends or relatives with track experience or wanting to learn to be a better driver.  We would really like this to be our run group along with a few mature friends.

Please let any guest know that they are welcome – they just need to use good judgment and behave while on the track if they want to drive in our group and our group is limited to 20 cars.  Let them know that this is for FUN, and is not racing.  We will be sharing the track and will have some variation in skill levels between our participants.

There will be some opportunity for spirited driving amongst our group (some of it may involve me) we just need to stay safe.

Please let me know if your guest(s) have track experience.  If not, they will need to run in the beginner group with Speed Ventures on Saturday to learn the track rules and then may run with us on Sunday if they do a good job with SV.

See you at the track,

Dan  <2

Hey Nino,

Glad you are coming.  You have several options.  The first, and easiest, is to use blue painter's tape and make a three digit number.  You can print paper numbers and attach them but they may not stay on.

You can have plastic numbers made, as Cathy does for me or Cathy can order them for you at a nominal fee (not sure what this is but she'll know then just bring some cash to the track).

Title: Re: ADVANCED CAR CONTROL CLINIC - June 13 & 14
Post by: Nino Valmassoi on May 28, 2009, 03:31:49 PM
Dan,

If it's not too much trouble, I'd like to get the numbers from Cathy.  They require numbers on the sides and back, so how about three 1's and six 3's.  Since a number might be chosen, I can make 313, 331or 113.

Thanks, Nino

Hey Nino,

I passed your request on to Cathy and she's making them, so you are good to go.  Just bring a few extra bucks to the track to pay her for them.

Wooden numbers ...... huh ..... might start a trend - maybe Fast Eddie would like a set!

Lance,

Wow!  I like the idea of wood numbers.  I could put the on with some #10 flat head screws.  Using flat heads would cut down on the wind resistance. >4

However, I think Cathy's numbers would offer less wind resistance (thinner than the wood), so I better them.

Dan,  Would like to have somone help me with the lines at Fontana since I've only been there at SRT events.  My preference would be to split with someone for Saturday, rotate 2 sessions each like we did w/Bob @ Willow.  Is the price $200.00 per day or??

If anyone is interested in splitting time, let me know.

Here's the latest from Aaron;

The good news is this weekend will still be fun, the other news is that we didn't get our 20 cars and therefore will have a few other drivers in our group.

Also, if we could get one volunteer to get there early and put cones in front of out garages, we could all "pit" together.  The idea would be to get the "end" of the garages, both sides on one building.

Finally, I'm leaning towards having our entire group go into "low intermediate", except for a couple of newbies per their request.  Please give me your input on this.

Thanks,

Dan
  <2

Hey Dan,

Will someone from the club be able to get there early?  The only way to save garages is to cone them off. I'll do my best given that I'll be arriving in the morning too, but an early arrival would take care of that.  I'll have some cones on hand.

We didn't get enough drivers to have a Viper run group, only 13 on Sat and 8 on Sun.  So, we have to figure out what to do.  In either case, all the Viper Club members will get to be in the same group, we'll just have some others thrown in there too.  I'd like to have a high-intermediate and a low-intermediate group, so I'll let you decide whether the group containing the Viper Club members will be high or low intermediate (Blue or Black).
All first-timers will have to run in our beginner group as we discussed when we set this up a while ago.  Let me know if you want your guys to run in Blue or Black (low or high intermediate).

Everyone should attend the regular drivers meeting.  If you want to have a separate meeting for your members, that's fine of course.

Sounds great on the instructors.  The instructors only need to sign the passenger waiver to ride along.  Their students will have to buy their instructors a session if they want them to drive their cars.

Look forward to hearing back.

Thanks,

Aaron Bitterman

WARNING !!!

There was a news report the other night regarding the 15 freeway north and south, from the 91 up past the 210 freeway.   They are really stepping up the CHP patrols using air and ground and will be exercising zero tolerance for speeding due to the large number of fatalities and injuries that occur on this stretch of freeway.  The state granted them special funding just for extra patrol duty.

Be safe and smart.....plenty of time to go fast on the track (unless you want to follow me).  No need to speed just to get there.

The day went like clockwork with plenty of track time and better still, lots of open track time in the afternoon sessions. Bob's instruction was as always spot-on and a great help to this driver.
I'm looking forward to the next time we can all get together at a track.

Dan/Cathy, Thanks for setting up this event, I had a great time and even the weather cooperated.

Want to say thanks for all the support from the club members, especially Lance who bleed my brakes!  Juan and Eddie for the wheel work, Scott for the numbers.  We prepped the viper in 20 minutes with all the help!!  Additionally, thanks to Dan for some tools and plenty of advise, Bob B for the great instruction, Art for the pictures and I'm sure I've left out a few folks who gave me help and support, thanks to everyone!!!

I'm planning on a couple of upgrades for the next event, first I'm going to pull the cats off so when I backfire I'll shoot some nice flames, secondly I need to find some more HP to hold Ben off.  If he gets a Gen IV I'm toast!!

"Slow" Eddie chose to socialize over terrorizing cars on the track, but made sure to let Lance and Company know that this is the only pass they're going to get all year long  >w

Wow, it was another GREAT event by Cathy and Dan and the club.  I really had a lot of fun on the track and did a few runs in autox too.  Thanks again everyone for being so friendly and Bob for the excellent instructions - he showed me that my lines were WAYYYYYYYYYY off.  Can't wait for Lance's great pictures and thanks Art for emailing me the ones you took.  And even Susanna had a great time too, good thing she didin't drive, otherwsie it wouldn't look too good if she kept passing me.  At least she took some cool videos.

Cathy,
I uploaded the video Susanna took straight to Youtube, the HD video below took only 20 minutes to upload, not too bad.

Hey Art,
Cool pictures with that fancy phone of yours !

Just for the record....I wasn't waving to the camera doing 115 down the front straight.
OK, maybe I was...but my arm was out the window for 3/4's of the track, pointing everyone by anyhow !

I'm driving along on the track and my phone is beeping with all the pictures you were sending me.  I'm suprised you weren't texting me  "Speed it up...the Prius hybrid is about to lap you !"
