SoCal Viper Club Autocross and Drift Clinic
Saturday October 24, 2015This year we're returning to Auto Club Speedway in Fontana for our annual Autocross and Drift Clinic. This has always been a very popular event for new and long time members. The Speedway's huge Parking Lot 6 is an ideal place to take your Viper out and push it to the limit, gaining a full understanding of what happens when you cross the threshold of tire traction while learning to control it.
Thank you to our member Randy Tribolet for setting us up again this year with Naoki Kobayashi, team manager of Megan Racing. They are bringing 3 instructors to teach us the basics of car control through lessons in Drifting. Randy told us "I know some folks are a little reluctant to burn up their street tires. For $50 you can take out Naoki's drift car and smoke 'em all you want. They bring a truck load of tires and expect to go through some. They will try to bring two cars this year. Their cars are set up for drifting and a bit easier to control in a drift. It's a great way to get a feel for it. Last year, many of us rented the car first and then took our Vipers out afterward. I think that's the best way to do it."
Whether your goal is to learn how to full on drift your Viper or simply get the "feel" of having the back end slide out and what to do to catch it, this is the ideal opportunity to come out and learn.

Anyone have more details on the "drift school"? I'm curious to know how the event works, meaning do you get 1 run at it? 2?? 3?? Do you have an instructor with you?? I'm thinking of bringing the wifey and since she doesn't reach the pedals to the snake (fixed seat hehehe) I'm thinking the drift event would be a fun thing for her to do.

Hi Eric
We will have four run groups at the Autocross. You will get three runs in your group so the wait will only be a couple of minutes between your runs. After your group has completed the first round at the Autocross you will go to the Drift school if you have signed up for Drifting. This will give you plenty of time to Drift and get back before the next round of Autocross. Your wife would be in your group so you could go and watch her or if you have also signed up for Drifting.
Each person going to the Drifting class will first attend a short lecture on the basics of Drifting. Afterward you will drive the Drift car with an instructor. When your group has completed a round you can go again by yourself or with an instructor time permitting. This Autocross/Drift cycle will continue all morning. After lunch the Drift area will be open to all paid drifters at any time.
Hope this helps 8)
Thanks for the info! :D

Ben said we have to give you a 5 second handicap because your getting to fast. ;)
Funny, we never did that to Ben all these years!
We won't need any handicaps because I ordered 1st and 2nd place trophies for three classes.
Stock- Stock or minor mods
Modified- Suspension mods and/or tire upgrades
Race- Cars running Slicks or Hoosiers
I hope there is a Cone Killer award too ! ;D
Not that I plan on winning that category, but just in case ::)

Thank you to all who attended yesterday's Autocross and Drift Clinic. The whole day was a complete success! Everyone respected the track and fellow drivers and had a good time in the process. A big thanks to Gary & Melissa for taking care of the timing device and recording the scores and Mike H. for handling the accounting on site. As you can see below times were VERY close... some were so close it came down to that extra donut eaten that morning. Thanks also to all who stayed afterward to help Steph and I pack up... Lance,
thanks for all the photos from the CCC and West Coast!
Thanks to everyone who made it out, new faces as well as old friends. Hope to see everyone again soon at the Members' Holiday Party.
My co-worker Daniel came out to the event with his drone to capture some overhead shots. Now he's hooked on Vipers! Here is a brief teaser for everyone:
https://goo.gl/610ECT (https://goo.gl/610ECT)We noticed several other members had GoPro cameras attached to their cars - what we're hoping for is that those individuals can send us/ upload their footage. That way, Daniel will have more material to edit, and add to final video.
If you know anyone that made recordings, please let them know we're looking, and put them in touch with me. You can PM (private message) me via this forum or email me at
[email protected] and I can get in touch with them directly.
Mike
Looks like lots of fun! Thanks for posting photos as always Lance, I enjoy going through them all the time!

This video needs to be posted on the front of our website, really! What a thrilling fun and exciting video to watch. HUGE thanks for all the efforts and time taken into creating this! The guys over at the other chapters are going to flip watching this. Go team SoCalViper!
Great job on the video !
The footage from above is great. Amazingly clear and stable given how windy it was out there that day.
