Car Control Clinic

Pomona Fairplex
This is always one of our favorite events. This year we will be changing it up and moving it to the Pomona Fairplex to take advantage of a bit of history.
The Pomona Road Race course was home to many great legends like Carroll Shelby, Max Balchowsky, Bob Bondurant, and Richie Ginther from 1956 to 1963.
This is essentially a GIANT parking lot, but the Fairplex has preserved the historic road course outline with paving. We will take advantage of this and use a portion of the old track to set up our Auto-X.
We will also set up a second instructional station similar to what we have done in the past to simulate over and understeer conditions. Bob Blizzard will once again come out to give instruction at this station.
The third station will be similar to the second but will work on a different skill set.

Is the date for sure May 20th or tentative at this point?
I'm good for May 20th. Count me in.
Sunday May 20th is set in stone ! Just got the last of the permits in place this morning and we are finally 100% set.
Perfect! I have a wedding to attend on the 19th, Glad you happened to choose a Sunday. Sign me up!

Sounds like fun, Cathy and I are in. =15 <2 <19 =6
Count me in!
Hi Guys,
Cathy and I will be there, likely Drew too.
Should be fun.
Dan <2
I would really like to attend this event, I have a race that same day and i will have to decide which one to give up to attend the other. Man it's a tuff choice but I'm kinda leaning more toward this event.
How much track time will we get?

Derek,
Track time always depends on attendance.
We have capped attendance at 50 cars for this event in the past which makes for a bunch of track time.
We normally hold our driver's meeting at 9-9:30AM, then start driving shortly thereafter, break for lunch at noon and begin driving again about 1PM. We're normally picking up cones after 3PM. The more help we get with the clean up / pick up, the longer we can drive!
I'm sure Lance will post details soon.
If you can make this one, you should.
See you at the track,
Dan <2
Im in there baby.
Tom and I are in. Can't wait .... nice going on the nostalgia theme!!!!!
yea im going to do my best to make this one!
its all going to depend on my 1st race of the season how i finish i think we are allowed to toss out our worst finish over all for the series and if so ill be there for sure. but i think ill probably end up going there anyways. just bummed because the 2 things i love doing the most happen on the same day and it sucks! lol
anyways ill keep checking back for more info but i'd really like to get on the track and open my car up a bit more than being on the small auto x course we were on the other weekend.

Hey Derek,
You will not be disappointed with this event.
I was really hoping to have all the details posted on this event, but we are waiting on the catering company to come back with food costs before I can finalize everything.
BUT as Dan says:
We will do a short driver's meeting in the morning.
We will have 2 driving stations set up.
Lunch
More driving in the afternoon
Clean up and a possible dinner
We always sell this event out at 50 cars and I have no doubt this will be the case again this year.
We always get a lot of driving time and we will be doing everything we can to ensure that everyone gets the same again this year.
Count me in. >v

is this event only for Vipers? or other people as well?
How soon do i need to let u know im in before its to late?
Good question Derek.
Short answers first:
Yes, Vipers only
You may bring a guest (small additional $ charge)
I should have the registration up in the next day or two. Registration for the event will likely close on May 14th.
Long answers:
Yes, this is a Viper only event AND you must be a current VCA member. You may ask Why? and the reason is this;
In order to put on an event like this, it takes a lot of resources (money). The VCA helps us with obtaining the proper Liability Insurance which is required anytime we "rent" a venue. The Venue itself to rent for a private event is not cheap. We therefore use our Club funds to heavily subsidize events like this. It is such a catch 22 situation. If Viper owners don't pay their dues and become members of the VCA, we don't get any money to put on events like this. If we don't have cool events like this, Viper owners don't want to join. Bottom line is that we want everyone to be able to participate, but being a VCA Member should and does have its benefits.
Thats awesome!
I'd love to see 50 Viper out there running around the track!
Im going to really have to think this over, But i think i may be attending. Will my dad be able to ride in the car also when we are on the track? And what kind of PPE (personal protective equipment) will we be needing for this event?
Only a helmet work? or do i need one of those special suits? and other stuff?
Hey Derek,
I'll recommend a helmet, closed toe shoes and cotton socks, long cotton pants and long sleeve cotton shirt.

Bruce, can you make this event?
Dan <2
Hey Lance,
Are helmets required.
I did not see specifics on driver and/or passanger safety requirements for the event.
I'm planning on bringing my kids.
Alright i think im in for this event!
im gonna bail out on my race that same day to make this event! I would really like to get my car on a track and get to know it better. ive got 5 or 6 races this year and im sure if i bail out on 1 ill be ok as far as the point go.
So count me in!
BTW how fast of speeds do we get up to on this kinda track?
Lance,
Please count me in - this looks like a great time.
Should be freshened up from Spring Mountain.

Hey Demoe,
I'll be talking with Dan about this very shortly.
Helmets will be very likely required. Other stuff will be decided on shortly.
I bought a helmet about 7 years ago. how can I tell if it meets today's standards?
thanks,

I think they just need to be DOT approved.
I'm sure someone will chime in if I'm mistaken.

Hi Jay,
Good question. You will want a "SNELL" rated helmet, which means a car helmet rated for fire safety.
Once in a while one of our club members will show up with a motorcycle helmet, which is not rated and really not suited for high performance auto driving events.
The oldest helmet that most track outfits, and therefore most insurance companies allow as of today is a SNELL 2000, which approximates the date of the design. I have a few older helmets that are SNELL 2000, one that is SNELL 2005 and another one that is SNELL 2010. As you can see from this info, race car helmets are updated about every 5 years.
To find the helmet's rating, simply fold back the padding inside the helmet and you should find a sticker that is placed inside the helmet by the maker. The sticker will include the rating.
Additionally, most folks prefer a "closed face" helmet which has a visor that protects your face and eyes. I prefer an open face helmet and strongly recommend that if you wear an open face helmet, you also wear protective glasses that are shatter resistant. I can't tell you how many times I've had sand, small rocks, rubber chips, etc. bounce off of my driving glasses while running around a race track.
See you at the track,
Dan <2
Thanks Dan, I'll look at it tonight. Mine is closed face, and I really don't like it. But with what you say about debris flying in at you, maybe I'll just be content with closed face.
~Jay
hey Dan,
The safety glasses u are referring to are z87 rated. if u look on the inside part of the glasses the part that goes over ur ear u will see a z87, if u don't that means they are not impact resistant. We are required to use these types of safety glasses at my work thats how i know.

Not to mention not been practicing, I haven't even taken the snake out of its pit in months, I see rust on the rotors, air out of its tires... After so many sleepless nights dealing with the baby, I can't even see straight myself, and then late last year, crashed my Ford GT while going straight >o.... so I'd be happy if I didn't mow half the cones down in my first run and get Drew all upset at me. Hi Ryan,
We are charging $30 for the guest, but we are also assuming that your guest will be having continental breakfast, juice/coffee in the morning and will be eating lunch with us. We will also have soft drinks, water and snacks to munch on and maybe even a cool little gift included. ^2
We will base our food order on the paid attendees.
Hope this makes sense.

If you're a fairly new Viper owner, this is the place you need to be with your car! You can learn so much from one of these car control clinics. You'll finally get to feel it skid in a turn and know what to do if it does that when you're on the road. You'll get to let loose with its power in a safe environment. And you'll have some of the best instructors around helping you learn how to feel those nuances of your Viper.

Those of us who have attended the CCC before, LOVE the experience and enjoy coming back. So come on, make this event fully successful and SIGN UP! You'll find it will be hard to wipe the smiles off your face after each session in your Viper.

Today is your last chance to get signed up for the 2012 Car Control Clinic !
If you do not see your name on the first post of this thread and you are planning on attending, Please email me ASAP.
[email protected]See you all on SUNDAY Morning !
There is no physical address for Gate 15 at the Pomona Fairplex, so it is difficult to Google Map.
If you are coming from the East on the 10 Fwy, your best bet is to exit at Towne Ave (exit 46 ) and make a right onto N Towne, then 1 block up make a left onto E La VErne Ave. This will intersect with Arrow Hwy. Make a left onto Arrow Hwy and Gate 15 will be on your left just past N White Ave.
If you are coming from the West on the 10 Fwy, exit at White Ave (exit 45A) make a left onto White Ave. This will take you north to Arrow Hwy, Make a left onto Arrow and Gate 15 will be on your left.
It looks like the temperature will be in the mid to upper 80's for Sunday.
Is there any shade out there. All I see on the map is a huge parking lot.
Can we bring a canopy or ??
Hey Demoe,
I was hoping that we would have slightly cooler temps, but it looks like it will be warm.
We will have a few pop ups covers, but would suggest bringing anything you may have to get some shade out there.
Guys,
There were a couple of large shades "on wheels" out there that we are hoping will remain.
We'll find out on Saturday.
We should have an "Easy up" at each station but bring shade, a chair and some water if you can.
I'll have my 24' enclosed car trailer, so we will get some shade from it as well.
Accuweather says low of 56, high of 88 on Sunday, so the morning should be cool and nice with the 3 - 4 pm high a bit toasty.
See you at the track,
Dan <2

I just ordered a bell today from c2motorsports down here in San Diego. Ron, the owner, was very helpful showing me the different styles as well as fitting me. I had to have a black one (to match my car of course), so he special ordered one for me. I even convinced him to give me a "loner" to get by this weekend with :)
Jon
Hey Albert,
Glad you can make this one.
Tips, yes. It's best to try them on before buying as fit is important. They need to be very snug, enough so that they don't slip around on your head, but not tight. I prefer open face most of the time along with a good pair of impact resistant driving glasses as it's just more comfortable for me. Open face should be fine for Auto X everywhere and most track events. A closed face provides protection against flying debris better than an open face which shouldn't be a problem at an Auto X.
Get a Snell 2010 rated helmet (car helmet rated for fire) as it will be accepted longer. Bell, Simpson and other name brands are all pretty good. Should be about $300.00 for a good "enthusiasts" helmet, give or take.
You probably don't have much time to do this, but I'd recommend Sube Sports in Huntington Beach, CA.
http://www.subesports.com/products/cat/Helmets
They have a good selection, fair prices and Chad is an ex-racer, so he knows his stuff.
Tell him I sent you.
Dan <2
Do you know if we can do the auto-X with the top down? One mistake that I made when I had the seats re-shaped was that I didn't notice that they raised them enough that I have very little headroom when I'm wearing a helmet.

Had a great time! no wait i had the time of my life! can't tell you guys and gals how long ive been wanting to take my viper out and just spin it around and learn to drift a little. I had to agree with jon the last group we were in did turn into a doughnut/burnout/drift fest! had so much fun sliding around those turns!
BIG thanks to so many people! Lance, all the guys that help get everything set up and going, you guys/gals are a great group a peeps! I really appreciate all that you do. I wish i could have made it out saturday to help a bit but due to having to work i was unable to make it out.
Id really like to give a special thanks to bob and his wife who were in course 1 if i remember right the big circle course. i was in the last group to do it and i ending up being the last one who ran the course trying to get my drifting/ sliding skills down. after i was all done sliding around/drifting. he came up to me and gave me a solid 20 mins or so of 1 on 1 training on how to enter and exit the turns and getting that back end to break loose and control it around a turn. ive still got a lot to learn but his time was very much appreciated! And i learned a great deal just from his 1 on 1 session.
ill get some pics and videos up within the next few days to week. got a very busy week ahead of me and should have been in bed 2 hrs ago lol.
anyways thanks again everyone! Really looking forward to the next event!
Had a blast spinning my wheels all day. Thank you Kouchi family and all that helped organizing this event.
I actually came home with a 2nd place trophy on the stock class Auto-x >1<2
Really enjoyed the doughnut factory too. <1
That was crazy fun. Thank you to everyone that put this on - I don't think we fully realize the amount of work it took to do this event, but it was fantastic!
Lance and Lori,
VERY NICELY DONE! >v
This was outstanding! I don't know who all helped to set up, but I'm really grateful for it! That was a huge undertaking.
All the events seemed very well organized, and there was very little waiting.
I took a little video of myself in the auto-x. I posted it Facebook, but it's public so you should be able to see it. Because of the helmet, you can't see me grinning from ear to ear, but trust me -I was!

Awesome Video Jay - how did you get our track outline to display on the video dynamics?
Thanks Lance/Lori and Dan/Cathy and your families and anyone else who worked to making this happen.
Looking forward to the next event.

It's an iPhone app called video pro by Optrix. I used a suction cup mount from Ram to mount it. If you didn't guess already, this was two different runs, one with the forward facing camera, and the other using the rearward camera.

Thank you all for coming out and making this event, not only successful, but FUN to work on!!!
The Car Control Clinic was the brain child of Dan and Cathy and has gained much attention across the Nation.
We are very fortunate to have the equipment, Bob Blizzard (the best instructor around), a great venue to hold the event and an absolutely INCREDIBLE Membership that supports and participates in each and every event.
The 2012 CCC at Pomona was quite simply put .... AWESOME !
