ADVANCED CAR CONTROL CLINIC - AUTO CLUB SPEEDWAY INFIELD TRACK, FONTANA

OK, I spoke with Aaron at Speed Ventures and IT'S ON, here's the deal:

Here's our Advanced Car Control Clinic, if we can get the numbers. – see Aaron Bitterman's notes below for more info and to sign up.

Cathy and I will both run, so we already have two drivers.

We need to get to at least 20 cars to make our own run group.  30 would likely be the max on this infield short course.  Beginners must run in the Speed Ventures Beginner Group on Saturday.

The infield track is relatively short and twisty, so you won't get too much speed.  This is the track that the SRT experience is run on.

Bob can help with instruction, but we need to act relatively fast to secure these dates and his instructors.

Members will have to pay their own way (discounted) to Speed Ventures and make the appropriate comments as detailed below.

Members who want instruction will also have to pay their instruction fees.  These can be shared if a couple of drivers want to split the costs.

This should be fun and it's very close for everyone - no overnight stay required.

If we get enough folks to make this happen, the club could set up a dinner for Saturday night.

Please let us know if you're planning to attend.

Subject: RE: June 13 & 14 at ACS

Hi Dan,

Nice talking with you as usual.  For June 13, 14 we can do the following:

1.Free garages for all Viper Club members who sign up by May 22 at 5pm and who SIGN UP for the garage when they sign up and who write "Viper Club" in the comments box.  We only have 34 spots so they must sign up for the garage or they probably won't get one.

2.Registration for Viper Club members who sign up by May 22, 5pm and who write "Viper Club" in the comments box will get the discounted rate of $420/driver for both days (it was $460 last year).  Single day signups will get the day for $220.  This price includes lunch and bottled water.

3.We will give you a dedicated run group if you reach 20 cars by May 22, 5pm.  You can put as many cars in the group as you like of course.  Beginners will run in our beginner run group on day 1 and may be approved to run in the Viper Club group on day 2, depending.

4.I opened registration for this event so people can start signing up right away: http://www.speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=222

Hope this works out for everyone.  Thanks very much for your consideration.  Talk to you soon.

Hey Gang,

Member Jeff Van Pelt has asked us to check out Stack Performance in Anaheim.

I phoned owner Ryan and set up a meet at Cars and Coffee on Saturday morning, January 24.

After C & C, we're off to a short run and breakfast somewhere along the coast and then up to Ryan's shop to check it out.

All are invited on this short meet, breakfast and run up to his shop.

Let us know who's coming please.

Hey Guys and Gals,

Speed Ventures will be running at Willow Springs on Feb 7 & 8.

I'll be running the new ACR for the first time.

There are also some early sign up discounts as follows:

BIG WILLOW - February
We have early-bird pricing for Big Willow of $150 available to the first 50 signups until January 16th at 9pm.  Be sure to sign up soon: http://www.speedventures.com/events/eventdetail.aspx?id=209

Check their website for more info.

This is a very good group to run with.  They offer beginner, intermediate and advanced driving groups along with instruction if you'd like.

This is the group that we'll be running ACS at Fontana with in June for our advanced Car Control Clinic.

This event will be a good "warm up" for Viper Days.

Dan  <2

Hope to see some of you there.

Hi Guys,

Just received notice that Willow Springs will be holding an open test and tune days on the weekend after Christmas, December 27 & 28.  You can run either day or both.  Members pay $150.00 for the day.  I think non-members pay $200.00

I'm planning to run both days, weather permitting.

Call the track for details and more info at: 661-256-6666.

If we get enough club members to sign up, the club will rent a garage.

We could put a dinner together too.

See you at the track,

Dan  <2

Hey Gang,

Viper Days (North American Road Racing Association) returns to California at Buttonwillow Raceway Park with a test and tune day on Friday, Feb 20 and Driving School activities held on Saturday and Sunday, Feb 21 and Feb 22.

This is the only scheduled stop in California for 2009, so don't miss it!

Track side support is provided by Archer Racing.  The are one of the best places to get your Viper properly aligned.  They can also do routine maintenance and repairs at the track if you don't get your oil or other fluids changed in time by one of our local vendors or have an issue at the track.

Call John Archer for more information or a service appointment at:  218-727-4806

Dan and I will be checking in on Thursday.  Dan will be running "test and tune" on Friday.  FYI: The "funnest" way to do this is plan to arrive at the track on Friday...by 3PM would be great, meet up with us, get your car tech'd, etc.  We'll then we'll go back to the hotel, check in, and go to dinner...

If that doesn't work out and you arrive directly at the hotel on Friday evening, that would be OK too, you can check in with NARRA registration, then time permitting, go to dinner with us.  Keep in mind, however, it will be quite hectic when getting your car tech'd on Saturday morning.

The plan...

=21 Arrive on Friday – head home on Sunday evening.

=15 Plan to run/drive all day Saturday & Sunday – you'll get 4 sessions on the track each day with classroom and in-car instruction.  We'll have a garage to hang out in stocked with goodies to munch and friends to share driving stories with.

=22 Wear comfy clothes, but you must drive in a helmet, long pants, a long sleeve shirt (preferably cotton) closed toed shoes, and driving gloves are recommended.

<t FRIDAY: Registration:  If you didn't check in at the track on Friday, you'll register for the event Friday evening at the hotel.

=19  FRIDAY Evening:  Join us for dinner at El Torito, ½ mile from the hotel at 7PM

Default California 2008 Vipers - SRT needs you!
Each year, car manufacturers selling vehicles in California are required to provide CARB with "in use" OBD and emissions data for their year old products. On December 6 and 7, there is a Viper event planned in Fontana, California and we need to take a quick data sample from as many customer 2008 California licensed Vipers as we can get our hands on. The data will be taken via the OBD connection and will take about one minute to collect, it will not be necessary to drive the car. The only requirement is that the cars must have the production catalysts in place and functional (no headers and high flow cats). We will give each owner a $50 fuel gift card for allowing us to take the data. A Chrysler rep, Paul Cormany, will be there wearing a Chrysler shirt so you will be able to find him. Please post here if you can attend and help us out with this important data collection!

Thanks for your help!

Track Events / Advanced Car Control Clinic
October 06, 2008, 12:53:01 PM
Hi Guys and Gals,

The feedback is coming in - thanks.  It seems most of you enjoyed CCC #1.

OK, so now that we've done CCC #1, I've had requests for CCC #2 and an Advanced Car Control Clinic.

We can set up CCC #2 for next year, perhaps in the spring if there is enough interest.  Cost should be similar based upon participation.

If we can put together an advanced Car Control Clinic at Willow Springs or Buttonwillow with Bob Blizzard and his instructors (in conjunction with NASA, Grand Prix West or Speed Ventures), how many would be interested in attending?

We would plan to have an instructor for every two attendees, in car communication, do some lead follow and basic on track driving instruction.  Attendees could run in beginner, intermediate or advanced sessions based upon their track experience.  We could make it a one day or weekend event.  The plan again is to have fun and learn how to better control you car.

Please let me know how many of you would like to attend this type of event and we'll start planning it if we have enough interest.

Upcoming Events of Interest / Just ordered a 2009 ACR
September 04, 2008, 04:26:33 PM
Hey Guys,

Just ordered a 2009 ACR from Ben Keating at Port Lavaca, Texas.  Ben is the dealer principal (owner of the Dodge store among others) advertises with Viper Days and drives too.

During our phone call, he mentioned that he had two, red, black, red drivers stripe 2008 ACRs (magazine cover colors) that would be in his store in the next couple of weeks that are not yet sold.  He also has over 20 Vipers in stock, many are 2008s.  Thought some of you guys might be interested.

Ben is also considering advertising in our local magazine and providing so cal club members a 20% parts discount on prepaid orders (with no tax of course).  I am still working out the details of working with Ben and his team, but again thought you'd like to know.

Ben will handle all Viper sales himself.  His cell phone number is: 281-851-9140.

Call Ben for more info.

Tell him the club sent you.

Regards,

Dan

VIPER DAYS WSIR - September 13th & 14th

Hey Gang,

Viper Days, aka the Performance Driving School is returning to CA - This time they'll be at Willow Springs (near Lancaster)

We'll have the LeGrand garage for our group with drinks and snacks. Bring your favorite goody if you can, if not, just come and enjoy.

~ There's a reception on Friday night.

~ Time trials / driving instruction and races where you can watch the comp coupes run (for the race group) will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

~ There's a neat dinner on Saturday night with the entire group.

Put this one on your calendar, you won't want to miss it - even if you're just coming to watch!

Here's the info you need to register for the event:

This link is to the Viper Days website where the details of this event will be posted as we near the event:
http://www.viperdays.com/page.htm?id=109

This link will take you to the New Driver's Registration:
http://www.viperdays.com/driver_application.htm

This link will take you to Willow Springs Raceway where you can see the track configuration
http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/trackinformation/maps.asp

It's a good idea to become familiar with the track ahead of the event - I found that remembering all the turns (which is critical by the way) is difficult when you have so many other things to think about.

Track Events / Toyo R888 Track Tires at a discount
August 19, 2008, 03:41:53 PM
Hey Guys,

I wanted to share the following info with the group.  Thanks to a couple of other Viper track guys, I've come to know John Berget of JB Racing Tires.  John buys good, used, shaved race tires, typically Toyos and Dunlops and then re-sells them to folks like us who track our cars occaisionally at a very large discount.

I've been buying track tires from John for over a year now and have been very happy with his products, service and prices.

I am now buying Toyo R888's in sizes 305 x 35 x 18 fronts and 335 x 30 x 18 rears.  Prices vary depending upon the condition of the tires from $400 to $450 for a set of 4 Toyo R888's delivered to your door, ready to mount and run.  This is about 1/3 the price of a new set of PS2s.  Dunlop or other slicks may be a bit more costly.

The Toyo R888 is the newest Toyo DOT approved race tire, i.e. you can drive to the track on these, track the car all weekend and then drive home.  Tread wear rating is 100, so it's stickier than street tires and will take quite a bit more heat.  FYI, the new Michelin PS Cup, which is OE on the new ACR also has a tread wear rating of 100.

SRT guys please note, you will need 18 inch rims to run these tires, 11 x 18 fronts / 13 x 18 rears and an E-brake relocation kit (available from Dave Cawthorne).  RT and GTS guys, you are good to go if you have 18 inch rims.

You can contact John or Mike at 2672-740-0180 or email them at [email protected] for more info.

Hey Guys and Gals,

I've run this track event the last three or four years and enjoyed it every time.  The weather is usually very comfortable this time of year at Willow Springs with cool mornings and warm afternoons.

This event is really a bunch of lapping sessions put together, more laid back and more social than most.

There are usually more cars at this event than most others and they do sell out early.  It's a chance to run with a bunch of other cars and get some passing practice, then hang out between sessions.  They do allow passengers too.

Please let us know if you'd like to attend.  Here are some details and there is a PRINTABLE FORM at the bottom of this post - Look for the Paper Clip...

Hey Guys and Gals,

Check out this link:  http://www.protrackracing.com/

$100 track days are very hard to find.  This should be a fun day for those that can make it.

Temperature is forecasted to be only mid 90's, which is great for this time of year at Willow.

I'd like to test out my new wing and splitter.  We may make this one or the Sunday event.

Not sure yet.

Any interest?

Dan

Hey Guys and Gals,

Just sent the following to NASA:

Hi Ryan,

I wanted to thank you on behalf of the So Cal Viper Club for your help arranging last Sunday's driving event.  This was a bunch of work for both of us, but I think we pulled it off.

I don't think you or your staff could have been any better to work with.  So .....

While at dinner on Sunday night after the track, Manny, Mike and I (along with a Mustang club guy) kicked around the idea of doing a special event with you guys, if possible.

The idea would be to promote, through NASA, an "American Muscle Car Track Shootout".

This would not be a race, per se, but a track day with Vipers, Corvettes, Cobras and Mustangs (or ?) running in their own group with say HPDE 3 or 4 rules.  Hopefully, this would bring some folks out to watch and drive in other HPDE groups.

We thought this might be fun as a promotion for you to drum up some business during slow times.

My primary request would be that this event be held during cooler months and limited to say 30 or so in this run group.  (This is really up to you – just don't want too many in this group).

Manny, myself, Mike Burgoyne, Ron Wasserman, Jonathan Martinez, likely Ben Kawata and some other experienced Viper Drivers would plan to attend.  You probably know some Corvette guys and Mustang guys that would love a shot a driving with us.

Let me know if there is any interest and I'll get this out to our group.

Proposed dates are October 11 & 12.

Regards,

Dan

I'd like to know if there is any interest.

Hey Gang,

Here are the details.

Our track day is on for Sunday, July 13 only if I can get enough folks to commit to this event ASAP.  Price for our group is $1500.00 for the day.  We will need at least 10 cars to get our own run group and 15 would be better.  All of the cars don't all have to be Vipers, we will accept a few of our close friends and families cars, but you must know the disposition of the driver.

This is not a race, it is a high performance driving event.  We plan to have fun and help other Viper owners enjoy their cars at the track in a safe manner.  We will set up our own passing rules and operate much like NASA would with a driver's meeting in the morning before we go out and driver's meetings after each run group.

We will plan to do lead / follow (newer guys can follow the more experienced guys) in small groups during our first session.  If, after you have run the first session, you are not comfortable running with the Vipers, you may go down to HPDE 1 or NASA's beginner group.  The most important aspect of this is that you are comfortable driving your car on the track.

Safety is our primary concern and neither NASA or the Viper Club will have any bad behavior on the track.

Please let me know ASAP if you want to go.  Send a check for $150.00 per car to us made payable to the So Cal Viper Club.

This is a very rare opportunity for track time with your Viper friends.  I urge any of you that are interested to come out and see just how good your Viper really is on a road course.

The plan would be:

Caravan to the track from DC Performance - get the cars tech'd
Go to a local Mexican restaurant for dinner - great food!
Check into the hotel where there is two free drinks at the bar (soda or cocktail)
Meet for breakfast - which is included with the room - then caravan back to the track for the day
If interested, on the way home is a "Dave's Big BBQ" for more great food to fill us up as we head home.

DO IT YOURSELF TECH DAY / INTRO TO VIPER DAYS
Saturday, August 23rd

Hey Guys and Gals,

We will be hosting our first So Cal Viper Club "Do it yourself Tech Day" on August 23, 2008.  This event will be held at our own Lance Kouchi's shop in Wilmington, CA.  Lance has a lift and plenty of space for us to show the group some basic service procedures such as oil changes, brake pad inspections and changes, E-brake relocation installation, jacking points on our cars, jack stand locations on our cars, basic undercarriage inspection, tires, wheels, etc.

Dave Cawthorne, Lance and I will be on hand to help answer common questions you may have about your cars.

We will also plan to spend some time answering your questions and discussing preparing your cars and yourself for our upcoming Viper Days Driving School and Track event to be held September 12, 13, and 14 at Willow Springs.  I'll plan to bring my "track prepped" GTS so that the group can get a look at a street legal (barely), track prepared Viper.

We plan to be on hand at Lance's shop between 9:30 AM and 2:30 PM.

Lance's shop is located at:

Electronic Balancing Co.
660 east D street
Wilmington   CA  90744

Bring your cars and your questions - we'll try our best to have answers.

To All Viper Owners,

Chris Marshall has announced his intentions to run for national president of the VCA.  I strongly support Chris in this endeavor.  This type of information has not been shared with the club members in the past but I thought that you'd like to read his announcement.

Regards,

Dan

*ANNOUNCEMENT OF CANDIDACY FOR NATIONAL PRESIDENT*

To My Fellow VCA Officers:

As one of the founding members of the Kansas City VCA in the summer of
1999 (with only a VIN – the car would be built five months later), I was eager to help fellow owners as they had helped me when we first started researching our dream car – the Dodge Viper.  And what a ride both have
been: Three Vipers, two years as Regional Treasurer, four years as a Regional President (two of which also included the role of Southwest Zone Director at Large), and about six years of those same years serving off and on as a forum moderator and Website Committee member for the National VCA site.  It has been an incredible ride – both in and out of the car.

This brings me to my current role as National Treasurer, where I am in my final year of a two-year term.  I have been blessed in that my predecessor is none other than our current National President, Bob Carroll.
Under his guidance, we have grown the VCA to what I believe is the strongest it has *ever* been financially.  Our ties to Chrysler are as strong as ever and we continue to work towards improving the benefits for all our members – and thereby increasing the membership itself.I have had the pleasure of interfacing directly with the folks on Team Viper, SRT, and other Chrysler personnel since 2001 when then-VCA President Tony Estes first asked me to help funnel member issues back to the manufacturer.

Like all major projects, they take time and dedication.  It is my very firm belief that we need to continue on the path Bob Carroll started as National Treasurer and has successfully carried into the current administration.  I have spoken with numerous other officers at every level of the club and all have suggested that we continue in our current direction, while also adding value to the membership experience and increasing our membership base as a whole.  So with that in mind and after very careful consideration, I humbly submit my candidacy for National VCA President for 2009-2010.  With the future of the very car itself in question, it is *critical* that the VCA presents a strong, unbiased, and unwavering voice to the manufacturer.  The incoming team of National Officers will face a daunting task with an uncertain future.  I would be honored to lead and be a part of that team.

The bottom line is this: You want your officers at every level to demonstrate a passion for the car, the people, and the club itself.  That fire still burns very, very bright with me and I am not alone.  Now is the time we need to unite in support of the club, and thereby the car and the manufacturer.  We need to make the best use of *all* our resources, but most especially our people.  Our regional presidents need to have a bigger presence, especially those that continue to demonstrate their dedication day in and day out.  We also have a wealth of previous regional, zone, and national officers that are rarely heard from these days but would gladly do what they can to protect the legacy of the car and the club.  We have a great club that can be even greater when we recognize and utilize the assets we already have in place.

My vision is very simple: Increase the member benefits to increase the member numbers, bring together former officers to help us represent the club's strengths to the manufacturer, and utilize our regional presidents to bring it all together and truly unite the Viper Club of America.  We need a team of experienced and passionate National Officers to set the tone for the rest of the club.  I had pretty big shoes to fill as National Treasurer and welcome the opportunity to fill them one more time as your National President.  I look forward to providing more  information about me over the next couple months, as well as more details on how I think the next team of officers can be a defining point for the future of the club and possibly even the car itself.

My thanks to all of my fellow officers for their time and dedication to the greatest car club on earth.

     Respectfully submitted,

    Chris Marshall
