Title: WZR & CCC - May 7th, 2011
Post by: Pam on January 22, 2011, 05:05:43 PM
WESTERN ZONE RENDEZVOUS
& CAR CONTROL CLINIC

SATURDAY, MAY 7, 2011
Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA (http://www.autoclubspeedway.com/Visitors-Guide/Getting-Here.aspx)
Deadline to Register
April 28th !

Do you ever feel like taking your Viper out into an empty parking lot and doing some donuts just for fun?

Wouldn't you love to go out and burn some rubber and not get a ticket?

Have you ever wanted to take some turns on the street fast enough to slide the car and exceed its limits, without the chance of hitting something or someone?

Would you like to explore your Viper's limits in a safe, legal environment and learn to handle your beast better?

If you answered yes to any of the above questions, then the WZR combined with a Car Control Clinic is something you just won't want to miss.

There will be three driving stations set up in a large parking lot at Auto Club Speedway in Fontana, CA:

1. An autocross.  The winner will win a trip to Detroit to compete in an autocross against the SRT engineers!  To be eligible for this contest, tires must not have a manufacturer's treadwear rating less than 80.  For example, Pilot Sport Cups = 80 twr, Toyo R888's = 100 twr, PS2s = 220 twr.

2. We'll have a drag racers "tree" so you can learn how a tree works, learn to launch your Viper and test your reaction. Pro Drag Racer Lyle Larson of DC Performance will be teaching you.  You will launch into a short straight with a left then right turn.  This course is designed to induce unbalance in the car to give you a chance to "feel" what it is like when the car is on the edge.

3. Finally, there will be a figure 8 with in-car driving instruction.  Pro Road Racing Coach and Viper Days Chief Driving Instructor Bob Blizzard and his team will be coaching you.  This course is designed to let you feel the car "on the edge" and learn to make corrections.

For insurance reasons, this event is limited to club members and their immediate family.  If you'd like to share your driving experience with your passenger you may take turns, but your passenger must be licensed and at least 16-years old. Helmets are recommended, but not required.

Dinner and awards will be at a local Viper Member's facility where they truly "Build Cool Stuff". They have some neat projects underway that we'll be able to see (a group of astronauts toured the facility just a few weeks back). Feel free to check out their website www.Penwal.com.

For those on the fence...stop thinking about it and signup you will be glad you did.  As the 1st post states this event has sold out the last 2 years and you will gain some great insight on how to handle our Vipers better.

Just a little homage paid to THE STIG. Some say he's a CIA experiment gone wrong, and that his heart ticks like a watch. Others say he naturally faces magnetic north and if you tune your radio to 88.4 FM you can actually hear his thoughts. All I know is...he's called the Stig. – Long Live Top Gear

This means the members with the best times may be invited to Detroit to race autocross against the best drivers from SRT! <m

Not official yet, but this is how it has been done in the past. <K <L <K

I think the more valuable prize is the competition for the Diet Coke Crown. Dan is currently the reigning King of the Diet Coke Challenge but there are plenty of people chomping at the bit for his crown!!! So, the BIG question is...will he hang on to it for the summer?

Stig,

Sooo, now that the gauntlet has been thrown, do I trailer the 1100 hp convertible wearing the old, tired track Hoosier R6's (24+ sessions) or do I bring the ACR and mount up the newer A6's (3 or 4 sessions) on the wider Forgelines?

I do like Diet Coke a lot.....and Ben owes me one now, so I could lose and pay with that one ..... but nope, got to go for it!

I've got a set of A6's on OZ rims just scrubbed in perfectly and I like diet cook too.   <11 But are slicks allowed?  And... I don't want to burn up a fresh set of A6's on the figure 8.   >o

To Hoosier, or Not to Hoosier. That is the question.

I didn't Hoosier last CCC and was glad considering the amount of rubber I left at Fontana. As much as I love my A6s and hate ripping them up, driving on them is SO much fun!

If you run slicks, I'll be forced to...so what do guys thinks? Are we going all-out or keeping it chill?

Not to Hoosier A6!

I think we should just run old R6 tires and have a drifting contest.  Let's save the fresher A6's for competing against Vettes, Porsches, Evos, etc. at El Toro!

The other side of this discussion is that both you (Stig) and Bruce are very likely top contenders for the trip to Detroit.  Running A6's would make you ineligible, so you should both run your 80+ treadwear rated tires, i.e. PS Cups, Toyos, etc.

Our Western Zone Director Greg Baxter, got some clarification for us on the Auto-x qualifier.
Essentially, the fastest Auto-x driver from each of the regional Zone Rendezvous will earn an invitation to travel back to Detroit to compete in an Auto-x challenge against the SRT Engineers.
The top Auto-x driver will have to pay for their own airfare and transportation costs to the Host Hotel.
Once there, you will be treated to a cocktail reception and dinner.  The next day they will also provide you with breakfast and lunch out at the Chelsea Proving Grounds where the Auto-X competition will take place.
Your hotel room for Friday and Saturday night will also be paid for.

My understanding is that this year the new 2011 392 Challenger will be the cars driven on the auto-x.
I believe that the SRT engineers have the winning record, so we really need to get some good drivers back there to do the Owners proud.

Who is it going to be   =5
Title: Re: WZR & CCC - May 7th, 2011
Post by: Mr. Fangs on April 09, 2011, 09:50:39 PM
Word on the street is that the SRT drivers are in serious dis-array.  They have been totally demoralized by the recent events at Chrysler, and are just going through the motions to act interested in high performance vehicles.

Most of the SRT people long for the days of the more simple K-cars, and mini-vans. They may show up for the autocross at the proving grounds, but their hearts are not in it. They are more interested in preserving their padded pensions, than acutally laying down some fast laps at the proving grounds.

This year, most likely all we will need to do is show up and pick up the trophys, as most of the SRT people have gotten pretty old and decrepetit.

You may have noticed that they no longer wish to take up the challenge in the legendary Vipers, but have chosen to drive those sedate sedans with SRT stickers. Realizing that none of those sedate SRT sedans can approach the 200 mph velocity of our Beloved Vipers, but I understand their desire to down grade the challenge(r) vehicles.

I understand the need to show up, and save face, but this year SRT might just as well send us the trophys via UPS in advance, as the results are already in the bag.

I understand some of the former SRT hot shoes have taken up Monster Truck Racing (against lowly Corvettes no less) while some of the founders (Gastange) have switched to Vintage auto racing, and even Bob Lutz had to resort to flying Soviet Jet Fighters to get an edge. We have seen some of the SRT elders racing against Jet Fighters in Phoenix for the so called Viper Vs. Viper events, but we all know that those fighter jocks never really put the throttle to the stops for fear of melting the plastic bodied Vipers in their afterburner wakes.

So step up VCA. Lets put our best drivers forward, and show those SRT weenies what real high performance driving looks like. <m

Should be a good battle at the CCC: Monsieur Jean Gerard vs. Ricky Bobby!

No Worries, I don't share any sexual orientation with the real character.

So who's gonna be my uh... Reeekie uh... Boobie?

I want only that what every other want. I want to retire and tame komodo dragons in Sri Lanka and teach them to perform Hamlet but before I can do that... I must be beaten by a driver who is truly better than me.

If you not yet registered for the WZR/CCC, today is the last day to do so !

Our Club members and Sponsors have been working very hard to put together a really cool event which will cover eveything you can imagine.

Continental breakfast sponsored by Viper Parts of America

Auto-x qualifier sposored by the VCA and Dodge SRT Engineers.  Fastest qualified time will get to compete against the SRT engineers back in Detroit at the Chelsea Proving Grounds

Side by side launch and slalom Sponsored by DC Performance.  Lyle will once again help us learn how to properly get off the line quickly and safely.  This year we are adding an element of the slalom and side x side cars for some non-competitive fun.

Car control/drift station sponsored by Bob Blizzard. Learn first hand what happens when the back end steps out as you are going through a left or right hand turn and how to properly control the car without getting bit.

Lunch will be served at the track and is sponsored by Viper Parts of America

At the end of the day we will caravan over to Penwal where we will get a tour of club member Chris Pennington's facility and also enjoy our dinner / awards banquet.

Again, if you have not yet registered, please do so today as we will be turning in our final head count for food tomorrow.

To All WZR attendees:

PLEASE be sure to check your fluids, oil in particular should be at or slightly above the "full" level.

Also, please check your tires before you get to this driving event.

If you plan to do some smoky burn outs  <2 when the time is right (I might just do a few of these), please remember that most of you will need enough "tires" to be able to drive home .....

See you at the track,

Dan

Good advice !
I'd also suggest that you take as much of the unnecessary "stuff" out of your car as possible.
You won't want this stuff flying around inside your car.

Hey Jean,
How did the Viper X-10 like Spring Mountain?

Viper X10 did well at Spring Mountain (1:52 Video coming soon), although it needs a  little more "chassis work" on the Front and lacks definitely power on that very fast configuration. I was losing at least one full second on every one of the 3 straightaways (over the Gen4 cars).

Still can't beat the ACR-X With their additional power and Michelin Slicks  =16

It would be very interesting to build a Viper X10 on a gen4 powered car. I Hope it'll happen soon...

<m Fantastic time at the CCC.

All the drag racing launches you could want, skid pad throttle steering all over the place, and perhaps the most diabolical slalom course ever devised for Vipers gave everybody the chance to hone their driving skills in a safe environment.

With Lance down for the count with detached retina surgery, and JR Thompson no longer available for backup support the Southern California ViperClub sprang into action to put together a tremendous event.

Past President, (and soon to be Western Region Zone Director) Dan Everts and Cathy reinacted their previous duties, and organized the event. They came out all day Friday, and made sure the course cones were in just the perfect spots to tax the slalom drivers to maximize their driving skills.

Previous Past (previouser?) Greg and Melanie Baxter came in from their new home in Palm Springs to handle the registration, check in and handing out car numbers. Greg showed that he had not lost a step by bringing out his race prepared GTS for the track events.

Dan Cragin (DC Performance) and Professional Drag Racer, Lyle (Lyle Lyle Crockadyle) Larson set up and manned the drag strip, complete with electronic Christmas tree to hone the owners reaction times and clutch/throttle skills. Charlene Palkovic made the most beautiful trophy girl as she staged everyone at the lights.

French speaking Terri Rossi laid down the fastest time of day in his custom X Viper, blowing away everybody else in the timed slalom course.

Lance even enlisted the help of his father to gather up all the (very heavy) cones the end of the events. Was interesting to see just how many of the brand new cones were black marked from their close encounters with Viper tires.

Member Chris Pennington hosted the club members awards dinner at his fantastic fantasy shop, where they build everything from full scale atlas rocket displays to huge Disney creatures.

Beautiful crystal cut glass awards were given to the fastest, and hardest working members while everyone else ate and drank to celebrate the end of a fantastic day.

Thanks to everyone that worked so hard to put together such an enjoyable and educational day of high performance driving.

(Special thanks to driving phenom Mr. Bob Blizzard for showing us the proper way to safely engage skidding situations that may be encountered driving such high performance cars)

Thank You to all who came out for the Western Zone Rendezvous !  This was a full day of fun at Auto Club Speedway's giant back lot followed by a great dinner at Chris Pennington's cool facility, Penwal Industries.

A special Thank you to Dan and Cathy who really took over and worked overtime to convert our Car Control CLinic into the WZR.  As always, every last detail was covered and the event ran smooth and perfect.
We all need to thank Greg/Melanie, Bob/Deb, Dan/Cathy, Drew,Tim, Chris, and Justin for taking the entire Friday off to set up all the cones and make sure that our layout was safe, challenging and fun.   >t

This year our goal was to increase the amount drive time each member got, focus on some specific car control issues.

We were lucky to once again have Chief Driving Instructor, Bob Blizzard, at our event.  Bob, Mark and Chris spent the entire day climbing in and out of cars and worked with each driver on some very neat drills.  We were able to simulate some everyday driving situations and demonstrate what happens when the cars balance is upset  mid-turn.

Many of the drivers got to experience the "snake bite" as the car went from a simple oversteer situation to an abrupt out of control situation.  This can be a very dangerous situation on our streets and often reults in a totalled car and sadly, sometimes passenger injury.

It took over 300 cones to layout this year's Auto-X.  We wanted it to be longer, faster and much more technical.
We also made it easier to see with the use of chalk lines.  The design time was targeted for 1 minute. As everyone cycled thru and learned the course, the times began to drop.  Average times were in the mid 50 seconds.

Congratulations to our two top drivers: Terri Rossi who set a record in his unlimited class car with a 49.702 and Justin Davenport for winning the stock class with a time of 49.967

The last station was once again sponsored by DC Performance with Lyle and Dan offering their help.
Lyle gave each driver tips on how to properly get their car off the line.  This year we added a twist.
We set up side by side lanes and threw in a slalom on the last half.  This gave guys the chance to line up and see who was not only quicker off the line but also more nimble through the cones.

Those are some incredible pictures!  Thanks for posting them.

I also want to thank everyone there for making us feel so welcome.  Even Jennifer, who is not a car person, really enjoyed meeting people.

There were two significant things that happened at this event:

1. I went from liking the Viper to loving the Viper.  I can't believe how easy and fun it is to drive at the limit, not that I'm particularly good at it or anything ;) , but it was great.

2. The Viper community is a great group of people.  By the end of the day I felt like I had some new long-term friends.  I don't often feel that way around car people.

We are really looking forward to the next event.  Hopefully Sedona, and a few in between.

BTW- would you mind if I posted a few pictures on my Facebook page?

Hope to see you all again soon!
~Jay

Welcome to the Club !!
There are quite a few of us on Facebook too, so post away.
I'll also be uploading a bunch of pictures to mine in the coming days.

Come on out to Huntington Beach for the Duke's Brunch on May 22nd.
This event always draws a lot of Vipers and great people.

See you soon and drive safe.

Great Event. Lots of Fun!!!

Congrats to Justin for his Win in Stock Class with his slightly modified GTS. Amazing Skills!!!   >t

Congrats to Samy for running the second fastest time with his completely Stock gen 3 SRT10 on Street Tires (180 treadwear).  >s

Would have been interesting to see Justin and Samy battle on the same type of tires.  <19 =15

Justin and Samy are definitely the Experts in Autocross.

Considering the advantages of my car over Justin's and Samy's and the fact that I was on Hoosiers, the only conclusion that comes to mind it this:

I REALLY REALLY SUCK AT AUTOCROSS!!!!!!!

this was the best one yet.  thanks Lance for putting this on.  the upper course with the instructors was the best.  my car did things with me in it that rattled my brain.  good to know what the viper will do in the flash of a second and how you can be completely out of control before you know it.  let's do this again real soon.. every 6 months would be great.  new tires anyone!!!    Anthony
