Is this event heavily scrutinized for tech violations? I have a 03 SRT that makes 800rwhp that I would be interested in taking to the track, however there are no safety additions to the car besides how it came from the factory. What would I be able to run without being illegal as is?

Should be fun.  Hey Lance, are you going to do it?

Hey No Rice,

Hopefully, you have a helmet, a driving suit and shoes.  If not, you will need at least a helmet, cotton pants and a long sleeve cotton shirt.  Driving gloves may also be required.  Come to the local breakfast and tech seminar on Jan 20 at Subie Sports - see event calendar.  I know, it's too late for this drag event but there will be many more driving events coming.  These private events are usually more liberal than the regular NHRA events but I have not run with this group before.  You can usually get away with 11.6 or higher without any issues.    If you go faster, they may want to check your roll bar, six points, fire extenguisher, 1/2 shaft loops, scatter shield, etc.  Welcome to CA.   I have all this stuff on my SRT-10, but I can't make this one - I'll be returning from VCA Prez school on Sunday.   Keep your top up and be conservative in all that you say to your tech guy.  Don't go too fast and you'll have fun.

You really ought to get some safety stuff you know.  You're making too much power not to.  DC will do the roll bars and stuff and Subie will outfit you.

I definitely want to attend. I have a question for any Drag knowledgeable people out there. I currently have a 1996 RT/10 with the original 335/35/17 back wheels. I was told that no one makes 17" drag slicks other then in 315 size. My question is would BFG 315 x 17 Drag Radials (not full Drag slicks to my knowledge) be better then the 335 x 17's that are on there now? Not sure giving up the tire width would be worth it in a semi-drag slick of smaller size? The car does have misc mods including supercharger, suspention, upgraded half shafts, 3.73 gearing, etc. Not sure if that would make a difference in the answer.

Thanks

PS I forgot to mention I have extra front wheels I could mount the 315's on the back if need be (275/40/17s).

GSTG,

If you still have your OE tires, they will be very, very slippery, especially if you are supercharged and 3.73 geared.  Any drag radial, even a size or two narrower will give you much more traction than your old Pilot Sports or new Pilot Sports for that matter.

I just checked tire rack (good place for tire info, www.tirerack.com) and they don't show BFG drag radials in 315 / 17, so not sure if they're available.  Check with BFG.  BFG drag radials are about as sticky as you can get in a radial tire.  They are not as sticky as true "slicks" but they are very good none the less.

In a street type tire, Kumho makes its very sticky Ecsta V-700 in 315 / 17.  I run Kumhos in 335 / 30 / 18 on the back of my SRT-10 on the street when caravaning / cornering with other Vipers.  My SRT-10 makes 925 rwhp so traction is always an issue.  These tires work very well when warm.

Nitto also makes drag radials and I have had good experience with them.  These aren't quite as sticky as the BFG's but last much longer and ride very smoothly on the street.  I use these on my SRT when I'm feeling like chewing up some Ferraris or Porsche GTs.

Good luck,

Dan

I wish we could make this one.  The lastest news is that there may be fewer cars than we thought from the Pontiac Group, as bunch fewer.  More runs for us!

Hey Eric,
It's about time you get out and play!!
I'll see you on Sunday.

As for the F-430....not sure if they'll let him run....but bring your safety gear just in case (helmet, cotton long sleeve shirt, pants, closed toe shoes, etc.) or for sure they won't let you run.

Anyone going from the SFV/LA area want to caravan out to this tomorrow? Post up where you wanna meet at. I am coming from Chatsworth, specifically Devonshire/Mason so I can meet right off the 118 for those near there or somewhere else along the way.

Thanks for putting this one together for us Hugh!
It was a very big event with hundreds of very fast drag cars.
It was also great seeing everyone out today.

1st run = 13.14 @ 113
2nd run = 12.9 @ 112

I wish i had a couple of more cracks at it. On my first run i had a terrible time leaving the line (damn street tires)!!! 2nd run would of been lots better if it wasnt for my miss shift into 3rd!!! Oh well, i had a blast, next time i guess!! ;D ;D ;D

It was my first time at a track. The first run I bogged off the launch with a 2.3 60ft and took it fairly easy the rest of the way and ran 13.1@114mph. The second run I left at 2000rpms with slight wheel hop and a 1.9 60ft and ended with a 11.8@125mph shifting at 4500rpms. I didn't want to get too crazy until I get the car into DC Performance and have them check my tune for down here.

First time at the track and I blew. I only got two runs in. BOTH runs trying to shift into third, I got the JIMMY hands and I went into 5th, pulled it back out and put it into third to finish. NO Rice showed me a different way to shift but I couldnt get another run in before I tried. I still cant complain to much because the runs were decent for shifting into wrong gears.

1st run- 12.4 at 116.6 mph
2nd run- 12.7 at 114.4 mph

Mods are 3:55 gears, comp coupe exhaust and DC tune. The car felt strong in the cold. Thank god the new Viper has a new tranny. In my opinion, all the Vettes and now the Viper I own shift like SHi% Obviously some of its my fault, but I've driven some Porsches that were night and day from our american cars as far as shifting. I'm still pretty happy with the times though. I cant wait to get back out there.

Guys,

If there is sufficient interest - and I think there will be, I'll look into renting a drag track for a day.  It will likely be a Friday because there just isn't anything available or reasonably priced on a weekend, but I think we could pull it off.

We'd need about 30 + Vipers and I think costs would be in the $150 to $200 range per car for the day depending upon the number of cars.  This way, we could get more runs than we'd want.

Perhaps we could get one or more of our vendors to spring for lunch and trackside support.

Please respond to this post and let me know if you're interested.

PS  I got there late and didn't get any runs in! :P

Same here! Definately got hooked yesterday. :D If we have to we could always get another club that will have a similar turnout to go in with us. I would think 60 cars or so would be perfect and would allow about 2 runs an hour or more.

Title: Re: Jan 14th - Drag Event @ California Speedway
Post by: ViperX on January 22, 2007, 04:24:29 PM
After speaking with DC and Hugh, our next drag event will likely be a private one for 10 or 12 cars total, all Vipers and / or Viper Trucks.  The low number of cars is for insurance reasons and the track isn't very flexible on this at this time.  It may improve if we don't crash a bunch of our cars.  For those that don't know, many Vipers have had accidents at the local drag strips due to lousy driving, guys not getting off the gas gently when they get into trouble or over correcting and hitting the walls.

We'll have the track for the day which will mean a bunch of runs for everyone.  Cost is yet to be determined but should be about $250 per car.  Lyle Larson, a new staff member at DC and an x-pro dragster driver, will be available to help us with our drag techniques.

More to follow,

Dan 8)
