Hey,  anybody know of a dodge dealer around LA that can do the frame recall 998/999?  I've been calling dodge dealers, and they all say they can't...

Maddog, I'm in half your boat.  The original owner of my car took it in for the recall and HB Dodge only performed the steering gear crossmember (front) portion of the recall.  They completely skipped the differential support bracket (rear) portion entirely!  I've been putting it off ever since I bought the car in 2007 because I've read the entire process.  If a tech managed to overlook half the recall, umm...  It's crazy, there are tons of horror stories of dealers/techs screwing the recall up, including riveting the triangular gussets backwards, effectively blocking off access to the oil filter!

Not sure how technical you are (I am not, but I can read!), I have the Daimler Chrysler dealer service instructions in .PDF, 112 pages, about 5MB if you want it.  I never got a good feeling from any of the dealers I spoke with.

A few years ago, Dan Cragin said he could do it as he and his team were familiar with the recall, but he could no longer do recall work as an extension of Chrysler (sad for all SoCal members).  I forgot what he quoted me if I chose him to do it, but he encouraged me to check with dealers and to get Dodge to do it for free as the recall period extend indefinitely.  Closest I ever got to getting it done was with Tuttle-Click in Irvine, only because they outsourced it to a fabrication shop that, per the head service manager, had done the recalls successfully in the past.  The head service manager never followed up with me, even after I left several voicemails, so I gave up.  I'm not sure if Dan can do it nowadays, I haven't checked recently.

That said, if you don't track your car, or if your car has low miles w/plans to preserve it, you probably don't want to do anything.

Years ago at a DC Performance dyno day, Dan recommended I not dyno the car due to the lack of the differential frame repair.

Lastly, the 999 recall is for Vipers manufactured from March 1, 1999 through October 2, 2000 (MDH 030111 through MDH 1002XX) only.  Those cars didn't have the differential frame issue.

I will eventually prioritize this, but life keeps getting in the way.  Please let me know if you decide on a solution.

I guess I only need 998 since I have a 97.  My gts is higher mileage and I do plan on tracking it, so I need to get this done.  I am technical and would do it myself, but I think it requires welding, which I don't have the equipment to do.

I'll keep looking and let you know if I make any progress.

Quick Update:

I talked to freddy at Dependable Dodge in Canoga Park.  He said they were able to do it and said they would have no problem with this recall (although I can't imagine a dealer saying they can do it, but wouldn't do a good job).

I'm going to schedule an inspection there in the coming weeks and talk to them more then.

I understand the Service Manager knows Vipers quite well.

After many phone calls with Dependable Dodge assuring me they could do the recall, I dropped my car off there to be told they can't do the recall.  Seems like Dependable Dodge has no idea what they are talking about.  Trying Glendale Dodge next..  They told me they could do it.

What a drag.  You might give a call to Dan Cragin at Speciality Performance Team.  SPT is one of our supporting Sponsors for our Club.  Dan will set you straight.  BTW tell Dan you want the SoCal Viper DELUX job. 8)

Par for the course for most dealerships.  Sorry to hear it Dan.  Let me know how the next place goes.

I'm emailing you the Daimler Chrysler dealer service instructions for the safety recall.  If anyone else needs it, send me a message.  Also, the part numbers for the recall are CAAM9981 (steering reinforcement package) and CAAP9982 (differential reinforcement package).

Does anyone know how long Dodge has to technically stock recall parts for?  I recall a service manager saying "forever" before, but never researched the claim myself.  I should have asked someone at Connor Avenue last summer but was too googly-eyed to think.

On my last resort.  The car is at Glendale Dodge.  We will see what happens.

I also have an inquiry in to dodge to see if they will reimburse the labor if I have to pay someone to do the work.

Glendale dodge seems like they will be doing the work.  They said they were waiting on a liquid, which I would assume to be a liquid penetrant for non destructive evaluation of the welds.  The fact that they have started to pursue this and still think they can do it makes me think they can do it as well.

I also heard back from an SRT specialist.  They said they had worked with Shaver Dodge in Thousand Oaks and they were impressed.  That may be another lead.

Finally got my car back from glendale dodge.  Seemed to come out okay.  I worked with roger and would encourage anyone else to do that as well.

Battery was almost dead and there may have been a new scratch or 2 on the car, but i'm not sure if i just didn't notice it before.  They did say they had found cracks and repaired them.

So i can't really comment on quality of work, but they got it done.
