Title: CAR CONTROL CLINIC at Auto Club Speedway - Nov 7th
Post by: admin on July 28, 2009, 12:09:25 PM
CAR CONTROL CLINIC at Auto Club Speedway - November 7, 2009
Last year this event sold out - so register early!

THIS EVENT IS DRIZZLE OR SHINE  <Z

Do you ever feel like taking your Viper out into an empty parking lot and doing some donuts just for fun?

Wouldn't you love to go out and burn some rubber and not get a ticket?

Have you ever wanted to take some turns on the street fast enough to slide the car and exceed its limits, without the chance of hitting something or someone?

Would you like to explore your Viper's limits in a safe, legal environment and learn to handle your beast better?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, Viper Club Car Control Clinic is something you just won't want to miss.

The date is November 7th at Auto Club Speedway off Cherry Avenue and the I-10 Freeway in Fontana.  We have rented a large parking lot approximately 1000 x 1200 feet.  The club will provide lunch.
DC Performance will be there to help with the event and offer minor services to all the attendees.
Bob Blizzard, Viper Days' Chief Driving Instructor, and a host of other experienced drivers will be there to provide instruction.

We'll have four stations as follows:

STATION #1 - Is a "small" figure 8 around cones where an instructor rides with you and instructs each driver and offers input / advice on how the car feels, what the car is doing and how to best control it while turning left and right.  I know this will be a long day for our instructors but they should have some fun too.

STATION #2
- Is a timed AutoX type slalom course.  It starts with a short "straight", proceeds "through the cones", followed by a 180 degree left turn at speed, then back through the cones and past      the timer.  We'll see if we can rustle up some prizes for this station.

STATION #3 - Is a "0 to 60" with the driver doing a "threshold" brake after reaching 60 mph.  DC Performance's Lyle Larson spent years as a professional drag racer and went as fast 6.32 at 220.51-mph in an alcohol car.  Lyle will provide instruction at this station.  We'll have a drag racers "tree" so that we can learn how a tree works and test our reaction times.

STATION #4 -  Is a "large" figure 8 around cones where an instructor rides with and instructs each driver and offers input / advice on how the car feels, what the car is doing and how to best control it while turning left and right.

We plan to have a leader at each station.  We will also need a "helper" at each station to pick up/reset the cones (not that any of you will hit any cones).  Please let us know if you can help us with this event.  I will likely "ask" my sons to come and help (they will get a chance to drive later as payment). We plan to have a pop up at each station for shade and ask members to bring their own chairs and something to drink - the club will provide drinks for lunch.

Plan to arrive at 9:30AM the event will start at 10:00AM with lunch at about noon and be completed about 3:00 PM. This would give each group of drivers about an hour at each station.

For insurance reasons, we will need to limit participation to club members and their immediate family.  All participants must have a valid Drivers License and current auto insurance.  Helmets are recommended but not required.

This event is being heavily subsidized by the club; cost is only $100 per car.  Participants are limited to a total of 50 cars, so sign up early; you won't want to miss this event!

Last year was a lot of fun.  We should consider an award for the most worn out tires at the end of the day

From what I remembered Kobi would of won first place and Armen was a close second.

Hey Guys,

Just a reminder.  This event will be here before you know it and it sold out last year.

Please send checks in to Cathy for $100 per car at your earliest convenience as the club has already paid to reserve the parking lot.

Thanks,

Dan  <2

PS  This year I'll put a set of old used tires on my car so I can do what Fast Eddie and Kobi did last year, some fun burn outs!

I'm in!  This is an event not to be missed!  If you're not a track rat, it is the most fun you'll have pushing your car's performance in a very safe environment.

I'm in and paid too !!!

This event last year was not only fun, but really taught me a lot about managing the balance of the car.
We weren't doing hi speed maneuvers, in fact the majority of it was low 2nd gear stuff.  But even at those speeds, there were a whole lot of guys spinning out.

This is HIGHLY recommended to all.     =27

Hate to open this "can of worms" but Kid Viper just asked me to ask the group if there would be any interest in renting a water truck and flooding an area of the parking lot creating some extra slippery conditions for our car control clinic.

It would be easy on the tires but could also make for one messy car, the sides of the car anyway.

Let me know if there's enough interest and we'll check it out.

I am going to have to vote NO on the water truck.

This is Car Control Clinic ONE and people are going to have their hands full enough keeping the car from spinning out on a dry track.

Spinning out on a wet track would be even more unpredictable...parking lot filled with people, cars, other tracks plus inexperienced drivers on wet track does not sound good to me.

Wet track driving/handling could and should be its own clinic.

I also do not like the idea of cars running on the wet track then dragging water over to the other tracks.

I am going to have to vote NO on the water truck.

SV,  Thanks for the input.  Now, others, please comment.  I'll try and clarify below.

This is Car Control Clinic ONE and people are going to have their hands full enough keeping the car from spinning out on a dry track.

Actually, this is our second annual Car Control Clinic.

Spinning out on a wet track would be even more unpredictable...parking lot filled with people, cars, other tracks plus inexperienced drivers on wet track does not sound good to me.

The wet area would necessarily be very small and optional.  Depending upon the amount of interest, if any, there would be a small extra cost, say $20 per car.  Speeds would be lower and spinning is good!

Wet track driving/handling could and should be its own clinic.

Interesting idea.

I also do not like the idea of cars running on the wet track then dragging water over to the other tracks.

Driving areas are far enough apart that water at other areas would not be a factor.

More comments please!

Dan

I'm all for having a station with the Water truck, provided Kid Viper details my car after I'm finished  >v

On a serious note, I think it would be beneficial for club members to see how the big 335s in the rear fare in wet conditions, since some Viper owners have not driven their cars in the rain.

Charge is per car and includes one driver and one passenger.

Now, if you're planning to bus people in ..... call us for a quote!  >w

Art,

On having "Kid Viper" detail your car, you'll have to tell me how you'd get him to do it.  I can't even get him to detail his room!

Title: Re: CAR CONTROL CLINIC at Auto Club Speedway - Nov 7th
Post by: NK BREKR on September 15, 2009, 03:40:05 PM
Thanks for clarifying Mr. President.

Kid Viper says that he doesn't detail his room because no one will see it, and therefor a waste of time, so I think you should stream live coverage of his messy pad over the web  >u to shame him into compliance  >w

Let me know if you need help setting up and I will arrive earlier than 9:30.

Regarding the wet area, I'd love to slide around on a wet skid pad area! Didn't it rain last time at the end of the day and we were out there drifting around and doing donuts? I think it was that event but my memory is getting bad.
Anyways, I think we should offer it.

to learn. <m

Hi Glenn,

This would be great for the "lad"...

$100 gets you: 1 car, up to 2 for lunch and you can share driving this one car.  If we aren't booked up and you want to register 2 cars ($100 each)  then you can do that too.

Hope this helps,

Your humble servant.  >n

Glenn,

If you bring one car, it will need to stay within it's run group (or event), so yes, you can share but the driving time will be cut in half.

Now, when it's all over, a few of us may stay a while and play.

To All,

Thanks for the input on the wet skid pad.

At this point the cost to set up a wet skid pad would be beyond our budget, so there won't be any wet skid pad at this event.

We'll try and set up a wet skid pad another time if their is sufficient interest.

Also, participation is running behind last year, so please call any of your friends that are on the fence and ask them to please sign up!

See you at the track,

Dan

In an effort to boost attendance, what if you placed a link to this event on the National VCA forum, since there might be some people who read that forum and not this one.

The only problem is that it needs to be specified that it is a VCA club member event.

Hey Art,

Go ahead and post it - any help would be appreciated.  You can use the details from our local site.

We've already emailed the entire club, mailed the entire club and it's been included in the magazine.

Lance is correct, all attendees must be VCA club members as the club funds a bunch of this event.

Thanks,

Looks like we are about fifteen cars short to make the fifty.   If money is the problem
then I  personally would pay a little extra to have such a great day with an all Viper group.
The cost is nothing compared to going to the track for a day with an instructor.  Sports cars
are not a cheep hobby. 8)

3M's general purpose adhesive remover does a very good job of cleaning up rubber on side sills or other painted surfaces.

Just wipe the area off with soap and water after you use it.

If it's ok with the members, I would like to propose a fundraiser to help with one of our dear members in need.  It seems that our 1 and only Lance Kouchi needs new brakes most desperately, as he was completely unable to stop in the autocross box all day.  Please send monies to:

 ;D   TOO FUNNY !

So a few comments:
1:  OGO   O> was shakin' his head BIG time, but smiling from ear to ear and laughing at me big time today.
2: I was FLYIN and couldn't get the speed scrubbed fast enough.
3: I went to the woodshop before the CCC this morning and got a Splinter in my right foot.  This prevented me from being able to fully depress the go pedal ( thus greatly diminishing my ability to go any faster than *.36) and was very painful when pressing on the brake ( thus causing me to miss that darn stop box every run ....except for the LAST run  >v
4: Sadly I get the feeling my my NEW nickname will be "PENALTY"   >1
5: What really gets me is:  Kid Viper and I "shortened " the stop box  >l .......and Iceman still managed to get stopped in time ! ! !   >s

Thank You to the entire Everts Family for WORKING all day to give the members another GREAT event !
It was smiles and laughter ALL DAY LONG !

>u  I came home with 785 pictures  ^6 so it may be a day or two before they hit the website.

Dan and Cathy,

Thank you very much for putting on another great event.  I didn't think it could be more fun then last year but it was.  Having Dan and Lyle there to help us out and keep us out of trouble was also a great thing.  You folks are great.

Lance,

Thanks again in advance for all the great photos I know you have taken.  Also for all the support you provide to make these events a success.

Some time this week I'll send you (Cathy and Dan), Lance, and Eddie a video Cheryl made.  I think it will be a great training aid for our next event.  We call it The "ART" of Drag Racing".

All the best . . . Mike & Cheryl  >r

Thank you for a great event and the hard work and planning to pull it off!  Things ran even better than they did last year is seems...and last year ran great!

We had great weather, yummy lunch, and the whole day ran smoothly.  So much so that by 3:30pm we were pretty much done and had time left to "play".

I finally got a chance to practice how to launch the beast with the new found power.  Quite the violent affair.  Love it!

Overall the day was more fun and a barrel of spider monkeys  <K and those critters can be fun!

This is what I call the  "Spin and Grin"  and there was a lot of that going on.
The small 8 was very interesting and challenging to learn how to get around it quickly.

Lyle gave some great direction on how to read the tree and launch the car.  Not nearly as easy as it seemed.

The big 8 was a lot of fun, but at the higher speeds, there was no "catching" it when you surpassed the tires limits.

The Auto-x was non stop fun and laughter !

Panera provided us with a great lunch as always.

Huge thanks to the Everts family, Sarah, Lyle, Dan, Bob, Glenn, Mark, Chris and all of the other folks that helped out with the event.
It was great seeing Marcela and Matt doing great on the big and little figure 8s.

Looking forward to next year! >g

Good thing it wasn't because of that darn lightpole that sprinted into the middle of the drag course !   >w

Justin's screaming as we got sideways on the 0-60 distracted me >w  That's my story and I'm sticking to it.

What Art says is true. My involuntary school-girl shriek apparently can only be heard by dogs, leprechauns and now "Artulius The Great". Again, a thousand apologies for making you lose control and willing your car toward the immovable object! Good times.

What I learned this weekend...sometimes when we're out of control, we're actually in control  - though it appears we're out of control. A prime example is Art!

Lance, as always, great pictures!!!

Art, better to be lucky than good!  What's you annual tire budget??  The folks at the autocross now all have black lung disease!

Lawrenzo,

Don't have all details on the times in front of me, but I recall three of us got into the 33's.  Justin was fastest in his GTS while Ben and I followed in our ACRs only tenths behind.  Drew was next with a 34.1 in my GTS followed by Bruce Li in his ACR.  If Bruce had run a few more laps, he would have likely improved his times as well.  We all ran "R" compound tires (real sticky), so we had an advantage over the remainder of the group.

Most of the group's best times were high 35's or 36's with some times a bit higher.
