General Viper Discussions / VIPER'S FUTURE
October 28, 2008, 04:56:22 PM
The Future of Viper - by Maurice Liang
[This is a excerpt from Sept/Oct 2008 edition of the NorCal Viper Club "Snake Eyes" we thought you'd find interesting.  Most of this information was presented at VOI 10.]

Concept Vipers...

MIRROR, MIRROR ON THE WALL Will there be a Viper after all? That's the big question these days. And with all the doom and gloom in the auto industry and headlines that read, "Viper Line May Be Cut Loose", it's not surprising. But if you think Chrysler is itching to throw in the towel on the Viper, think again.

SHOPPING THE BRAND

To clarify, Chrysler did not go looking for buyers for Viper, buyers came looking for Viper. As Bob Nardelli, Chairman and CEO of Chrysler, LLC explained, "We have been approached by third parties who are interested in exploring future possibilities for Viper. As the Company evaluates strategic options to maximize core operations and leverage its assets, we have agreed to listen to these parties." VCA president Bob Carroll commented, "Let's face it. If someone came and made you an offer on your house, even if you weren't planning on selling it, you'd probably listen to the offer and see what it's worth by shopping it around. Maybe you'd sell it. Maybe you'd keep it and invest more into it." It doesn't take a rocket scientist (or even a brand manager) to recognize the halo effect Viper has had on Dodge and the entire Chrysler Corporation.

PR VALUE
On my shelf are nine binders of magazine covers and articles written about—and because of—the Viper over the past 19 years. Each binder contains approximately 420 pages. Multiply that by 9 binders, and that's 3780 pages of ink. If Chrysler were to purchase ad space at say, a discounted rate of $5000 per page, that would equate to almost $19 million— about $1M per year just in advertising. And it wouldn't be nearly as effective as editorial. And let's face it. Were there any other cars in Chrysler's lineup that would have generated that kind of editorial interest?

CHRYSLER AMBASSADORS
Any Viper owner knows the Viper is a conversation starter. Every time you park the car, you get into a conversation with some total stranger about the Viper. If you've have had a positive experience, you can't help but share with them how much you love the car, and how great Dodge has been with the Viper Owners Invitationals, and encourage them to buy one. How many times have your responded to a friend who asked a question like, "What do you think of the Porsche Cayenne?" with an answer like, "Check out the Jeep Grand Cherokee SRT- 8. It costs half as much and can blow the Cayenne into the weeds!" Congratulations. You're a Dodge/Chrysler Ambassador. If Viper was built by an independent company (e.g. Saleen or Shelby), that brand loyalty would likely evaporate.

ADDITIONAL SALES
When the Viper first came out, Dodge dealers assumed that Viper buyers would buy a Viper and then they'd never see us again. But how many of us have one or more other Chrysler product(s) in our garage because of our Viper experience? Would you have bought that Dodge Ram, Jeep Grand Cherokee, or another Viper if you hadn't owned a Viper? Let's say there are some 20,000 Viper owners out there, and on average, everyone has purchased or influenced the sale of at least three other Chrysler products. That's an additional 60,000 vehicle sales. And that probably happens every year.

POTENTIAL SUITORS
For obvious reasons, Chrysler is not identifying who the potential suitors are. It could be a large company with ample resources to support such a limited production vehicle, and wants an instant halo car, much like Ford did when they bought Jaguar. Or, it could be a smaller company who wants to move into manufacturing a complete car, like a Saleen. However, without the corporate resources to leverage, a small company would incur higher expenses in continuing to develop the Viper. As one Saleen representative said, "We'd love to build the Viper. But if we did, it would have to cost $170,000."

DECISIONS, DECISIONS
All this and more is being factored into the decision process. As Nardelli said, "Viper is an integral part of the Company's heritage. While this is a strategic review, our intent would be to offer strong operational and financial support during any potential transaction, in order to ensure a future for the Viper business and perpetuate the legacy of this great vehicle." Chrysler is including VCA's national officers in the discussions to ensure customer representation. Deborah Meyer, Chief Marketing Officer added, "Believe me, (it's) not an easy decision. Ultimately, we want to do what's best for the brand and what's best for all of you. We appreciate the support of the club, because we (don't) know how all of this will turn out."

A PEEK INTO THE CRYSTAL BALL

The sale of Viper is not imminent, nor even a foregone conclusion. To keep the Viper flame burning, Chrysler's Vice President of Design, offered us a peek into the crystal ball at VOI X by sharing the sketches you see on these pages – proof that Chrysler is still considering the future of Viper. While no details were given, you can see from the sketches that the basic architecture remains the same, i.e. a front engine, rear drive, 2-seater. Viper's DNA dictates a V-10, if at all possible. More exciting, you can see that the designers have captured the heritage of the Viper, while at the same time, taken another step forward in evolution. With the current gas price situation, the horsepower war is likely to come to an end. Even the cross-town boys at GM admit that. Increased performance and efficiency is likely to come from reduced weight with lighter materials. How? Drive Naked.

LOSE WEIGHT. DRIVE NAKED.
If you've ever visited the Viper plant, you've seen the Viper naked – before they install the body. They call it "the world's fastest go-kart". And if you're like me, you always wished you could drive one. Well, my wish came true at VOI. As luck would have it, I was talking with Tom McCarthy, the new "Herb Helbig" when Erich Heuschele, SRT's Vehicle Dynamics Supervisor pulled into the pits with the "Naked Viper". "We were about to send the ACR mule (development car) to the crusher, when we got the idea to see what a Viper would drive like, minus about 500 pounds of body work," explained Tom. "Want to go for a ride?" he asked. "Hell, yes!" I said. As I started to get in, Erich asked, "Want to drive?" "Are you kidding?" I asked. "No, go ahead!" he replied. This was one of those magical moments of being in the right place at the right time! So off we went for a drive around the Chelsea test loop. Minus 500 lbs of body work, the Naked Viper is as Tom had described it, "a lot snappier". Everything just responds quicker. Steering, brakes, acceleration. It reminds me of the Lotus 340R, where Lotus stripped the Elise of bodywork and left a frame with minimal bodywork. "Add lightness," was Lotus Founder Colin Chapman's expression. "We're thinking about what else we can do with Viper," explained Erich. Now this would be an extreme Viper! Let's hope they keep going in this direction. All too soon, we pulled back into the pits. As he drove off, I noticed a decal with Calvin running buck-naked. The caption read, "Life is short. Play naked." Indeed.

VIPER'S NEXT CHAPTER

Whether Chrysler sells the Viper or decides to keep it, the next Chapter in Viper history is about to begin. It promises to be an exciting one. Stay tuned!

Anyone interested in this event from the area that would like to coordinate/attend?

As you guys know, I do the car show in Calabasas on Sundays as well as the Motor4toys Charity Car Shows every December.  This year, the event will be on Dec. 7th, in Warner Center.  We are expecting 5000 cars and hoping to collect 25 000 toys for kids.  I really need your guys help in rounding up the troops.  My thought is to get all the Viper guys and all of Dan's customers to meet at his place in the morning and parade over.  Most of the other car makes do this with their favorite shops.  It ends up being very exciting. Inevitably, people have the cameras in their cars and capture great footage that makes it all over the web.  I hope you guys will entertain the idea as we could really use your help.

Please goto www.motor4toys.com and/or google and youtube motor4toys.

THANKS!

The Formula-D Drift Opener is here in Long Beach - Samuel Hubinette, the 2004 and 2006 Formula Drift champion will sign autographs from 1:30 to 2 p.m. (PDT).

Hübinette will drift the Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10 while his Dodge Challenger is readied (this may be his last time in a Viper!)
Hübinette will steer a Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10, the same model he campaigned to a '06 Formula D title, while team owner Carlson and his NuFormz Racing crew put the finishing touches on the Mopar Dodge Challenger SRT8. Both Hübinette's Viper and Challenger will carry the new Mopar "Liquid Metal" paint scheme. The "Crazy Swede" is eager to hit the drift course on the Streets of Long Beach in his trusted Viper SRT10.

"I'm stoked. I took part in a drift demo at a recent Chrysler LLC LX vehicle car show (Dodge Charger, Magnum and Chrysler 300C). The Mopar Dodge Viper SRT10 handled awesome," said Hübinette. "I told Shaun not to change a thing on the set up. The BFG tires were providing amazing grip. It's best not to rush out the Challenger and I feel real comfortable behind the wheel of the Viper. I want nothing less than to bring back the Formula D title for Mopar and BFGoodrich."

Formula Drift Round One: Streets of Long Beach event details
The Formula Drift Round One: Streets of Long Beach event is scheduled for April 12 in Long Beach, Calif. The media day and practice is April 11. For ticket and event information, visit http://www.formuladrift.com.

p.s. If we weren't at Buttonwillow we'd be there!

Hey Gang,

Viper Days, aka the Performance Driving School is returning to CA - This time they'll be at Willow Springs (near Lancaster)

We'll have the LeGrand garage for our group with drinks and snacks.  Bring your favorite goody if you can, if not, just come and enjoy.

~ There's a reception on Friday night.

~ Time trials / driving instruction and races where you can watch the comp coupes run (for the race group) will be held on Saturday and Sunday.

~ There's a neat dinner on Saturday night with the entire group.

Put this one on your calendar, you won't want to miss it - even if you're just coming to watch!

Here's the info you need to register for the event:

This link is to the Viper Days website where the details of this event will be posted as we near the event:
http://www.viperdays.com/page.htm?id=109

This link will take you to the New Driver's Registration:
http://www.viperdays.com/driver_application.htm

This link will take you to Willow Springs Raceway where you can see the track configuration
http://www.willowspringsraceway.com/trackinformation/maps.asp

It's a good idea to become familiar with the track ahead of the event - I found that remembering all the turns (which is critical by the way) is difficult when you have so many other things to think about.

For more information go to:  www.viperdays.com

See you there.

The SOCAL VIPER CLUB is invited to ~
Hot Summer Nights For Sports Cars in Fallbrook

Several of us in San Diego County have participated in  past years. They close off the streets in OLD donwtown Fallbrook.  There's  music, food vendors.  It's a blast from the past.
Richard

When~
Friday, June 13th from 4:30 pm to 8:00 pm.   Three blocks of the downtown "Village Area" of Fallbrook will be closed to traffic.

What~
Hot Summer Nights is an old fashioned community event in the downtown "Village" area
of Fallbrook.  This event will feature Sports Cars and Exotics.  Other car club invitees will be the Ferrari, Cobra, Maserati and Porsche clubs among others.  Trophies for best Sports Car and Best Club effort will be presented.  Cars are parked diagonally on the street for viewing and judging (not a Concours).

There will be club parking for each car club participating.  If your club will have more than seven cars coming, it is recommended that a parking coordinator be appointed.  Have them contact me to be sure of where and how to park for your club.

Where~
Fallbrook is an out of the way town in North San Diego County.  It is a lovely agrarian area most noted for avocados, that has maintained a Village atmosphere in the downtown area.  Fallbrook is a great venue for displaying cars on the street.  The village/downtown area is like going back in time fifty years ago in CA.  Its all older but beautifully preserved stores and shops in a very relaxed atmosphere.  You can't really see or enjoy this kind of event anywhere else!  Try to get there by 5:00 if you can but you will get parked in fine fashion if you arrive later.  (See the map attached).

Amenities~
Food vendors will be serving food plus several nice restaurants will be open in the downtown area.  In the center of all this is the Village Square where wine, beer and soft drinks can be purchased.  There will be live music by Aunt Kissy's Boy's.  You can hear the music and announcements on the street over radios set up along the display area.  Or, listen on your own car radio (FM 106.3)

Arrangements will have been made for several of the restaurants to accommodate large groups for dinner after the event.  I will gladly coordinate that if you like.

Shops will be open and there will be one or more restaurants offering a special rate for club members who wish to get together for dinner afterwards.

This event is part of several "Hot Summer Nights" events put on by Connections of Fallbrook, a group of local business people who believe in community support.  So, expect to have a good time if you join us as we celebrate the beauty of Sports & Exotic Cars in quaint Fallbrook Village.

VIPER CLUB FAMILY PICNIC

Last year the picnic, and its location, was a huge success and members asked for a repeat of Laguna Niguel Regional Park, so we will.  This is a great venue with ample parking that should work well for our members and their families.  We have reserved a large shaded structure against the hillside adjacent to a large grassy field and sand volleyball court.

Tulsa Rib Company will again cater this event - and their food is great.  There will be a moon bounce for the kids - or the adults if they feel like indulging, there is sand volleyball, we will have a tug-o-war (verts vs coupes?), water balloon toss and raffle some goodies. Bring your footballs and Frisbees.

This is an event for singles, couples or the whole family - bring your kids, grand kids, parents or grandparents - maybe even a sibling or two!

Place:    Laguna Niguel Regional Park
28241 La Paz Rd., Laguna Niguel, CA
            (949) 923-2240 or (949) 923-2243

VOI.10 - BELLE ISLE, MI

The Viper Owners Invitationals have always featured fantastic banquets, exciting memorabilia exhibits and thrilling driving events. But the 10 Viper Owners Invitational August 27-30 in Detroit will have something no other Invitational has had in more than a decade—VIP access to an international world-class racing weekend. When you sign up for VOI.10, you'll also attend the Detroit Grand Prix on Belle Isle where you'll have priority seating for both the Indy Racing League and the American Le Mans Series events (and during the ALMS race, you'll be able to cheer on the #11 Primetime Race Group Dodge Viper Competition Coupe driven by Joel Feinberg and Chris Hall). In addition, there will be an on-site parking corral for those who bring their Vipers and a hospitality tent next to the track where you can relax and refresh between races. And, as a special treat, Viper owners will be able to take their Vipers out on the actual Belle Isle track before the race for some exhilarating parade laps. Those owners who have been around a while may remember VOI.3 in 1996 in Indianapolis, where attendance to the Indy 500 was included in the package. This promises to be even more spectacular as the internationally renown Detroit Grand Prix draws racing fans and media coverage from around the world.

Of course, this Invitational will still have the luxurious accommodations and other fun events that have made them the must-do social events for Viper owners. For more information or to download a registration form, visit www.voi10.com. Or call the VOI.10 hotline at 866-864-2003. Don't be shut out of this once-in-a-lifetime experience. Sign up today.

There will be a shuttle van running between the two hotels, so you're welcome to stay at the MGM Grand Hotel & Casino if you choose.

If you do not have your Viper with you on this event, there will be shuttle buses from both hotels to take you to and from all events.

During the driving events there will be cars available, however, it is first come first served starting with international members first.  I was told that there has never been any complaints and everyone did get drive time.

Please check out the VOI.10 website - it is full of information on this event. For VOI.10 Information and Registration Click HERE

We hope to see you there!

Big Bear Run & Lunch

This run to Big Bear is a lot of fun and worth the trip!  We'll approach the mountain from the east and snake our way up the back way because it makes for a better run with less traffic.  Other vehicles have been known to pull over to let the Vipers pass and even sometimes give us a ThumbsUp  <1 as we go by.

Lunch will be at Boo Bear's Den on their patio – there should be enough space for all of us to sit in the same area!

Our final meeting place before we head up the hill will be the Home Depot parking lot.  There is a 7-Eleven with gas here if needed plus snacks, coffee, etc...

Pick the meeting place that best suits you and your schedule. Let us know where this will be and we won't leave without you.
